RACISM: BEY-JAY MAG COVERS(72)
RACISM BLAMED FOR LACK OF BEY-JAY MAG COVERS: Plus, PETA sends Beyonce a peace offering; Rihanna claims she didn't now about wedding.April 14, 2008
*Of the big five celebrity glossies out midweek, only Us Weekly put news of Beyonce and Jay-Z's wedding on the cover. The others chose instead to feature Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston, notes New York Daily News columnist Ben Widdicombe. He says one top editor blames the lack of attention on the notion that "African-Americans don't sell covers." "None of the magazines landed an exclusive on wedding pictures, which would have made the story bigger," Widdicombe quoted of one tabloid insider, justifying why Beyoncé was relegated to a small cover box on his magazine. But even wedding photos make less money for black stars, another source stated. "Eva Longoria can get $1 million for wedding photos, but without the expectation of cover sales, Beyoncé might have gotten as little as $250,000 if she had sold hers," says a top editor. Magazine publisher and black gossip pioneer Flo Anthony responds: "That sounds to me a very racist statement. Beyoncé is one of the biggest stars in the world, much bigger than Eva Longoria." Another tabloid source says: "We have a saying, 'Only Oprah.' Oprah is the only black celebrity big enough to put on our cover." But Us Weekly editor in chief Janice Min, the only non-Caucasian to helm a top celebrity magazine, told the columnist: "Janet Jackson has been on our cover twice, for two of our best-selling issues we've ever had." She acknowledges there is a perception in her industry that black stars don't sell covers, but adds: "Typically, you will hear that discussion among a group of all-white editors." Meanwhile, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has had their issues with Beyonce for choosing to wear furs. But the animal rights group, who once accosted her with video footage of slaughtered animals, has reportedly forgiven the artist and actually sent her a wedding gift. In a press release, PETA announced they've decided to call a truce after noting that she hasn't worn animal skin all winter. Among the gifts at her recent wedding was a peace offering from the organization, along with a note. “From all of us at PETA, we wish you much happiness in your life together," the message read. "Please accept this faux-fur throw with many good wishes and a hope from us that together, you’ll be a fur-free couple!” In a statement, PETA Senior VP Lisa Lange called Beyonce “a real ‘dreamgirl’ for fur-bearing animals." In other wedding news, Rihanna said she had no idea that her former boss at Def Jam had exchanged vows with Beyonce last week. "I didn't know!" she told People at the Escada Moon Sparkle/Island Def Jam benefit for her Believe Foundation and DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center. "No one knew!" |

Hi Befree :)
Ma'am - you know the deal.....when there are 2 Black folks showing love - mass media does not find it newsworthy to show Black love. On the other hand - if they were strung out on drugs, or acting like a minstrel - they'd have a reality show by now. We have seen this already.... I ain't naming names............... And to say "I did not know...." Come on, The POPE knew this.

Reality #1, the fact that a black man is marrying a black woman should make every news outlet in america.....but your comments are correct...unless its a negative, white america will keep up hidden in a few pages.
But the bullshtttt that we don't buy mags..I am an avid People Mag. reader, well I was until they overwhelmed me with this Britney mess, than I cancelled my prescription...couldn't take anymore!! But just for the record....Bey has saturated the tv media with coverage, thats proboally why the interest has fallen...God forbid you see us in commercials tooo. |
|
What's more likely to be in the tabloids:
or
White people buying Enquirer and Globe don't want to see positivity, whether it's a black celebrity or a white celebrity. And they damn sure don't want to see Jay-Z and Beyonce getting married unless:
|
|
bey and jay didn't publicise the wedding, didn't sell the wedding pics and still haven't confirmed they are married .... so what was there to cover? obviously there is racism in the media ... but to claim that beyonce is not getting enough attention in the mags is ridiculous. it's a nice change of pace for beyonce and jay z to seep something private and personal. too many celebs are selling their baby's pic and wedding exclusives to the tabloid media ... finally here's a family that didn't sell out to the media. omg omg omg did i just say something nice aboout bey??? |
|
Why would racism be a factor in Bey and Jays wedding they wanted there wedding private and thats what they got so why should racism be blame for that. Frankly I am sick of black entertainers begging for exceptence from white people bey and Jay needs to go sit down some where from the public eye and enjoy married life and lay low for a while I have had enough of these reality marriages here today gone tomorrow. Frankly these magazines now adays is to expensive to purchase just a quick glance in the supermarket and call it aday for me . |
|
I agree with you. I don't know why folks thought they were gonna sell their wedding photos. These 2 people have been private since day 1. There is no way anyone outside of family will ever see those pictures...well except for the person developing them. And I'm sure they made the company sign something to keep their mouths shut.
Wedding location......aboard Carnival Cruises Triumph May 24, 2008 in Miami!

hey Ma' (((Ma'))) I miss the old, dearly departed Pope - he LOOKED like a Pope..........this new guy looks like a college science teacher I wished the Pope's last name was Sicola...then we would have a..............(drum roll) Pope Sicola (LOL) a new drink (LOL) Edited by John_Public on April 14, 2008 03:41:48 PM

Hmm, 1) I don't know if jay or bee would see that as a bad thing since they wanted to keep the wedding private anyway. 2) There weren't any good shots of anyone to make the wedding a coverstory.. 3) The part about her being paid less than eva longwhoria for wedding pics could be seen as racist(unless it's the truth), but some celebs the public just have no interest in as opposed to others for no appearant reason. Christina A and Nicole Ritchie baby pics for example.

The highly favored light-skinnded one shalt never suffer racism. The Golden Child hast requested privacy and twas granted. LMAOOOOOOOOOOO I'm agape that folks are crying racism b/c the media isn't hounding "black people's best offering to the white man" for wedding exclusives. She wanted privacy. She got it. Maybe they feel tabloids should give her the same respect they give "white man's best offering to the world" Britney Spears and hound her anyway.lol Edited by Baby_blue2003 on April 14, 2008 03:59:52 PM

Beyonce' has been on the cover of hundreds of magazines; some even twice or more. They wanted their business private and they did all they could to keep it private. |

First of all, Bey and Jay did everything in there power to keep their maybe so/ maybe not nuptials out of the public. They have never even acknowledge a relationship much less confirm a wedding. So, what is the press to do? Make up stories using animation? They don't want y'all in their private life. They only want y'all in stores buying cds or at arenas buying concert tickets. Other than that, they don't want you in their lives. They keep their info private and hire tons of security to keep you away. Wake up, people! Their love and respect for you their fans doesn't balance the fanatic/stalking love some of you have for them. You are dollars and cents, not friends. Get the message and move on. There is no conspiracy.
