Hi,

First i want to say all my sister are God's Beautiful Women. I to had this same problem. I used permes for a long time and my hair was getting thin. One day I  just stopped using the perms and went natural. At first my hair was breaking but i stayed with with I finally got rid of the perm and went to straightening my hair. I want to also leave you this web site i went to when all the sister with long hair and natural hair have tips. ok this is really good site for the sister who only wants to go natural check it out. here my tip: I use oil tree for 24 hours in my hair. the next day I wash my using nuetrogena shampoo and condition, then I use kara leave in condition and blow dry my hair. Once my hair is blow dryed I wait an hour before i press it (i do my own pressing now) or you can go to the hair dresser. what choice you choose will still be good since your starting our go to the saloon and when you see the results you will feel like you have a perm in your hair and the softness. Since I been doing this my hair has gotten longer and thick. see the website and pass this on to other sister. Its nothing wrong with doing what GOD intended for us women of color to do and thats to be beautiful all the way around.

www.healthytextures.typepad.com GO here and you can also get some good tips. ok I hope this information were helpful.

Take care sister

I had the same problem with relaxing my hair too much with chemicals and it broke off really bad in the middle so I decided to go natural.  I also started with just brading my hear ever 2 to 3 months.  Once it grew out I went and began to loc my hair.  My hair was really short (about an inch long) when I first began locing and thought that I would not like it because it was soooooooooo short, but my husband really liked it.  I have been locing for four years now.  Going natural, locing is best thing that I could have every done for my hair.  It is really much stronger and I love it. I go about every 4 weeks and let my styles do my maintenance and style for me.  I don't even do my own hair.  Just try it, I think that you will love it.

you are not dreding your hair you are locking it.if you don't know ask. look into some naural braids that will give you the look you want.it is nothing wrong with your hair it just needs to form its self it will take time.

When I saw this post, I just had to reply to it and give or get some feedback. I came to the revelation his past month that I was going to go natural. Back in July I realaxed my hair one morning and proceded to wash it out and later condition it. Well in combing through my conditioner that came with the kit, strands upon strands of my hair were coming out. I PANICKED!!! I COULDN'T BREATH!!! I had never had hair to come out when I comed any product through my hair NEVER!! But this time I did. Once I dried it and put a bit of oil on my hair, I saw where my once relatively thick hair was like on one side of my head where the other side had thinned out dramatically and you could now see clean through my strands. I was hurt. I saw where there were places that had been broken off with uneven strands where it was all once even. I could do nothing but pull it back and go. And I have not been to a beautician since August and it was a Dominican hair salon. I love this salon and my beautician. She told me that there were spots that she saw and hair that was not terribly uneaven, but there was alot of shedding. She made me feel better after purchasing a chemical from Alter Ego for hair breakage....I was not happy with it and paid $30 bucks for it and still had shedding. Well I still experieance some shedding, but not a whole lot. I think it will run its course. Each time I comb my hair i see see about 5-10 strands of hair, not like before. But not to ramble. That experience has made me want to go natural. I am about 4-5 inches just above bra lenght, normal hair texture with about an inch to 2 inches of new growth. I do love to run my hands to the scalp to acquaint myself with it because its what I want to see all over. I am thinking about doing Kinky Twists at the end of this month and have made an appointment with an African Hair Braiding gallery here where I live. As far as maintaining goes, I just make sure that I moisturize on a daily basis. I use Nexxus Moisturizing Shampoo and Nexxus Humectress Conditioner. They work very well in deep cleaning and moisturizing my hair because the conditioner is time released and works to keep hair hydrated on a everyday. I also use light oils such as coconut, olive, or a hair moisturizer, all used in moderations as not to clog the scalps pores, but keep it quenched with as shine. I can't wait to give my hair the respect it has needed for years now. I had to ask my mom what my hair was like before she put relaxers in my hair and find pictures of it as well. I HAD LOOOOONG CURLY HAIR THAT HAD A WAVE PATTERN AT THE ROOTS!!! I was like aahhhhhh, I WANT THAT BACK, but I feel I am well on my way to making my hair a crowning glory again, I haven't felt as if I have done it justice over time, but not anymore!! So any of you out there thinking of going natural go ahead and do so, it will save you money, it will bring you back to your roots, literally, and it will give you a piece of mind that soon your hair will be healthier leaving you happier. I know in my heart I will be. If its possible I would love to post some pictures of my transformation over time with this odyssey im taking. Love to you all and may God bless!!

PS....I am soooo sorry for the length of this post, but it think it was God's way of letting me know that I am and was not alone in this transformation....ecstatic

Find a good dominican shop and let them deal with your hair. Prices differ depending on your location but you will love the results.  I stop perming my hair four years ago due to breakage from perms.  I was informed by a dermatologist that my ends where split to the roots and recomended I stop perming my hair.  As a woman of color---I was thinking yeah right.  Then a friend recomended a shop.  Four years later--my hair is down to my arm pits.  When i walk--my hair walk.  I feel like i'm on top of the world. I keep my ends trimmed frequently as if i have a perm, i don't use any products in my hair after my visit or do I use heat.  Get deep conditioners. I also pin curl my hair or wrap my hair plus use a bonnet to sleep.

Hi,

Like you I’m transitioning as well.  I do like my light curly hairstyles. However, this past summer it was hot as usual and so could not be bother with blow drying and curling and having it all undone by the time you leave the house from sweating…lol  So I started just lightly wetting it and wear a ponytail…but I braid the ponytail so by the time I get to work, I take the band off and run my fingers through it and let it hang… I love it…It also reduced breakage as I was no longer over working it with heat and excessive combing.  My best friend got dreds earlier this year and they are beautiful on her but they are not for me…  So I will try the kinky twists (untwisted) as I love that look too.  Healthy natural hair is so beautiful, personally I think it enhance the black woman’s natural beauty.

I ran into that problem 27 years ago when I was in medical school. I had  decided to go natural after perming my hair for only about 4 years. When I had about 1 inch of new grow, I cut my hair into a short afro. Thirteen years later, I grew dreadlocks. The thing to remember is to be patient, while your hair and scalp recovers and heals.  Over the years, much of the damage done to my hair by perming is now history. In a few years, you'll be wondering why you every chose to perm your hair in the first place.  Just remember that the chemicals in the perm that you use to straighten your  hair are the  same chemicals in Nair, the hair remover! Hang in there. Peace.winking
Hi for some reason, I'm just seeing this.  I'm a newly natural.  My last relaxer was April 2nd of this year and I officially began my transition on May 9.  That very same day I cut between 13-15 inches of hair b/c I didn't want to deal with all that long hair during my transition.  I work kinky twists and braids for 6 months and cut the remaining relaxed ends on Oct 4th.  Since your hair is long, I would suggest you do braid outs and twist outs on wet hair.  Preferrably with some kind of setting lotion.  This style can usually last 7-10 days if cared for properly.  Also, you may want to try doing some wet roller sets to help camoflauge the 2 textures.  Hope this helps sis and keep fighting, your hair will love you for it.

I can finally reply to a blog that applies to me... I gave up perms and relaxers years ago. The health and length of my hair is incredible. I developed a system and a habit that works but takes some getting used to.

When I first transitioned, I tried wetsetting but the end result was big hair.  If you have considerable new growth it is ok to use a pressing comb or a flat iron.  It's a good idea to have your professional stylist to do it, if you don't know how to prevent burning the hair.

Stay away from blow drying your hair and using hot curlers daily.  They damage the ends and dry out the hair.  If you have to use it do it once then follow up with curlers.

I use olive oil on my ends.. Very good. Keeps them moisturized and its natural.

Remember the ends are the oldest most abused part of your hair and will split and break off.

Don't be afraid to have your ends clipped.  Keep clipping every 2 to 3 months until the old chemical part of your hair is gone.

Try to find an easy style that doesnt require you to constantly comb it throughout the day.  The less you comb or handle it the stronger your hair will remain.

YOu're not going to like this one, but you don't have to wash your hair every week... Sometimes I go for 3 weeks.  The natural oils  are good for the hair.  Keep foreign products out of the hair too.

Good luck. Dana

There is a product that black voices mentioned before @ www.kinky-curly.com which is products for people with curly hair and hair that is more dry. I as a man like the concept for people in general who need it give it a once over it may be something good for you if you want to preserve moisture

Hi,

I know this is a late response but I would be more than happy to share some of my natural hair transitions experiences and tips.

Not everything works for everyone and while I love and admire my sisters with locs and braids, Ive found that locs are not for me and i have never worn braids. I have seen people do beautiful tihngs with these styles but ive always been one who prefers either straight or curly and I have a staple of items i use for both styles and they work wonders. I have never done wigs or weaves but If u are interested in my technique or u have any questions please let me know. I will gladly share with you.

I have tips for detangling, straightening (sometimes necessary for corporate america, personal style or convenience) and even enhancing your natural texture without chemicals.

Hello Isheirish,

I myself decided to go natural and faced the exact same problem as you.  I had taken my braids out and washed it and couldn't hardly comb it. I pulled out soooo much of my permed hair and it ended up looking a HOT MESS!  So I combed it all back into a ponytail. The two textures was driving me plum crazy and with my permed hair being so damaged, I didn't want it on my head any longer.  The transition process with braids was cut VERY short.  I instead, after 4 days of unacceptable hair, I did the Big Chop myself.  It was the best decision, my hair turned out so much nicer than I thought it would.  I'm going to let it grow out for 1-1 1/2 years in braids.  Good luck to you on your journey!

Hi PeopleJustignorant,

Please share your tips/items you use on straight or curly hair.  I used to wear perms for many years, but switched to press and curl or flat iron for the last 3-4 years.  I like the straight look, but my biggest problem is that it won't stay straight for very long.  As soon as I sweat a little, it starts to get poofy especially at the edges.  I don't care for locs, braids, wigs or weaves.  I'm willing to try twists though, so I can take them out when I'm ready.  (mgjhawkins' picture is slammin' - I'm not sure what she does; posted 10/15/08)  I like the wave/curl that my hair has when it's wet, but as soon as it dries, it's poofy and wild.  I wish I could get it to stay the way it looks when it's wet.  I would like to be able to straighten it again when I want to.  I have what some would call a pretty good grade of hair.  It's shoulder length

Is your hair locked in that picture you posted?  It is slammin'.  How do you do it?  what kind of locks are they?
It's important to condition, and condition and  I mean condition our hair! I have experienced the same problem however I found this website excusively on how to care for natural hair, www.motowngirl.com  This website is the Bomb. It advises you how to care for your natural hair, and illustrates different hair styles for natural hair. Trust me. Check it out!!!! Also, remember what your mother use to do to your natural hair when you was a little girl.
I started going natural 2 years ago, I started doing Zillions then inbetween getting an inch or 2 taken off. Like your hair my hair grows very fast and is thick. I just purchased Kinky Curly shampoo and conditioner with the styling gel to bring out the natural curl my hair has. I only know that they do have a website and you can purchase it online. My daughter is 3 and I started using it in her hair and it works great. I love the shampoo it really cleans her thick hair. You can try that product and it should bring out your natural waves in your hair so you can wear it down again. Google Kinky Curly and they have the before and after pictures online along with ordering. You can purchase a select stores if they are close to you.
Don't think of going natural as a death sentence, it will take awhile getting use to but you will be fine.  Here are some websites you should check out: www.nappturality.com  and www.mykinkycreed.com . I have been natural for 2 1/2 years and I'm loving it. The freedom to excercise, not freak out if I get caught in the rain, worrying about my hair reverting is no longer a concern. Its very liberatingsmiling

YOU NEED TO CUT THAT STUFF (THE RELAXER PART) AND STOP TRYING TO WEAR IT LONG FOR NOW. IT WILL LOOK MUCH BETTER AND YOU WILL FEEL BETTER. I USED A RELAXER IN MY HAIR FOR OVER 25 YRS..I AM TIRED OF THE UPKEEP AT 55 YRS OLD..  OUR NATURAL HAIR IS SOMUCH EASIER , YOU CAN KEEP IT FRESH AND WELL CONDITIONED AND HEALTHIER. KEEP IT TRIMMED EVERY 6-8 WEEKS AT A LEVEL THAT IS COMFORTABLE FOR YOU ( I KEEP MINE REALLY SHORT), WASH ANYTIME AND JUST GO. IT IS OUR OWN NATURAL LOOK AND I FEEL LIKE MYSELF AGAIN AND SO DIFFERENT FROM EVERYBODY ELSE....AND THE BROTHERS REALLY LIKE ITecstatic
