The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

LL Cool J

If you haven't guessed it, LL Cool J said his days of recording with Def Jam are numbered. He owes the company one more LP, then it's a wrap. He said Jay-Z's presidency is the main reason he doesn't want to come back.

"How am I gonna re-sign with competition? I'm not a idiot," LL said of his label boss. "I can't depend on that man to promote my record while he's somewhere writing rhymes. ... I'm LL Cool J. I ain't doing that, B."

LL said he hasn't decided what his next home may be, but he joked that he might even come back to Def Jam for the right paper. "I would rock with Def Jam if they wrote a big enough check," he said before breaking out into his trademark hearty laughter. "Me and Jay would be on that yacht like, 'Hov! Hov! Write that check, homie.' "

Uncle L's LP, as you might have heard, is being executive produced by 50 Cent, and LL said it will live up to the hype.

"I'm absolutely going to pulverize these cats," he said, still chuckling. "It's going to be hysterical. It's like a Mama Said Knock You Out type of record or Mr. Smith type of record. It's a very good record. My last three records were R&B and more of me getting kinda into the emotional side of what I do. This is the aggressive side. Just ego. I'm getting into the party free, regardless. We unlocking the back door and sneaking 50 people in. This album, I'mma do a little street-corner joint. Smack them around, turn 'em upside down and shake the change out their pockets."

LL said 50 reminds him of himself. "My man has a great sensibility. He knows what I like," he said. "We're from Queens. We're seven years apart in age. He knows what I'm into. We come from the same experience, so the music reflects that. And let's face it, 50 reminds me of a place I was in awhile ago. I have been running around on tours. I have been in the suites, and I haven't been on the blocks smelling like Guinness lately. It's fun to work with somebody who rekindles those flames and makes me hungry again. It's definitely working."

Now I know I'm no Einstein but if he doesn't wanna sign with Def Jam because Jay's "competition" and "writing rhymes"..then what would 50 be if he decided to jump ship to G-Unit..."competition", no?

Bless his lil heart

One thing is for certain...it's a sad day when LEGENDS have to pair up with SCRAPS in order to get some shine.

LL has been in the industry for so long that he should have his OWN record label.  He shouldn't be looking for any younger artist to sign HIS paycheck.  He should be doing the signing!

Old rappers never die, they just keep putting out subpar material.

LL needs to hang it up.  His place in rap history is secure, but he just needs to face facts and realize that his time has come and gone.  He's had 20yrs of success...a long and great career.  He needs to focus on Hollywood and leave hip hop to the young cats.

Bruh...you're almost 40 and you haven't lived in the hood for at least the past 20yrs.  You don't have anything to say that people can relate to.

Why can't Todd just bow out gracefully?  Geeeesh, I guess that would be asking far too much from him. SMH!

LL is the only guy I know that can do a I'm Bad type of song and a I'm That Type of Guy song on the same album and make you believe both

Do not ask the Lord to guide your footsteps, if you are not willing to move your feet.

there should be a type of AARP clause

in a rappers contract

when you hit age 30 go behind the scenes cause it looks foolish

for an older man to be rapping about the same type of

stuff a 20 something rapper is. Not to mention those petty beefs

To be honest - LL does not have to say a word.  Just stand there...licking his lips..shirtless....

Okay - back on topic....LL is not the only one complaining, is he?  I thought I read an article of some other folks who were unhappy with Jay-Z 's heading the label.  But another poster said it best - LL should have his own label, instead of pledging alligiance to Def-Jam.  Yes - it molded him into who he is today....but legends leave labels.  Even Stevie Wonder left Motown - you know??

Old rappers never die, they just keep putting out subpar material.

Now this is INDEED the truth.  But let them (DMX, Method Man, LL) tell it the reason they don't sell is because Jay-Z is the head of the label.

I think LL is still sexy and I love him as a rapper but maybe he should retire. First of all, I think that it's a good thing in entertainment for folks to go out (retire) on a high note. Leave us fans wanting more of you and remembering you as always being on top of the game. And secondly, I heard/read a guy say this: "if you're old enough to have kids graduating from high school, you don't need to be rapping." The guy was referring to someone else but this can apply to LL. Go out on top, leave us wanting more, and know when your time has passed.

I'm an LL fan, but damn -- he sounded mighty silly in that article.

LL is not too much older than me, so I feel I can say he should sit his old ass down. Rappers 30 and above ain't got nothing to say to these young folks today - not without looking a fool trying to appear young.

Stick with the movies James.

Now, part of me looks at the wall-to-wall coverage of Jay's album got.  The Hangar Tour, the commercials, the NBA spots, etc.  I'm wondering if Jay could have done a little more to at least get the word out that The Roots, LL, and Meth put out albums.  And at least two of them (Meth and the Roots) weren't half-bad.

So while I think these artists are putting too much blame on one man for their failures, Jay doesn't help absolve himself when I see tons of internet ads for Kingdom Come.

At 34, I feel like I'm in rap purgatory...I can't relate to what's going on with Jeezy, T.I, Joc, Dro, etc and I'm not interested in what's going on with Meth, X, or LL.

I agree on some level but I wonder if those opportunities are even available for The Roots and Method Man.  Think about it, is Budweiser really tryna link themselves to either of those albums?  Jay already has NBA ties so that deal is mutally beneficial.

You mean you dont bounce right and left and let your shoulder lean????  You don't let your chain hang low???  You don't just get the urge to just walk it out?????  I know when you do well at a meeting at work you scream out BAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLIN.

I'm sure it'll be pretty good...LL has a history of putting out a great album after a suck one...

And...where is it written that an MC has to retire once he/she reaches 30? Thats CRAZY....But thats the problem with hip hop...What, just because you came out 10, 15 years ago that makes you no good any more? Why cant hip hop artists GROW...like any OTHER genre of music...Can you imagine if somebody said "no rock and roll after age 30"? NEVER GONNA HAPPEN....

I blame "urban" radio, MTV, BET etc, etc....

LMBAO @ "I know when you do well at a meeting at work you scream out BAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLIN."

Yeah...I do that all the time.  They just treat me like "that silly negro Tinman" and go on about their business.

LL needs to sit in his Hover Round, throw his knit afghan over his lap and roll on.
