COLDEST WINTER EVER 2 OUT NOW(147)
|
I have a serious bone to pick with SIster Souljah. She's finally penned the sequel to the GREATEST street novel in existence, The Coldest Winter Ever. The new book is called MIDNIGHT. Yeah, she wrote the sequel squarely around another character from the first book. HUH?! I don't get it people have been writing her for 10+ years practically begging her to follow up with a book about Winter and her younger sister and when she finally does she decides on Midnight. I'm sorry but I'm very disappointed. Of course I bought the book cause I wasn't not gonna buy it and of course so far so great but I think people are more interested about the girls rather than him at this point.
The book is new so I don't know if there are any people who've finished it but if someone has can you please drop me a hint. Will she mention where the girls are today? Is there a mention of another book at the end of this book? I'M SORRY FOR THE DOUBLE POST. I COULDN'T SEE THE THREAD WHEN I REFRESHED MY SCREEN AND THOUGHT I DID SOMETHING WRONG SO I DID IT AGAIN, SORRY. ![]() Edited by Valerie1981 on November 10, 2008 12:58:53 PM

I think I read CWE about 3 times back to back thinking it was going to somehow become Part 2. I am disappointed to find out that the sequel is about Midnight. But keep hope alive maybe she's just giving us a full background about Midnight first before she get to what folks really want to know about, Winter. I agree nobody gives a dam about Midnight but at the end she did start adding him in to the story a lot more?? I'm still going to get the book because its got to have some chapters on Winter.

I'm picking it up no matter what. I believe Souljah is such an incredibly visual writer than this will no doubt be just as good but from a male's perspective. ================================================== Trust in Jesus - no matter "WHAT" you're going through. Watch this video til the end to see a seriously strong testimony. God is soooo GOOD!!! |

I don't know...I'm torn a lil bit, because I think the beauty of CWE was that it had alot of mini-novellas in the story...and Winter's transitions were discussed so thoroughly, I felt as if Winter developed into at least three people. That's one thing I loved about the book. AND I think Midnight was certainly becoming a central character but had alot of stuff unsaid that I wanted to know about, so I kind of follow Sister's logic in making him the sequel. Also, I'm sure she wanted to pull in the male audience and there wasn't much left to tell about Winter that would pull them in, IMHO. But I do see where it would have made sense to continue where the book stopped, I just don't know if it had enough "meat" to make a second novel. I think sometimes writers claim that the characters kind of write themselves, so maybe she started with the intent to satisfy the masses but Midnight's character was really "calling" her as opposed to Winter...*shrugs*
Words on the DOME: "This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes,we can!! ~President Barack Obama "Don't worry...it's only KINKY the FIRST time..." MMM-WAHH! |

You are absolutely right. I forgot there were other younger siblings. Oh, please S. Souljah has plenty of meat for a 2nd story. And if she wanted to tell Midnights story she coulda added it in as the twins talk about their lives with him and his wife cause God knows those little kids have got to be in their mid-teens by now. There are so many avenues that she could went. I don't care how many pages the book would've been. What is she thinking? What are people in her circle telling her?

Honey I'm on page 27. Midnight hasn't even transformed into the sexy beast described in CWE. He's only 7 years old and just bought himself his first set of guns. =(
I'm not gonna cuss Souljah but dang it dang it dang it. She really went back in regards to him. I will keep folks posted if the girls make an appearance. Maybe the brotha will flash forward midstream. OFF TOPIC: you know the new EDJ book is coming out in like 2 weeks Dying for Revenge. |
|
I hope so cause I have so much hope for the Santiaga children.
OT: EDJ is killing it right now. Sleeping and Waking were my favorite by him thus far. I was rooting for all three characters. I ain't one to share but I couldn't see them going their seperate ways. I think I read that this book is a prequel to the previous 2. |

I'm not saying its the greatest regular novel ever penned. No. I'm talking about in regards to strictly street novels it IS the greatest. Look at these authors today talking about the drug game and living the high life. Those books are crap. The grammar and spelling errors alone make it crap. True to the Game is number 2 in my opinion. But, it was Sister Souljah who laid the foundation for today's street authors to flourish. There is no other street novel more celebrated than hers. Its a classic.
Girl, how you not learn anything? The lesson was clear as day....JUST SAY NO! =) |

I'd be interested in reading this story....and I think it's a great idea to make a spin-off on Midnight's character since we knew a lot about his history but we didn't really "know" him in the first book.
I'll admit...I never heard of this book outside of the BV boards. And, yes, I am an avid reader (I majored in English...my fav authors are Toni Morrison and Amy Tan among others). Folks hyped this book up like it was just the best thing, and I was disappointed after I read it. To me, it's typical urban pulp fiction - it was well written, and the storylines were interesting, but I would not call it great literature. However, I do think it would be a good movie if it were ever turned into a screenplay. ~The Poster Formally Known as JadeDragon~ ...after 7 years you'd think I'd be used to this.... |
