Mother's Day is this Sunday, May 10. We're putting together a special package on celebrity moms but want to hear about the real moms who tirelessly raised and supported you in good times and bad. Give a shout out to her right here and we'll feature some of them on Black Voices as part of our coverage. What better (and free) way to show how much you care?

Although my mom is young, she is very wise and has this intuition from God that can shake you to the bone..lol...Although we grew up in South Central LA it didn’t feel like what we used to see in movies or hear on rap songs. She has always been a Lioness to her cubs and will cut a ninja up if you do anything to us (since she is an Evangelist she will pray for you after she cuts you). She took us places most kids didn’t know about and exposed us to quality things. Even the things that I don’t agree with or understand have made me into a better woman and I love her with all my heart.
Much like another story here she took in 2 of my cousins; drug addicted as well, and has raised them as her own. She has one grand child that looks JUST like her and another on the way. Today she passed her exams and told me she can now state the state exam for real estate. News like this makes me so proud of my girl because at 17, when she had me people threw her away…but with the faith in her heart and the desire to do better she has survived and is blessed beyond measure.

My mom was a tough love kinda woman...She was one of those "tell it like it TIS is"... She was an excellent cook...made the best homemade desserts... Every Thanksgiving she made my favorite...chocolate cake and served it with strawberry ice cream... We always had Sunday dinner... Also, I could never hide anything from her...she knew all her children...inside out...sometimes it was spooky...LOL When I was younger and on my own and come visiting, she'd see me and ask "what's wrong?...don't tell me nothing is wrong because I can tell by the way you're walking"...lol. My mom was soft and had a beautiful smile...of which she gave to me. I sometimes look at pictures of myself and see my mom...she continues to live through me...I miss her dearly and this time is especially sensitive for my family as her birthday sometimes fell on Mother's Day... Happy Mother's Day to All the moms...

My Mom was a very talented singer and pianist (as well as the only Black yodeler I've ever known) I deeply regret that she was unable to manage her diabetes, and often wish they'd had the better glucometers available now, back in the day. Please enter your information Title: Duration: Descriptio

My mom survived polio when she was two years old. She went threw years of painful surgeries, long hospital stays, and lived with a handicap. She was told at a young age that because of the polio she would not live very long, she is now in her 60's, she was told she'd never be able to drive, she's been driving since she was 12, she was told she'd never be able to have children, she has three grown daughters.
I roll my eyes when someone tells me they can't work because they have bad knees, or they can't stand etc etc so they collect disability. My mother supported my sisters and I single handedly while having to endure my father's drunken tiraids, verbal abuse, and at time physical abuse. As I always say a man has to be a real low life to hit a woman, but he's a true slimeball if he hits a woman in a wheelchair and that is exactly what my father is.
My father rarely held a job, he was locked up relatvely often, sometimes for 3 years at a time for DWI's and still my mother got up everyday and went to work, crawling around on her knees to get around the house, and using a wheelchair in public. There were times when she was embarassed because people would stare or asked her why she was "crippled" a word that she loathes. There were times when we had to get food stamps, but never more than two months, my mother was too proud and got off of them as soon as she could.
When my middle sister hit 12 she started using drugs, hardcore drugs sending us all into an 18 year tailspin. The home was very hostile sometimes with my sister and my father both under the influence. When my nieces were 3 and 5, my father was in prison, my sister was selling herself for drugs and the courts took the kids from her. After raising 3 kids already, my mother recieved custody of the kids with the stipulation that either me or my oldest sister had to also be living there. We raised them for most of their lives, my sister got her act together 4 years ago and has been clean and sober and has gotten custody back. If it weren't for my mother, the girls would have ended up in foster care.
To this day my mother works full time supporting my still verbally abusive ass of of father who no longer hits her because she broke his ribs with her crutch, oldest sister who cannot hold job and never has, and her two daughters, and also raised my nephew who is now 20 and studying to be a minister in Mississippi.
I'd say she's earned mother of the year a hundred times over.

well my mother is the old lady from hell! she is 81yrs old and always threatening to stabb or shoot somebody. and that ain't no lie! a hundred years ago when i was a child she was a lot nicer but something kept snapping in her head and i now believe she and satan are related to each other. she cusses people out and leaves nasty messages on everybodies answering machine. my friends keep saying put meds in her drink but i say she ain't crazy just mean as hell. i have never cussed her out or anything like that because she is still my mother. but i'm getting ready to move i think i will forget to give her my phone number and address for a couple of years at least. my siblings can help her out much better than i can. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY MOM! HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL OF US WHO WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE MOM'S!
