19 Year Old Commits Suicide on Webcam(71)
19-Year-Old Commits Suicide Live on Justin.tv While Commenters Egg Him On
Sadly, this isn't the first time something like this has happened. Followers of internet lore are surely familiar with Brandon "I told u I was hardcore" Vedas, who overdosed on drugs live on a webcam after having given his personal information out to the viewers in case something went wrong. All were too afraid to get in trouble to call the authorities. There's definitely something about being on the internet that makes you feel cut off from and not responsible for the people you're dealing with (see: YouTube commenters), but when you're watching a real, live human on video doing something obviously damaging to themselves, it's completely inexcusable to do nothing. And to egg them on, well, that's something those people will have to deal with on their own. A sad story all around. |

On Monday, my daughtere came home talking about one of her friends was telling everyone that she "wouldn't be around on Wednesday" and my daughter was upset because she thought the girl was going to run away and I was thinking maybe she plans on harming herself (she's turned very dark this year); so I called the girls mother to tell her what I had heard. I felt like if this girl had done anything on Wednesday and I had heard about it and done nothing, I would feel like complete shyt. Turns out that this girl has been looking for attention and "acting out" and if I'm hones, I feel a little foolish for being a bit alarmist. This is why it's difficult for me to understand that nowadays people would watch this, egg it on, not call someone, etc. And I do understand that a lot of folks might have thought it was "fake", but NO ONE thought differently? Sign of the Times I suppose. Sad!

You did the absolute right thing. With this culture of violence and uncaring people are lulled into this sense that these kinds of things are normal. Folks aren't alarmed when these types of things happen. It's scary because there's no way of knowing what makes people tick. God knows, with the economy how it is, than add family life's pressures, job pressures, we're going to see more and more of it. We have to take it serious. Those people encouraging it were mean, even in jest there are some things you shouldn't do. You never know when you are really dealing with someone truly disturbed.

That is basically what I explained to my daughter. I told her that no matter what, you should take something like that serious, because you never know. For years people have been saying that we as a society are becoming more and more desensitized, and I guess when things like this happen, it proves that point.

Hey Holla --- I'd do the same thing again! I really have a soft spot for kids and especially nowadays because there is so much being thrown their way. I get amazed at some of the things that my 12 year old (8th grade) comes home telling me about. And not being funny, parents for the most part, seem to be so tuned out. I don't think they mean to be, I just think that there isn't a whole lot of "talking" going on. This particular kid, "talks" with me all the time, so I felt obligated, but even if it was a kid that my daughter knew casually, I probably still would have called the school or something to alert them to it.

You did the right thing! Hell, I called the police on the guys that were cleaning out a foreclosure down the street from me because they looked suspicious and I couldn't get in touch with the realtor who has the home listed. I didn't feel bad for a second when it turned out they were legit because ya never know. I had a talk with the girl who lived next door to me years ago when she was 15 because she was having a boy over when her mother wasn't home and I knew her mom wouldn't approve. My husband was saying "mind your own business" and I told him that if that girl ended up in trouble I would never forgive myself. The boy stopped coming over and she is now married with 3 kids and a wonderful young lady!

Here's
a story nobody likes to see. 19-year-old Abraham K. Biggs overdosed on
pills on a live webcam stream before hundreds of people on Wednesday
night, all while commenters on Justin.tv and bodybuilding.com
encouraged him, apparently thinking it was some kind of joke. He lay
passed out on his webcam for hours until he appeared to stop breathing,
at which point the people watching realized it was no joke.
