Do you remember any of these songs? Are their descriptions accurate? Have you heard them recently? Let us know what you think. (personally, I'm loving that I can play the full version of fight the power all day every day!) lol

Oh, can I remember this song, I remember the whole album.  My mom  played it every Saturday when she was in her cleaning mood.  When we woke up and heard Marvin Gaye, Smokey, Curtis Mayfield......we were going to be doing some serious cleaning.  When we woke up and heard jazz, that was going to be a great day, jazz was the cook out music!!
He may have been my "ex" husband, but he introduced me to Marvin and "soul" music. Love it! "Fight the Power" was cool, too. After all, it was in one of the first Spike Lee movies.
Marvin Gaye had the jams. He was my introductory "soul" man. Later I found out we share a birthday. Not too many people can say they don't like Marvin.

Now that's amazing, I've heard that out of ever 7 people you know, they know 7 other people that knows some one famous......just thought I would throw that in there for free.  So what do you do on your birthday?  When is your birthday?

No, my ex husband introduced me to his music (Marvin Gaye's). His/my birthday are April 2. Thanks for the response.
Oh, okay, I got it now.

I remember them and then some.

I also remember that there were more than just vocalists involved with R&B's "genesis" as the "Top 11" list would lead some to believe. Remember The Funk Brothers? Many might have seen the movie about them. I suspect that many have not. The Funk Brothers were the band that backed practically evrything that came out of Motown before the label's move to the west coast. Think about the level of influence that group of musicians had on those future musicians who came later. That band had musicians that influenced R&B musicians for years and continues to do so.

I find it interesting that the list of genius' posted on the site today didn't list such greats as Roberta Flack, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Curtiss Mayfield and legions of others who's vocal and musical abilities are being parroted to this day. My point is that it wasn't simply vocalists. There were writers, producers, engineers and a host of other behind the scenes folks who played a role in creating what is referred to as R&B. And then there was the message in the music. If the music didn't resonate with the listening masses...we wouldn't be talking about R&B today.

I agree that corporate radio is turning the genre to a wasteland of sameness. And its a shame that people don't seem to hold dear those who've come before...remember Philipe Wynne? And how can anyone leave out the Georges (Clinton & Duke)? How can a list have Anita Baker (one of the best) and leave off Al Jarreau? (The article does say "Top 11".)

It's also a shame that some people seem intent on discounting what came before in order to promote what comes lately...

"...You have eyes and you have a brain. QUIT BLINKIN' AND THINK!!!"

YES, I DO REMEMBER ALL OF MARVINS SONGS AS WELL AS STEVIE ,CURTIS AND MORE. JAZZ TOO. IT WAS CLEANING DAY WHEN I HEARD MY SISTERS AND BROTHER PLAY THESE ARTIST SONGS,AND WE WERE ALL DANCING AND SINGING ALONG WITH THEM. IT WAS IN 1966 OR 67 THATS WHEN YOUNG CHILDREN, COULD BE KIDS AND NOT HAVE PARENTS WORRY ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN CAUSE THE WHOLE NEIGHBOORHOOD WAS A FAMILY. REMEMBER WE ARE FAMILY? BY SISTER SLEDGE? PEACE AND HAIR GREASE.

Hey, those were the days.  What was the name of ths song that said,"the same people you meet going up, are ths same people you meet going down".  Girl, alot of those songs still hold true today.

your family sounds alot like mine...It sure brings back some good memories..
Yeah, just thinking about them puts a smile on my face.....you know how something doesn't seem fun, or funny at the time, but with time, age and wisdom, it just makes you laugh sometimes until tears start to roll.  The things we used to do to get out of those Saturday mornings that never worked.

Thankyou, itis a pleasure to hear music from my generation fight the power, hell below etc.

somebody ougta put together a  cd , of yesterday con trversial songs and put them togehter with some of to todays and see the differences and the similiarities

Yes!  I remember Marvin Gaye. I play his music on a regular basis.

I agree the descriptions are up tp par.

The Isley Brothers are one of a kind. From the 60's until now, thats staying power, and knowing how to put it together.

I have to say Prince is THE MAN.

This is my first time doing the blog thing.

Thank you,

originalfriday

Do we all have the same song?

Though I can NEVER argue about Marvin, The Funk Brothers, or any other of the countless greats that helped shaped the music and the rights of artists' music  today, but wasn't the song "Sign O' The Times"?

When that song came out I was a teen and in my little sheltered world we didn't know about all those things going on (except aids). Still to this day you can play that song and it would be as if it were made today. Up until this point people thought Prince was just a sex freak. This song set him apart. People started noticing that he had depth and insight.
