Domican hair stylists..........(189)
|
I was wondering what my sisters out there think of Domican women doing our hair  I have been going to them for 3  years now........ love them to death. But also feel a bit guilty b/c I am taking the business away from my sisters who do hair. I go to them b/c they are always professional, get me in and out in a timely manner, the prices are great! I was in and out on Friday in 1 hour and 10 minutes..... wash/set and blow out..... and if I get a perm, it takes me 2 hours at the most..... and that is on a VERY busy day. My hair has NEVER been healthier....  It got so frustrating for me as a black women, who is very busy to go to a black salon and made to wait for 2 hours just to get my head in the wash bowl... let alone get anything else done.... and I also was tired of them leaving me wet, wrapped in a towel while my stylist ran off to pick her man up from the train station or running to grab a fish dinner from the local church! And then would have the nerve to come back, sit down and eat it while she had 5 women lined up waiting to be serviced. I am sure that most of us have had this same scenario happen.... on MORE than one occasion.... the only thing that is different are the players. Being taken for granted didn't feel good at all. I hate to say this, but I don't think I will ever go back to a black stylist again. In my 37 years of life, I have had over 10 black hair stylists and none of them have worked out. I am not saying that all Domincan stylists are the same, but they are hungrier than our hot comb, perm weilding sistas....... they assumed for far too long that we had nowhere else to go and that they could treat us any way they wanted. I hope that stylist realize that their competition has arrived and what, IF anything, are they going to do to preserve their hold on black hair care market? Does anyone else out there care to share in this discussion? |

Dominicans have African Ancestory, and for all intensive purposes, most of them are Black too. So although you may have taken your business from the Black American businesses, you are still doing business with black people, on a Hispanic level. You did the right thing in going to whomever is more efficient. Damn waiting all day just to get your hair done. People got lives to lead, and it does not include sitting in a shop for 5 hours. I've been there and done that, and I refuse to do it ever again. |

Girl, I feel your pain! I refuse to go back to a black salon too because of what I went thru just a few weeks ago. I went to this girl and got a very short cut...the girl could do some hair, OK! But.....this heffa was rarely in the salon, and I would have to call her on her cell to see where she was! One time, she "forgot" my appointment because she had to go to a church BBQ to help out! I waited 30 minutes, then left! I was fuming! Then, she had the nerve to call me an hour later on my cell, but I didn't pick up. She left a message asking if I wanted to come back...HELL NAW! And she was always eating, ordering food, taking classes, church functions, etc. I finally stopped going, got some braids, and VOWED to never go back to a salon! I will let myhair grow back naturally.... I too went to a Dominican salon, and they are very professional, and get you in and out! WHat they realize is that you make more money when you do more heads! DUH! Sistahs take 2-3 hours to do 2 head....the Dominicans can get 2-3 sistahs out by then! I went, and true, they get you in and out in a hour or so, less if the salon is not as full! I loved that joint, and will be going back when I take my braids out.... I am all for supporting sistahs and black business, but I value good service better, regardless of color..... Hey...do you know if they do natural hair????? |

I'm with you to the fulliest, I grew up in bklyn , I'm black with a good grade of hair and i had my hair done by dominican's as well they  do a hell of a good job, there hair looks healthy and long so there for i don't mind them putting a lil garlic in mines . The sisters on the other hand keep the fly styles but how healthy is their hair... , Yes u do wait a while in the sisters shops but you get a very good conversation as well.   I wish i was still in Bklyn then my hair would probably be twice as long for a not so exspensive price... I live in Northern California and unfortunately we don't have any Dominican hair stylists here cause I'd sure be going to one. First of all I hear that the Dominicans don't charge as much as do Black hair stylists. Personally I feel that Black hair stylists charge too much money for a shampoo and set. The going rate here in California is $40.00 for a shampoo, blow dry and flat iron; that's too much money in my opinion. Black people tend to have a negative work ethic that holds them back as well. I notice this negative work ethic with a lot of Black women I work with. We as a people have better get our ish together or we'll continue to be left behind.Â

I love the Dominicians also. When I lived in New York I tried them after a girfriend who was just wearing waves she kept going and they had her hair past her neck which she said the only time that was the case was when she was a child. I live in Charlotte, North Carolina now there are no Dominicans here just Mexicans (And youknow that a Sister from Bed-Stuy, Clinton Hill is not gonna let just any hands go in her head and Mexicans ones at that don't think so!)Â When I lived in New York I also have a great friend who is Trinidadian who would hook my hair up. I don't trust the "beauticians" down here so I wear my hair natural now. The only thing I do have a problem with the Domnicans is they use those Extra Super Hell Hot Hair Dryers lol but they are cool and don't charge a damn arm a a leg and try to talk you death or get in your business. Keep going!

I pay about $60 for a press. |

i would have to say that not all of Black stylist are slow, always doing other things and overcharge. I am a stylist and charge my clients what I think are reasonable prices ( shampoo & set $25, deep conditioners $5 extra). I never believed in over charging my clients because that would send them else where. As for as my techniques of doing hair, i don't believe in doing anything to the hair that is "unhealthy". I tell my clients that I do not do "hard up-dos" that can last for a month. But what i do is show them they can have a beautiful head of hair. That is one of the miss conception of us (Black stylist) is that, that all we do is unhealthy hair. But my biggest pet pive is the fact that we are never on time or we are to slow. I am sorry but I just don't have that kind of time to waist doing other things than my job. That is why most of them charge so much is because they behinds are just "LAZY". Maybe that is why my prices are so cheap, but i don't have any complaints. The only one I had was when I was on maternity leave and my clients wanted to come to my house and get their hair done.  |

Am 28 years old and I have only have had was two, Joanne and Mitchell. I started to go to Joanne when I was 12 and had been going to her until I had moved away. She always was on time and taught me everything that I know about doing hair. When she used to do my hair, it would always have this beautiful shine and body. She never did hard styles because of the texture of hair i have ( it's soft and would break from all that holding spray). As for Mitch, I just would go to him when I wanted to have a bad a** hair cut and color. He too, taught me very well. I can't say that i have experienced it for myself, but i have seen it from working in a salon and even going to school. |

Girl, don't feel bad. I think if more black women stood up and demanded better service from their stylists this wouldn't be going on. But noooooooo, we'd rather sit up in the salon all day for the sake of looking good. Any other time black women would be livid if they went into any other place of business and received terrible service. As long as black women keep eating up the poor service these stylists are serving they'll continue to operate their businesses in this manner. I'm glad that after going to black stylists for 10+ years I finally found a sista that knows the meaning of customer service and I ain't going nowhere!

I visited the Dominican Republic in 1992 and because the Dominican Republic is closer to the East Coast I assume that most Dominicans settle in places like New York rather than Cali. Wow you pay $60.00 for a press and curl? Of course from your pic you have a lot of hair so I assume that most hair stylists base their prices on length and thickness of hair. Still I think that Black stylists just charge too much money for their hair services. I work with a lot of Asian and Hispanic women and they don't pay nearly the prices we do for salon services. When I tell them how much I pay my stylist they just sit there and look at me for five minutes with their mouths open. Â

5 on your post. I'm 46 years old and have finally found out that after 46 years of living on this earth folks do you how you let them do. I think that in the case of a lot of Black folks we are used to being abused. I notice that white folks are quicker to speak up about their rights and would never tolerate or patronize shabby establishments that Black folk do.Â

I just moved to Cleveland from NY and i cannot find a dominican salon ANYWHERE!!! and I agree with most of the ladies here, I found a much better experience with them rather than the sisters... also I am not used to paying $35-40 on a wash and set I was so used to $15-20...If there is anyone from cleveland on here who knows of a shop, please help!!!!!!!! Regards |

If you are moving to Baltimore, there is one Dominican Shop that I know of. If you are moving to PG Co. or Mont. Co., then there are several Dominican shops that you will have access too. Where do u live cause i live in PA but plan on relocating to MD and i'm gonna have to find a new dominican hairstylist? Executive Producer Dick Wolf |
