I'd say not as much as the Arab and Pakistani community. I don't wear Hijab (Islamic Female Hair Covering) so on a daily basis I don't have that many problems. Even when I have worn it in public I don't hear any animosity from those around me. The only incident I can speak of was when I applied for a job in 2004. Usually this company only takes 2 weeks to run a background check. I recieved a voice mail a month after the start of my background check saying to the effect of "I just wanted to let you know we're still considering you for the job we're just checking to see if you have any terrorist history." Now some of the other words may not be correct but the word "terrorist" was featured in the voice mail. I have an Arabic name and I have been confused for Sudanese or Morrocan so some may assume that I am Arab. The job I applied for does require a mild form of clearances inorder to do international wire transfers. I was hired by this company and I haven't had any problems since then.

FIRST OF ALL LET ME SAY THIS, I AM A CHRISTIAN. I BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD AND HE TAUGHT US SO MUCH WHEN HE WAS HERE ON EARTH ABOUT HOW TO TREAT ONE ANOTHER AND HOW TO LOVE AND BE HUMBLE AND FORGIVING. WE LIVE IN A WORLD TODAY THAT IS RULES BY POWERS OF DARKNESS IN HIGH PLACES. PEOPLE ARE KILLED AND DESTROYED FOR INSIGNIFICANT REASONS. LET ME ALSO SAY THIS, I WAS MARRIED TO A MUSLIM MAN FOR 10 YEARS. I WOULD NOT CONVERT AND THIS CAUSED A BIG PROBLEM. I AM CHRISTIAN FIRST. HOWEVER, I WILL SAY THAT THE MUSLIM PEOPLE ARE GOOD ROLE MODELS AS FAR AS HOW THEY TREAT FAMILY AND DEAL WITH EACH OTHER RESPECTFULLY. WE COULD LEARN A LOT ABOUT RAISING CHILDREN AND TREATING OUR ELDERS RESPECTFULLY AS THEY DO. THE BOTTOM LINE IS WE ARE ALL GOD'S CHILDREN AND MY MISTAKE WAS NOT BEING A GOOD WIFE TO CONVERT MY HUSBAND TO CHRISTIANITY! GOD FAVORS THOSE WHO SEEK HIM WITH THEIR WOLE HEART AND HAVE A PURE HEART. HE WILL NOT FAIL TO REWARD YOUR DEEPEST HOPES. |

,ITS A BIG GRUDGE THAT I HAVE WITH THIS COUNTRY Do you think if Black Muslims would take a moral stand on issues things might be different. The fact that you even admit you were a little relieved when the towers went down speaks volumns. I am happy that woke up to the horror. But to much of the world muslim silence is deafening, except when they feel insulted by other cultures. How come Black Muslims have never condemmed the nation of islam? It is a race based hate organization, that is clearly removed from true islam. Yet black muslims and noi see to be perfectly happy co existing. Much like many chiristian churches and the kkk of the south. |

I have been an African American sunni Muslim for 30 years, I do wear hijab when I attend Islamic activities, but as Imam Warith Deen Muhammad taught many years ago, a Muslim woman is known to cover her hair, but if she needs to go out shopping ect. she is allowed to be liberal enough to uncover her hair for those periods, How else will a woman who is seeking to make religious changes in her life appreciate the fact that she should be comfortable enough to continue to display her crowning glory when it's her choice? After 9\11 took place, Imam Warith Muhammad also taught that a Muslim woman should not make herself a target by dressing in full hijab and going out in the public alone, because of the misunderstandings , the hatred, and distrust, that some of the sectors of the public were experiencing. I was working as a Healthcare provider, and had to travel to get from client to client, my Supervisor, who was Caucasion, had so much concern for my safety during that time, that she asked me if I needed to take time off work. That assured me, that the human nature the Creator created is still very much alive in all people. |

FIRST OFF I DONT LIKE COMMENTS FROM MEMBERS WITH NO PROFILE ,YOU MITE BE THE PIGS OR SOMEBODY OF THAT NATURE,BUT WHAT EVER.YEAH, WELL WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR A BLACK CHURCH? WE WOKE UP FROM BEIN N---AS AND COONS FOR YEARS EVEN THOUGH SOME US FEEL BACK ASLEEP.I DONT SET MYSELF APART FROM OTHER BLACKS BEIN NON-CHRISTIAN ,THATS WHAT I WAS SAYING.WHAT YOUR SAYING IS THE N.O.I. IS A HATE ORGANIZATION,HA! THATS A GOOD ONE,YOU MITE CATCH ONE OF THEZE HOT HEADED UNCLE TOMS WITH THAT ONE,BUT I TELL YA YOU JUST LOST.ALOT OF WHITES WOULD DISAGREE WITH YOU ON THAT ONE STRAITE UP.I TELL YOU WHAT I NEED YOU TO DO, SHOW ME A SHREAD OF EVIDENCE THAT WHITE COMMUNITIES WHERE TERRORIZED WITH LENCHING,BEATING,DESTROYING THERE INDEPENDENCE(BLACKWALLSTREET GO RESEARCH THAT),BANNING THEM FROM LIVING APART OF THE CURRENT STANDARDS,MADE IT AGAINST THE LAW FOR THEM TO STAND UP STRAITE, MIND YOU I'M ONLY 31 AND I'VE BEEN A VICTIM OF DISCRIMINATION IN THIS DAY IN TIME. SHOW ME WHERE MY PEOPLE DIDNT NEED THE SHOCK VALUE OF A RHETORIC TO SNAP THEM OUT OF BEING IMBEDED IN A THOUGHT OF INFERIORITY.TEACHING THEM TO BE UPRITE AND RIGHTOUS AND TO CARE ABOUT THERE OWN WITH A VERY SERIOUS APPROACH. THE TEXT THE TIMING AND MOST OF THE TEACHINGS ARE PURE.OVER THE YEARS I'VE HEARD PEOPLE MAKE THE SAME COMMENT ALL THE TIME.HANDS DOWN THE ARABS DIDNT TEACH US OR EITHER BRING UP ISLAM AS A WORD IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY.SO THANKS TO THE HONORABLE ELISHA MUHAMMAD WHO LED THE N.O.I. THAT BOUGHT FORTH BROTHER MINISTER MALCOLM X WHO BOUGHT THE KNOWLEDGE OF ORTHODOX ISLAM WHEN HE CAME BACK FROM MECCA TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. ANOTHER THING I CANT FORGET TO SAY .WHY IS IT A PROBLEM WHEN WE AS BLACKS ASTABLISH ISLAM IN OUR CULTURE,WHEN ITS FOUND ALL OVER THE WORLD. THE PRATICE OF WORSHIPPING ALLAH IS FOUND TO BE DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER BUT I LOVE ALL THEM BELIEVERS.I DONT WANT TO BE NO ONES ENEMY BECAUSE MY BELIEF OF RIGHTOUSNESS IS DIFFERENT FROM THERES. 77 SECTS OF ISLAM THE WORLD IS BIG.LEAVE US BLACKMUSLIMS ALONE.EVERYTHING IS FOR A REASON RESERCH. I grew up back in the late 60's, early 70's. It was nothing for NOI to come into the neighborhood with a bus and invite people to their service. They were also out on the street selling their newspapers. The had a presence in the community. Today, you don't see them out anymore. Why is that? I personally don't have anything against Black Muslims. Until I went on a plane and two men of middle eastern descent come. They were wearing headdress and A feeling I thought I would never feel crept up on me. It surprised ME! After 9/11, I went to the locals that lived nearby and spoke with them and asked questions, they took time to answer them and now I have a better understanding of the religion. Sometimes we have deep seeded thoughts that need to be evaluated. No one should be made to pay for something that they were not personally responsible for. If that were the case, there would be no one left on the planet. Let's face it, there are going to be zealots in every religion. I can think of a few, we all know at least one. It may be the aunt that everytime she sees you she feels she has to be the one to quote scriptures to you b/c you weren't in church for the past three Sundays. You wouldn't say ALL Baptists are like that, would you? |

Until I went on a plane and two men of middle eastern descent come. They were wearing headdress and A feeling I thought I would never feel crept up on me. It surprised ME! Itibit, are you sure these men were not Sikhs? Sikhs are often mistaken for middle eastern muslims. They are in fact Asian Indian. Some were attacked after 9-11 by hate crimes. They have been waging their own battle with Islamic extremist in Kashmir.
[edit] Sikh identity in the modern worldDue to the turbans Sikhs wear, people in Western countries have sometimes confused Sikhs with all Middle Eastern men. This has affected Sikhs in times of conflict with elements of the Middle East. For example, during the Iranian hostage crisis when the government of Iran held American hostages in its own country, some people in Western countries misunderstood the Sikh turban as a turban worn by all Middle Eastern men. After the attack on September 11, 2001, some people associated Sikhs with terrorists or members of the Taliban. A few days after the attack, Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh, was gunned down by a person who thought that the victim had ties to Al-Qaeda, concluding that this misconception has lead to an unnecessary increase in hate-crimes against Middle Eastern men. They might have been. The point I was trying to make is that we have to look inside and find out what makes us feel the way we do. Just like we don't like to all be characterized as lazy, no good, chicken eatin' fools. We should try to educate ourselves and make choices from that. I hope in the future, we can become a people of thinking AND feeling, not just feeling. |

Banned by name Not understood by classification
My name is Hafez Haf-Ez By nickname Just so many don't consider me a threat And it's easyer
My issue with 9/11 is still a haunting one because I'm still try'n to recover from that time
I am a stagehand by trade A ex-Marine by choice And a American by birth
During the time of 9/11 I was on the road with Gladys Knight in Canada just finishing up a 4 day tour that took us through NY just days before 9/11 As we passed the border on the way home from a good run. The 9/11 tradigity happened. We missed seeing it unfold on Tv for being on the road back down south after a good short tour. And drive'n the truck back home from the gigs.
As the incident happened we were just getting into Tennissee when we saw the buildings falling again on Tv We rushed home to wait for whatever was gonna happen more in ATL or whatever. And as a stagehand? When things like this happen? Nobody goes out to concerts and whatnot So As the country stood still and waited for the president to speak and let us know what is up?
I got the call from the Union to go to the GWCC to set up a show of some sort. As a black man without a union card live'n in a non union state? I was surprised to be offered work when many times many of us never got a call for work with that Union.
So I rushed to the GWCC to cash in on some work that seldom came from them.
It turned out to be the presidents 9/11 speach "We the People"
And I was given the gig because I had a good classification to offer a safe inviorment for the president to speek at. And I was one of the only guys on the crew allowed to secure the platforms they set the bullet proof podium on for him to speak to the country for the first time since 9/11
So I thought I was not gonna have any issues with finding work after being shown that at least seceret service had no issue with me being a risk to national security
But that was not the case Many of the clients that I worked with for years never called or acted as if they could not even talk to me about why I was not getting any work. And so no matter what I try'd to do to find work? It seemed as if my name kept me from being considered for simple work around town I got one more gig with Gladys before the pressure of the 9/11 scare was too much for her to tour and she went to Vegas and stopped touring. No music preformers were touring anywhere So I could not find work for almost 5 months By that time my landlord was still try'n to be understanding but I had to do something There was a Writ-for possesion on my appartment when I found a gig with a friend of mine who owned Universooul circus and offered me a low end job helping him work on another leg of the circus. As I went out on the orad try'n tomake enough to send back a payment to the landlord as aggreed, the landlord went on funeral leave and left the proporty to a family member (female) who was just out of jail and needed work. While on a break after being told that my friend was not make'n enough money to keep up production, and I was asked to train a group of south africans to replace a few of us to curb his production cost. I was told that someone had taken my possesions out of my apartment downtown at the "Walton House" and stole what they wanted and put the rest out on the streets of ATL at 8am... And everything was gone in less than two hours! So I was about to be homeless and broke because all my mone and possesions was all in my apartment, and all I had was two bags of work gear and a lap top.
I remember many of the people whom I worked for who now because of my name treated me so baddly that I desided not to go back to ATL with no place to go and no work offered due to my Muslim name And how many others acted at the sight of it on paper.
Anytime I fly I am picked out still just because of my name And I'm black too lol
Just the mention of being Muslim or Muslim bassed in todays society is still a issue many of my clients are Jewish and Christian and still have issues once they know of my name Kinda why I have the nick name Ez
But still to this day I'm treated kinda funked up Even by my own people

They'll do ok. Just teach them to be proud of their name and don't let anybody change the pronounciation or give them a nick name because they can't say it right. I remember as a kid people would try to say my name and then say "well did your mom give you a nick name". No, this is my name and this is how you say it.
