American Gangster was a great movie...even though I have to admit I kept analyzing it for certain 'dramatizations' that conflicted how things really went down, according to the written accounts of Frank Lucas. Once I got over that - I was able to enjoy the movie for its greatness. Can't wait for the story of nicky barnes a.k.a. the real nino brown to come out. What did U think about the final scene, with Frank walking out to a new 'changed' world...to the sounds of Public Enemy's Can't Trust It? Powerful, wasn't it?! |

When ever they do a "true to life" movie they always add or subtract facts to appeal to the viewer and unless your close to the people involved in the "story" you kinda take it for what its portrayed on screen. I thought the movie was good and the cast was great. *Denzel* *Common* Frank Lucas beat the po-po at their own game. After all most cops are crooks, they seek to profit from the very crimes they arrest perps for. Theres not a cop that doesn't have a price. Whats powerful is that Frank Lucas is STILL ALIVE and profiting, even if they killed him today he surpassed what those crooked cops would've ever thought he would. Shoot! Some of us may not live to be 79-80 years old. LOL

Welcome Back Denzel and Congradulations!!! Yes its a True Gangster movie that needed to be told, the only group that can compare to Mr. Frank Lucas now is the Jamacian Posse. They talk like it was the "Coat" that set his dimise in action, when they know this was still racist America and it was who was on his arm that night. They just stumbled into his Millions and after that it was no way they where going to let a Black Man have all that. I believe the CIA and the movie writers didnt want everyone to know that it was Nicky Barnes who help brought him down, so they arrest Nicky two years later to make it look official (like they do all snitches eventually) and put him in "Protected Custody" to this day.

The movie was excellent. No problems there. However, I was really bothered watching a Black man help destroy his community. Not saying that he single handedly turned some of the dope fiends in Harlem into dope fiends, but he had a part in it. That part of the movie bothered me, along with the fact that his 'family' that was down with him are still in jail. He got out early cause he "snitched"... Ironic isn't it...
Oh, and they could have gotten a better actress to portray his wife. |

I'm with you, I was sitting in the theatre thinking the same thing. It was enough of a slap that this black man couldn't find one black sister in all of Harlem and then for her on the movie to be so unattractive was another slap. I hope the beauty queen in real life was at least drop dead georgeous. The reaction of his mother I hope wasn't what we saw in the movie. She all put bent over and kissed the mexican girl's feet....Oh she was P. Rican right? He respected his mother but not other black women enough to find a black wife from Harlem. Denzel made you like the character, but I'm thinking this brother was murdering us and getting rich. But the mob does the same thing. So is it better to be killed by a black man's dope or an Italians or now a Cuban's dope? What we all can agree on is that they went after Frank and set up a whole sting because they hated the fact that a black man was winning at this game. They didn't take down any mobsters and didn't set up a whole task force to take out one of the crime bosses, so why go after the Brother and pay so much money to do it? And then keep it hidden that he was such a criminal genius? I mean using the army to transmit dope? And in 2007 mainstream America is just learning about it? I do believe that he was smart enough to hide more money outside his dog's house....Don't you?

The point about the Mob vs. the black man's dope - EXCELLENT point! I was watching the movie thinking if this had been any other ganster move I would have been rooting for the 'bad' guy. I am not ignorant to the streets, but I honestly, for all these years, thought it was the 'man' that brought drugs into harlem, then to find out it was one of us?? That was kind of messed up. So out of one side of my face I was rooting for the cops, out the other side I was rooting for the 'bad' guy. Also, keep in mind, this story is roughly 85% fiction. I would tell you who actually set him up, but then I would ruin the movie.. (sorry)
Another question - why is it that we (black folks) now have a problem with b's and hoes' in rap music, but wanna glorify characters like Frank Lucas? Come on... isn't that backwards? I'm just saying... |

You are sooo funny about the mother's reaction. But are RIGHT. Why was she like 'you sho is an angel' like really. I was soo put off by that! I was yelling at the t.v. 'why is she an angel, cause she is Puerto Rican with long hair'. Cause the way she was all up on that chick made you think is she for real??

I guess I need to read the book. I would like to know what's really going on? I'd also like to know why his mama was going to church and living off dirty blood money? He held her in such high regards but you see his daddy wasn't mentioned in the movie. I might be wrong but I kept thinking, is she some Southern Whore who had all those kids like a dog and then when she got old became a Saint? I'm just keeping it real, I know a whole lot of sisters who grew up with my younger aunts and uncles who were whores and now that they're run out they're nice grandparents. He murdered so many of us with drugs because she didn't raise him to be s-it, because she probably wasn't sh-t. I mean what mother would live off that dirty money? My mama wouldn't because some of my drug dealing cousins have offered to pay her to make crafts for them and she won't take their money.

I must say that American Ganster was ganster, it was better than what I thought it would be and I also that it was worth watching for real. I am not a big Denzel fan but there are a few movies that I must give him credit for and this is one of them he did the damn thing. I must say that me and my husband really liked it. We spent our last money to see what Denzel had to give to us and we seen it and it was worth it for real. But I think what I liked the most was that he was ganster but not thugged out. He was just straight ganster.... |

King David did in the name of God.... and his name has lived forever........... Mr. Bush is doing it today and public thinks he's doing the world a just cause.... A mother that never had anything AND WAS BLIND to fact of what Frank was doing. I just hope that Our youth of today give up "their Dope dealing ways because the Court system is numbing the with lots years in Prison. "Note".................... I hope this wasn't another training flim for our people in the world..... BLOOD MONEY SPENDS AS WELL AS Honest money, sad to say but it's true.

I HAD THE SAME PROB. YOU HAD, THIS MAN HAS ALREADY BLED A COMMUNITY OF HIS OWN PEOPLE DRY, WHY SHOULD THE BLACK COMMUNITY CONTINUE TO BE PIMPED BY HIM? NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN HE'S A SICK OLD MAN, B.S. HE'S STILL A THUG, JUST A HAS BEEN MAN.HE IS SUFFERING FROM A LARGE DOSE OF GODS JUSTICE SYSTEM. AND HOW CAN HE AND THE MAN WHO SO-CALLED BROUGHT HIM DOWN GET SO CHUMMY HMMMMMMMMM. GODFATHER ?,THAT A PLAY ON WORDS IF I EVER HEARD ONE. |
|
You are soo right..I completely agree. Isn't it funny how a villian is now a hero? and aren't we sending the wrong message to our kids? As if we don't have enough young black men in prison already. And I read that they are coming out with a movie based on Nicky Barne's life..
Oh and speaking of pimping the community - he (Frank Lucas) is now developing a line of clothing based off of American gangster.. As much as I like watching Denzel I was kind of disappointed that he took this role. What did we learn from this character (Frank Lucas) - not to bury 2.5 mil under a dog house?? |
