NEW FACE ON THE SURPEME COURT Sotomayor, who grew up in a public housing project in the Bronx, is of Puerto Rican descent. Her father was a manual laborer who did not attend high school and who died when Sotomayor was nine years old, a year after she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. Her mother, a nurse, supported Sotomayor's educational goals. Sotomayor, who is divorced, has no children.[7] If Sotomayor is appointed to the court, she will be the third woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court (after O'Connor and Ginsburg) as well as the court's first justice of Hispanic descent.[8] |

It's gonna be fun watching the Wrong Wing Pubs try to block her nomination and screw up the 2010/2012 Latino and feminist's vote. They're guaranteed toast if they try to rake her over the coals.

I think that she (Judge Sotomayor) is a good choice but I had hoped that Pres. Obama would have chosen a Black woman....if he doesn't I can't see another President doing it. And if by chance he (Pres. Obama) does have another opportunity to nominate another Supreme Court Justice and does choose a Black woman...I don't she will make it past confirmation....another minority woman...OH H*ELL NO!!!! Just my take. |

I agree with you 100%.Other groups can carry their people to the top,but we always have to make room for everyone else.I do understand politics, but we have carried so many people who in the end work against us.I hope and pray that this is a good choice, again i understand politics.Obama will do great things, but we as a people always have to share our dreams with others who have worked against us.

I agree from a political standpoint the pick is brilliant. The Republicans will look like they are beating up on a latina if they go hard line on her. From the standpoint of her education and career she is totally qualified. Now the only issue is some of her political views, which some may find objectionable. But she has been through two Senate confirmations. If she does not get nominated there will definitely be a latino political backlash.

I truly believe that Pres. Obama will have the opportunity to select another Supreme Court nominee while in office (either this term or his next ....hopefully) and if it is not a White conservative male it will be h*ell to get them confirmed. Pres. Obama is trying his best to change the face of government to be more representative of America as whole. It is time for a changing of the old guard but they will fight him tooth and nail. |

When you are in charge of a household you must be careful who you invite in or you might spend all of your time locked in your bedroom. We just got in the big house and we need to make sure WE represent that house, just in case something goes down.I have seen to many people let people ride in their car and end up driving. One must be careful who they pull up.Obama knows what he is doing

The smart Pubs smell the coffee. G.O.P. Weighs Risks of a Supreme Court BattleBy ADAM NAGOURNEYRepublican leaders are considering whether an all-out fight over Judge Sotomayor would alienate Latino voters “If Republicans make a big deal of opposing Sotomayor, we will be hurling ourselves off a cliff,” said Mark McKinnon, a senior adviser to Mr. Bush and a long-time advocate of expanding the party’s appeal. “Death will not be assured. But major injury will be.”

Exactly and the republicans have already lost enough ground on the latino vote, because of the neo-con's stance on the 'border' conflict issue. I saw the light when President Obama in his pre-nomination speech said....President George Hubert Bush picked her to be a judge and President Bill Clinton picked her for a higher level judge the second time. I was like....Oh Wow, Mr President. . . .I see the light. . .lololol |

You are absolutely spot on.. Frankly, I am peeved that not a single black American -- female or male -- made it into Obama's short list of candidates. Surely there were many qualified black Americans. The sole black justice, Clarence Thomas, does not represent the views, hopes, or aspirations of the black community. In fact, his political views, rulings, and votes have been antagonistic toward minorities. Unfortunately, it appears that black Americans are stuck with Clarence Thomas as their voice on the USSC. Shame on you Barack Obama!

I think that she (Judge Sotomayor) is a good choice but I had hoped that Pres. Obama would have chosen a Black woman....if he doesn't I can't see another President doing it. Four years ago NOBODY saw the United States electing a non-white man as President. I wouldn't be so pessimistic about seeing a black woman as a Supreme Court Justice sometime in the next 10 to 20 years. The overall social trend for the last 50 years has been for American society to be MORE inclusive in terms of access to positons of political and judicial power not less. Barack Obama is a shrewd pragmatic individual Sotomayer from a political standpoint is the smartest choice for him to make. It will garner him significant Latino support in 2012 and the Repubs look like bigots if they seriously challenge her nomination. |

You are absolutely spot on.. Frankly, I am peeved that not a single black American -- female or male -- made it into Obama's short list of candidates. Surely there were many qualified black Americans. Barak Obama got about 90% of the black vote. From a political standpoint what does he gain from his first Supreme Court Justice being a black person? Not much, the nomination of a latina is essentially a political two-fer from groups that in the next series of elections represent much large voting blocs that the black vote. On another note Obama is more interesting in creating a more inclusive American society for EVERYBODY not just black people. He has PLENTY of black folks in positions of power in the government. If he loaded up his key government positions with all black folks he would be no better than whites that have exclusively granted other white people access to power. |
