Disney is Racist.(191)

I RECIEVED THIS EMAIL FROM A FRIEND OF MINE.

Dear Disney Company,

In December 2005, I made my first visit to Disney World with my family. The
experience was breathtaking. Throughout our journey, the adults were
astonished by how the themes were brought to life. The children were
fascinated and engaged particularly by the Princess', Minnie's House, the
fake snow that fell at night, the parade, meeting the characters and asking
questions as well as taking pictures with the characters. Above all, the
girls were intrigued by the Princess' mini shows. However, my daughter had
a question. She said, "How come there's no Princess here like me?" I asked,
"What do you mean?" She replied, "You know, a Princess like "That's So
Raven or Penny Proud". I responded by saying, "Unfortunately, Disney has
not created fairytales for children like you. In other words, there are no
Princess' of African American descent."

As the evening came to an end, I began to ponder on her question. I thought
to myself...well, why aren't there any African American Princesses in such
a place where the motto is "We Make All Dreams Come True". I decided to
email your company to ask why. A few weeks later, I received a surprising
call. The woman I spoke to reassured me that my question and concern was
taken seriously and would be looked into further.

During this conversation, I asked why there aren't any African American
Princesses. The woman stated because there aren't any African American
fairy tales. She said, "Well we have Pocahontas who represents Native
America, Mulan who represents the Chinese, Jasmine who represents the
descendants of the Middle East and the African Americans have Lion King out
of Africa". That reply left me with the thought that she just compared
African Americans to wild animals. After that statement, I just laughed and
respectfully ended the conversation. One thing I realized was that I can't
blame her for her response. Disney has not created an African American
fairytale.

As an educator/parent, we all know that through life experiences what we
can touch, see, feel, taste, and hear leaves a lasting impression. Disney,
you hold the power to make life experiences become a reality to a melting
pot world, which includes African Americans. Disney's motto is "We Make All
Dreams Come True". Well Disney, my child and other children like her have a
dream and through their Disney experience, they are depending on you to
make it come true.

Thank you,

I HAVE  A PROBLEM WITH THIS LETTER. ONE WOULD ASSUME THAT DISNEY HAS TO CREATE AN AFRICAN PRINCESS CHARACTER BECAUSE IT WOULD BE FAIR. DISNEY IS UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO ACOMMODATE ANY GROUP OF PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY FEEL LEFT OUT. IT IS PRESUMED THAT SINCE WE ARE PATRONS OF DISNEY PRODUCTS, THEY WOULD AUTOMATICALLY TREAT US WITH RESPECT. THROUGHOUT OUR HISTORY IN THE UNITED STATES, NO ONE HAS EVER AUTOMATICALLY TREATED US WITH RESPECT. IT WASN'T UNTIL WE FOUGHT IN THE CIVIL WAR OR MARCHED ON WASHINGTON OR WE STOOD A MILLION MEN STRONG DID WE RECEIVE RESPECT.  IF WE ARE NOT WILLING TO STOP BUYING DISNEY PRODUCTS, STOP GOING TO DISNEY WORLD OR DISNEY LAND, STOP LOOKING AT THE DISNEY CHANNEL, AND STOP LOOKING AT ABC SHOWS, WE WILL NOT HAVE A DISNEY AFRICAN PRINCESS CHARACTER. A PETITION WILL NOT SOLVE ANYTHING. MONEY TALKS AND BULL**** WALKS. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I think it would be nice but Disney has had a hard time dealing with ethnic groups in the past.  Remember Song of the South and Aladin.  If they did they'd probably mangle it.  Until they get a more diverse and sensitive concept and animation staff they shouldn't attempt a black princess.

and what exactly was wrong with song of the south?  that was a great movie and reminds me of when I used to sit under my grandparents and listen to their stories of the south. wasn't all Klansmen and segregration.  Zipodeedoodah zipodeeday!!!!

Actually from what i know  to create a mini  animation studio is less cost effective than a movie like love jones and to a certain extend more profitable . we can't have it immediately to my knowlege we can make it .  yeah 60k aren't easy to get but what company doesn't start with 2 pennies ?

I still don't see why people are crusading  Disney ( okay they are the biggest cartoon distributor ) , but hell we all know they are not going to be brown friendly . from what i saw their ethnic characters are always less dressed and so on.

my stance is clear this the part of the industry we are waisting our time and energy arguing with . we are just not in their mind frame , whether they think a african looking princess is marketable should not be an issue if at this day of age the medium is available for us to use.

Why should Disney set themselves up for all the B S lawsuits that would come from all the African American leaders & others? It would not matter how good the story or movie would be, Most African Americans would find fault with it, Because most believe that" anything white ain't right" !

From my understanding, the Song of the South was the only Disney feature that had 'black' characters until Atlantis.  Most of the movies mentioned(actually, I think ALL)...Mulan, Aladdin, Pocahantas (sp) were not made until after Walt Disney had died...Not sure if it is a culture around Disney though.

I DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND YOUR STATEMENT.

both your comprehension  and reading skills really suck .  well didn't the jew  sue your cousins the germans for supposely stolen paints ?

I never thought about the issue you raised, before (then again, I only went to Disney land , Ca because we couldn't go to Tijuana! LOL)

so, is a boycott in their future?!!

Boycott all you wish until AA effect the bottom line of Disney and that is their money they will like most white owned and controlled companies cater too the ones who spend the money and look like them!

Is this business or reality of business?

Either way unless you become a major playa you have no say so! Thanks

THE WORD AND SWORD....

What is wrong with Song of the South?  Well slaves and former slaves in Jim Crow era didn't walk around all happy with a smile singing songs like that.  It sterotypes the character and then people think "Look at him, he was a happy ole negro, didn't want no problems".  This is very damaging to the image of a black people.

I agree that we need to boycot Disney and all of it's subsideraries. If you want to make a change, then we must do it at home first. One way to make sure we have African American heroes, Princesses and Kings is to establish a venue for it to be made.

Jeff

I don't understand why you think Disney is responsible for creating a Black Princess?  Shouldn't that be left up to some of the moguls in the movie field that are black?  If blacks want a black princess then create one.  Put in the same amount of time, work and energy that Disney has been doing for years.  Disney doesn't owe it to anyone to create any certain type of princess.

Or the black community could do it themselves rather then expect Disney to do it for them.  Disney doesn't owe the public any type of princess.

I'm not "saliving" on any ethnic issue.  I'm asking a simple, direct question.  Who do blacks expect or think Disney has a responsibility to create a black princess??  Is Ice Cubes production company going to be expected to produce a show that promotes and represents whites??  Are black rappers going to be expected to do songs that do justice to whites?  Of course not.  They created themselves so have control over what they do and what they portray.  Disney has the same luxury.  If blacks want a black princess, then they should, by all means, create one.

How do I sign the petition? I would also like to write Disney!

it wasn't a question you were asking . re-read what you wrote. you stated black should make a black princess if they want one not the whites. it appeared to you that this was the problem. money was just a control point but never a means?. if it was just a matter of taking a pencil and designing an aaliyah-looking princess, anyone would have come up with that idea. my 5 year old neph you saw on my siggy can do that.

your argument about blacks doing this and that when they create their company is not 100% fool-proof. in most black movies you still see a white person passing by. also black companies more or less  manage valuable actors they want to send to hollywood . where other americans are, yes the whites . black rappers also talk about their friendship with some  friends who are either latino or whites . you better look inside the book. FYI  jazz saxophonists exist  and many are black and they regularly work on common projects with whites .Also blacks account to 12% of the population , it is downright selfish to exclude a portion of the population .

Disney was created when blacks were allowed by the same whites to get any work . talk about justice. Disney is American  just like the blacks and the entire palette of ethnicities should be represented in an appropriate manner .

Also since i read your posts every now and then, you are literally trapped in the ethnic arguments. you struggle to stay neutral in the name of equality . i actually wonder why it is difficult to even make an effort online if you can't do it in real life, what is your take ?

I'm not looking for some in depth conversation with you on my beliefs and thoughts, I don't need you to analyze me.  I'm comfortable with who I am, faults and all.

My statement was simple.  Disney doesn't owe it to anyone to create a black princess, period.  Boycotting them is silly, it would be like me boycotting Kanye West because he won't do a song the "white" way.

I never said it wouldn't be nice if Disney created a black princess, I don't care either way.  I simply said they don't owe it to anyone and not doing so is their choice.

As far as your comments about black movies having whites walking through them at times.  ????  Are you saying all Disney has to do is have a black person walk through one of their movies, because I believe that's been done.

For the record, Disney is famous all over the world, not just here in America.  America doesn't own Disney, the creators of it do.  They marketed their concept in a genious manner and now are reaping the rewards.  They don't owe the general public a thing. Everything I've paid Disney to get, I've received.

Yes i do agree Disney is racists and other toy companies. I never see littlewhit girls playing with black dolls. so i refuse to buy them for my girls. even when it's birthday or christmas time i will tell my family don't but them white dolls. I feel that if black kids can play with white dolls action figures or whatever why can't white kids do the same. Think about it?
