When I was a kid growing up there were black bands that song and played instruments

There were bands like Cameo, The Gap Band, Zapp, Ohio Players, Barkays, Earth Wind and Fire, Parliment, Confunkshun, Lakeside, etc

All of those bands song and played INSTRUMENTS

1. Today there are no young black bands out that sing and play instruments

Whatever happened to black bands

Heyyy you forgot Mint Condition!!!! I hear you I actually miss people who knows how to play instruments. I wish Black Bands would make a comeback but the way the industry is now it probably won't happen.

When I was a kid growing up we had 1000's of black bands that song and played instruments

We had everybody from the Gap Band to Parliment

1. Now the black community is down to 1 black band-----Mint Condition

2. And they are not hot anymore like they use to be

Drum Machines, sequencers and Computers, i.e. (Technology)

Literally, hundreds of reasons....as someone just stated, the fact that it is so much easier to make music with all the electronic sequencers, computer programs, synthesizers, drum machines etc...it's easier for one person to make music this way versus getting different musicians to play the instruments......then the fact that 90% of the youngsters growing up would rather be rappers than singers or musicians, and that there seems to be much more money in being a lead performer or solo producer versus just being a member of a band...plus the fact that you have to deal with so many different egos, which is why many bands didn't last throughout the years.....plus the fact that music as a whole changed and isn't as heavily musical as it was in the 70's and 80's....I mean the hit songs on radio may ONLY have a synthesized kick, snare/clap, hi hat, and may or may not have any sort of melody at all.......plus the fact that most kids or youngsters don't have the patience to play instruments, and there are hundreds of other distractions out there now compared to the 60s and 70s, where kids could just sit in their room practicing their instrument...they are distracted by the internet, video games, gangbangin, and all else that's out there....

I could keep goin and goin, but those are the primary reasons in my opinion.

Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin didn't have much technology, but the songs they made 30 years ago------radio stations are still playing those songs today

And people are going to be playing Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin songs a 100 years from now if this world still be around

1. Today there is more technology in music-----and the music is terrible, music is the worst it has ever been

2. The songs that people are making today, nobody is going to want to hear those songs 30 years from now

Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin didn't have much technology to work with------but they made songs that people are going to be listening to a 100 years from now

1. Today there is more technology than ever------but with all of this technology are people putting out QUALITY music like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder

2. In 2006 there are 1000's of young white kids that have rock bands, and they are carrying on that tradition------But today there are no young black bands that sing and play live instruments

Thing is, companies realize that true quality and longevity of music isn't a key selling point as it used to be...they could care less if an album is good in ten years...they just want to make it sell as much as possible when it first comes out. Hence the reason that people focus so much on first week sales, when back in the 80s, albums didn't start moving major units til 2-3 months after it dropped. Thriller didn't even debut at #1 if I can remember, and if it did, it didn't sell much...but about 5-6 weeks later, it took off.

Technology makes it easier for anybody to call themselves a damm producer, and people focus on the elements that tend to catch people's ears the fastest, which is drums, catchy hooks, and catchy melodies. All you need is drums and a few instruments, and the song's lyrics can talk about whatever the hell they want to.

Yeah, white kids do still have rock bands, but that's because the energy in rock and roll is driven by live instruments...which isn't the case for Pop music, rap, or modern r&b. At the same time...many black youngsters see their stars on TV driving the most expensive cars, all carrying that "swagger" that they all look up to, and most of that is driven by individuality...so many young blacks just want to take the path that will focus most on their individual achievements versus achieving this goal through a group. That's why you rarely see any R&B groups in the mainstream, and if you do, they always break up. At the same time, it's easier for companies to manage a solo artist, versus a group or a band. They don't have as many heads to keep up with, and they don't have to panic when some members don't want to come through.

But back to the streets...many black youngsters just aren't as interested in playing these instruments, and it has to do with black culture. The fact that 90% of these kids want to rap, as I stated earlier, makes it a gigantic difference from white kids, when "bands" are still a good connotation. Along with the individuality that these black kids focus on, it goes back to Hip Hop culture being based on battling and the braggadocio dealing with "I'm better than you", which makes it more of a one on one sport. You can also say that it has to do with finances...white kids tend to have the means to buy all types of instruments...but most black kids won't even consider this unless they have a parent who was a musician, and usually that would be a male...and we know the men aren't as present as they used to be.

And overall....the art of the black band has just been washed out. R&B went more pop and hip hop during the late 80's, and this means that companies and artists focused more on the synthesized production versus the art of having a band. I could keep going and going on the reasons that black kids aren't as interested in playing live instruments....it's not seen as being "cool" as it used to be, or as it is for white kids. And most of them want to be some kind of star...so they find it impossible to be a star when you are just a member of a band...which is why they'd prefer being a rapper, producer, singer, DJ, or athlete.

The majority of the artists of the old days went to church and it was important then to have some type of talent in church. That is where they learned to play their instruments and perfect their craft (singing). These days these people coming out now wouldn't know what the inside of a church looked like if they didn't have to go to a wedding or funeral or have television.
Next, music now is about money. There is no love for the art of music anymore. These people could care less about the quality of music and the words that they are sending over the airways.
Then you have the lust of the flesh and the pride of life.
SEX.
SEX.
SEX. That is all I see these days. I don't even watch BET or MTV anymore unless there is a special on because the videos are nothing but soft porn, well as soft as porn can be. They up on the stage half-naked, gyrating body parts, slinging everything that mama (and daddy) gave them and couldn't get a note right if one came and jumped down their throat.
People just want money and sex now.
There is no more love for the art of music or singing for that matter. I don't listen to much music from the past 10 years or so. I am still in the 50's, 60's 70's and early 80's.

The Chosen One of Zion

Record companies say they are losing money------with this sorry music they are putting out, it's no wonder they are losing money

Who is going to pay 16 dollars for a CD full of sorry songs

I haven't bought a CD this year------I like real music, and I don't hear any real music out here

1. There was a rap song call Shake your Laffy Taffy-----that song is written on a 3rd grade level

2. A 10 year old kid could have come up with that corny song

What happened to black bands?

Answer-  Gangster Rap- the dumming down of black music

You are 100% right------The GAP BAND grew up playing music in their father's church, and that's how they got good

And they can perform their behind off, and they've had hit after hit

1. Now days if you go to a rap concert-------there is no band on stand, just a rapper and his boys rapping over a SOUND TRACK

2. Why would anybody pay to go and see somebody rap over a sound track

Like the man said,'and the melody remains the same' Black music instrumental players are still around, but many play for anyone who hires them[the day job, remember] Plus most had other trades that they were doing and the music part was just part of the trip. You are young, got lucky, has a couple of hits, things change, thank GOD you learned a trade. You lost your teeth, and tone in the Nam, Thank GOD you still got your mind. Learn a new trade. 'and the melody remains the same'....jbg

Are we going to have any young black bands to replace Cameo and Earth Wind and Fire when they are gone

Or is that part of black history going to die out

Black youngsters that go to church in most black cities take music lessons, the ones who play behind some of the best rap tracks are little pissant musicians. Believe me there will be a resurgence of black music. The instruments are cheaper. Hell you can buy a trumpet, clairnet, saxophone for 100 or less. Guitars for 30 dollars? Hell when I was a frigging kid you had to beg your parents to buy you an instrument, they cost an arm and a leg I was told. I had to STEAL my first trumpet. Black children from grade school need the proper push. If I was an ewf or a cameo I would teach it to a lot of kids, and use their asses to make more money....ie my music Idol dexter gordon, donald byrd.

I'm a musician-----and when I go into music stores

1. The white kids are in the guitar department buying guitars

2. And the black kids are in the DJ equipment department

Go to any Guitar Center and this is what you will see

you are right as rain! I see that all the time at the local one here in Dalton, Ga. We allways try and take the easy way out. You my man are an Entertainer, That puts you in a different class. I hope you go far. At least to the frigging top. I pray to hear you on the radio, someday.Do not give up. You never know. Keep a day job, untill the Master gives you your 15 minutes. Then make it last an hour or at least a day.

Because we aren't developing very good r&b singers and musicians, we're basically "giving away" r&b to other folk.  There just is no real connection (besides sampling) with younger kids to old school musicianship.  Hell, nowadays any recording with real instruments being played is considered jazz.

The Best Of Old School Soul Music

I play guitar and bass------I've already been bless to play for some well known artist that has sold millions of records.

I've played for artist that have won Grammy awards, MTV awards, Soul Trian awards, etc

TERRIFIC! I HOPE YOU BECOME VERY FRIGGING FAMOUS AND RICH. AS A MATTER OF FACT I WILL PRAY THAT YOU DO.
