Entertainment: Hollywood Superstars In Movies Together
Two For The Show
Diana Ross & Billy Dee Williams: 'Lady Sings the Blues'
The former Supremes front woman garnered critical acclaim for her breakthrough acting debut as jazz legend Billie Holiday in 1972's 'Lady Sings the Blues.' The dashing and debonair actor Billy Dee Williams portrayed her longtime lover, Louis McKay, in the Academy Award-nominated film.
Diana Ross & Billy Dee Williams: 'Mahogany'
Diana Ross and Billy Dee reunited their on-screen magic with the 1975 flick 'Mahogany,' a rags-to-riches story about a young Chicago woman who scales the heights of the European fashion world as a model and designer and the local politician who loved her. Considered a blaxploitation flick, 'Mahogany' wasn't the critically acclaimed success that 'Lady Sings The Blues' was, and it was the last film the pair made.
Angela Bassett & Laurence Fishburne: 'What's Love Got to Do With It'
A Yale School of Drama graduate, Bassett became the first African American woman to win a Golden Globe for best actress for her portrayal of iconic singer Tina Turner in the 1993 film 'What's Love Got to Do With It.' It was rumored that Fishburne turned down the role of Turner's abusive husband, Ike, five times until he found out Bassett was cast as the leggy Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. Lucky for Fishburne, he chose wisely. Both he and Bassett doled out performances that earned them Academy Award nominations.
Angela Bassett & Laurence Fishburne: 'Akeelah and the Bee'
In 2006, these two Hollywood heavyweights linked up on the big screen in 'Akeelah and the Bee.' The critically acclaimed film, which followed a young girl's quest to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, marked the fourth project that Bassett and Fishburne have worked on together – starting with the John Singleton-helmed 'Boyz N the Hood' and most recently in the 2006 revival of August Wilson's play 'Fences.'
Denzel Washington & Kimberly Elise: 'John Q'
For Denzel Washington's first feature film following his Academy Award-winning performance in 'Training Day,' he starred in the 2002 drama 'John Q' opposite Kimberly Elise. The film follows a desperate father who holds a hospital hostage in an attempt to get his son on a heart transplant list. It broke the record for highest President's Day weekend debut set by 'The Wedding Singer,' pulling in over $20 million at the box office.
Denzel Washington & Kimberly Elise: 'The Manchurian Candidate'
Washington and Elise's second movie together, 2004's 'The Manchurian Candidate,' was so jam-packed with heavy-hitting actors such as Meryl Streep, Jon Voight and Liev Schreiber that some may not have even remembered that the two were together. Rather than playing a married couple, Elise played Rosie, an FBI agent helping Maj. Ben Marco, played by Washington, during a war investigation. As director, Washington also cast Elise in 2007's 'The Great Debaters,' not as his wife but as fellow Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker's.
Taye Diggs & Sanaa Lathan: 'Best Man'
Possibly one of the hip-hop generation's favorite duos, Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs first played a couple in the 1999 film 'The Best Man,' which featured a notable cast including Nia Long, Terrence Howard and Morris Chestnut. Although the movie was made on $9 million budget, it grossed more than $34 million and was a breakout hit that made Diggs, a Jamaica native who starred as the scandalous best man Harper Stewart, and Lathan two newcomers to watch.
Taye Diggs & Sanaa Lathan: 'Brown Sugar'
In their repeat appearance together, Lathan starred as Sidney, a music magazine head, opposite Taye, who played Dre, a music executive, in the 2002 romantic film 'Brown Sugar.' The story follows two best friends from childhood whose love for hip-hop music and each other grows, while the film's title is an ode to Common's song 'I Used to Love H.E.R.' and the D'Angelo track of the same name.
Gabrielle Union & Morris Chestnut: 'Breaking All the Rules
Gabrielle Union, an Omaha, Neb., native and Neutrogena spokesperson, consistently lights up the screen with her charismatic personality. In 'Breaking All the Rules,' a 2004 film that starred Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, she offered up loads of girl-next-door charm alongside heartthrob Morris Chestnut.
Gabrielle Union & Morris Chestnut: 'The Perfect Holiday'
Three years later, the 36-year-old Union and the 49-year-old Chestnut were reunited in 'Perfect Holiday,' in which Chestnut played an aspiring songwriter turned local mall Santa Clause who falls for Union's character, Nancy, a divorced mother of three. Sadly, the movie was neither a critical nor a commercial success, but that doesn't mean audiences aren't still hopeful for these two to show up on-screen together, again.
