WASHINGTON – Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president, describing the Illinois senator as a "transformational figure."

Powell says both Obama and Republican John McCain are qualified to be commander in chief. But, in an interview Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," he said Obama is better suited to handle the nation's economic problems as well as help improve it's standing in the world.

Powell expressed disappointment in the negative tone of McCain's campaign, as well as in his choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Powell says he does not believe Palin is ready to take over as president, if necessary.

LOBBYIST

Have you noticed, the same pundents who say Hillary endorsement and Bill's endorsemen mattered, and without them, Obama has no chance? but Not Powells?

As far as I'm concerned this endorsement has sealed the deal.

Peace.

I’m very proud of Collin Powell. With him being a republican and very good friend of John McCain many of us thought (well I did) he would suggest McCain to be a better president.

Collin Powell knows greatly what a Black President can do as he himself was going to run some years ago.

Yes, I agree and I got the chills when thinking about it.

Do you post in English or only your own private language?

THIS   IS  MAJOR!    THIS   ENDORSEMENT  I   FEEL  WILL  BRING  EVEN   MORE   INDEPENDENCE   OVER  TO  OBAMA,  THEN   PALIN.ecstatic   WHAT   I  HATE  MOST,  IS   THAT   I   KNOW   THE  FAR-RIGHT  WILL  TRY  AND   SMEAR   OR   MAKE  THIS   MAJOR  ENDORSEMENT   OF  COLIN  POWELL.  LOOK  LIKE   NOTHING  MORE,  THEN  BLKS.  VOTING  FOR  ONE   OF  THEIR  OWN.

WHEN  IN   REALITY  IT  IS  SO  MUCH  LARGER  THEN  THAT!!! (DAM   I  HATE  REPUBLICANSyelling

Hillary and bill have played out,who needs them. They are wrong as two left shoes.Powell can help obama much more than those things called clinton.

What the heck are you talking about?  You remind me of the character Damon Wayans portrayed on "In Living Color".  The guy in prison who used big words but didn't make any sense.

To me Gen. Powell is the true Maverick.  He broke party lines and actually endorsed the best candidate.  A very good day for the Obama campaign and all of his supporters (me included!!).  Before he even said outright that he will be voting for Sen. Obama, he gave compelling evidence on WHY he was voting for him.  I knew from his explaination that he was endorsing Sen. Obama.  Oh, and I don't like Tom Brokaw.  They need someone else to helm Meet the Press.   He does a poor job.
LMAO---thanx dark...I was hoping SOMEBODY could decipher that or the author would confess to being from another planet.

I’m very proud of Collin Powell. With him being a republican and very good friend of John McCain many of us thought (well I did) he would suggest McCain to be a better president. the reality here is we KNOW Gen. Powell advised and work for two elephant people presidents but we can only assume, not know he himself is a republican. He worked for bush 1 because of his ascent thru the military and the president was not about to stop him from rising to joint chief of staff--as a soldier he is committed to following orders and as the president is the commander-in-chief, every respectful military leader will follow the orders a president issued. But it is a mistake to assume his political affiliation - then or now.

Collin Powell knows greatly what a Black President can do as he himself was going to run some years ago.  Please let's be accurate here. Gen. Powell NEVER put himself up as a potential candidate. It was strongly suggested by a lot of pundits as well as elected officials, but he never declared he was going to run.

Powell said what needed saying and thank god he's not running for office and was free to say things that soo many democrats have yet to address.

Oh, and I don't like Tom Brokaw.  They need someone else to helm Meet the Press.   He does a poor job.

I totally agree, Tom is so opposite of Tim Russert...All they  have done is turned Meet the Press into a conservative talk show...Today was the first day I watched since Tim died...I hope their ratings suck...They are already talking down to the endorsement...They are freaking out...

Powell broke it ALL THE WAY DOWN....nothing more needs to be said after that appearance on Meet the Press - this clip is all too powerful.

I can never get tired of watching that.  Powell's words were poignant and powerful.

So thank you for the "extra helping".   winking

I agree... Powell is a TRUE "Maverick"... and not at all like the played out opportunists that are McCain and Palin.

Before he even said outright that he will be voting for Sen. Obama, he gave compelling evidence on WHY he was voting for him.

"Compelling"... that's sums up his endorsement of Obama perfectly.

After Powell gave his endorsement I said to myself 'now let's just sit back and watch. It'll just be a matter of time before some dimwitted neocon-loving idiot labels Powell as a traitor. And just as I expected, the sun hasn't even gone down yet and already, Pat Buchanan was on Hardball Sunday with Chris Matthews using thinly veiled language that describes Colin Powell as a traitor to his party. These idiots are so predictable and so pathetic.

Now where is that troll that calls himself dark republican? Let's see what kind nonsensical spin he's going to put on this latest development.
