BPRW) EXCLUSIVE: JENNIFER HOLLIDAY SAYS SHE CREATED ROLE IN DREAMGIRLS AND DOESNT WANT TO BE FORGOTTEN
What the public doesn't understand is that I actually created my role. I wasn't a girl-for-hire where someone said, Heres the script and here's the songs--your job sta

Original "Dreamgirl" Jennifer Holliday is annoyed she wasn't asked to reprise her role in the film version, almost 25 years after she won a Tony for playing Effie White on Broadway. "For six months, they used my voice on the trailer," she complains to "Inside Edition" tonight. "What I wasn't prepared for was not to even be asked to do a cameo of some sort." Jennifer Hudson will play White in the upcoming movie, next to Beyoncé Knowles.

Well I know they werent going to ask her to reprise the role, she said it herself she was 21 when the show began. Obviously they wanted someone also around that age for the movie, but they could have at least offered her a cameo.

I was wondering when we would hear something from Miss Holiday.

Thanks for posting!

I truly can understand where Jennifer Holliday is coming from.  I saw the play, in fact, a family member of mine was in the original cast and I know that Jennifer's heart and soul went into that production.  If And I Am Telling You is the showstopper it is, it's because Jennifer Holliday made it such.  She interpreted the song and made if far more than it was written.  She owns that song! She gave Jennifer Hudson something to work with. They could have given her and the other original Dreamgirls cameos. I guess people don't think like that anymore.

Jennifer Holliday is a favorite of many of us who saw the play or who have the soundtrack.  Many of the old school music stations play AIATY on the radio and people still love it.

Kudos and much love to you Jennifer Holliday.

I know this movie is probably bringing a resurgence of emotion for Ms. Holliday because it was the best and worst of times for her, I agree they should have had a cameo for all of them in the new movie.  I just watched the youtube clip of the original Dreamgirls and I could tell they were experiencing something they'd never forget, you could tell the moment was magical.

Well, there is the answer to all her questions right there. She's just too old to play Effie. But like Babyboi said a cameo would have been nice.

"What I wasn't prepared for was not to even be asked to do a cameo of some sort."   she CANNOT be serious!!!!  why in the hell would they ask her to reprise her role or do a cameo when it's been 25 damn years since she was in the original?  girlfriend needs to build a bridge and get over that shit!!  smdh

Why shouldn't the original 3 dreamgirls have been asked to do cameos.  Loretta Divine is the only one who was asked.  I think it is a way of paying tribute to the reason there is even a Dreamgirls movie to make...

**************************

Agreed! They weren't obligated but AS A TRIBUTE to Jennifer and her Tony-winning role, a nice little cameo (one that was a like a wink to the audience) would've been really nice.
What is weird about this is that Loretta Devine ,who payed the orginal Lorell, has a cameo as a lounge singer in the new movie. I guess she happens to get the most work out of all of them. Holliday sounds like a Diva and maybe she has a reputation for being difficult.  Maybe Loretta Devine was humble enough to reach out to the director and say she wanted to appear in it. Jennifer could have made that call.

OMG!! I'M GLAD YOU POSTED THIS. TO ME.. EFFIE WILL ALWAYS BE JENNIFER HOLIDAY. I DON'T CARE WHO COMES ALONG TO PLAY THE CHRACTER..JENNIFER...LIKE SHE SAID...MADE THAT ROLE...I'M  GLAD FOR JENNIFER HUDSON AFTER GOING THROUGH THE WHOLE AMERICAN IDOL EXPERIENCE..BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE SHOWED RESPECT TO THE ONES WHO LAID THE FOUNDATION..AND NOT TO DO SO IS AN INSULT!!! I DON'T CARE ABOUT EDDIE BESASHAY, OR JAMIE, ....THEY HAVE THIER SHINE ALREADY. I DO WANT ANIKA AND JENNIFER HUDSON TO GET THEIR SHINE ON!!  I DON'T LIKE THAT EBONY MAGAZINE GAVE BESHAY PROPS ON BRINGING  DREAMGIRLS TO THE SILVER SCREEN..PUHLEESE... DREAMGIRLS IS A COLLECTIVE EFFORT.. NO ONE PERSON CAN SELL THAT MOVIE. BUT IT IS ALL BECAUSE OF JENNIFER HOLIDAY'S SONG: AND I AM TELLING YOU...THAT DROVE PEOPLE TO BROADWAY AND MADE IT SUCH A PHENOMENAL HIT...AND IT IS STILL BECAUSE OF THAT SONG THAT PEOPLE EVEN CARE TO SEE THIS MOVIE (JENNIFER HUDSON AS EFFIE)  I DON'T BUY INTO HYPE AND I WILL WAIT TO SEE THE PROMOTION.. IF THEY ARE STILL JUST PROMOTING BEBE I WILL NOT WASTE MY TIME OR MY HARD EARNED MONEY TO SUPPORT IT, DREAMGIRLS WILL ALWAYS BE SHERYL LEE RALPH..JENNIFER HOLIDAY..AND LORETTA DEVINE. PERIOD!! YOU CAN'T DUPLICATE THAT MAGIC AGAIN ...NO MATTER WHO YOU PUT IN THE ROLES. THAT WAS A ONE TIME DEAL. YOU CAN ONLY HOPE IT HAS A NEW GENERATION WAVE.. AND AN AUDIENCE TO RESPECT THE MAGIC THAT WAS CREATED BACK THEN.. MOST OF THE "AUDIENCE " WILL PROBABLY BE THOSE WHO SAW THE STAGE PLAY IN THE 80'S LIKE MYSELF. THEY BETTER BRING IT  RIGHT... OR  CANCEL THE SHISH!!!!!!

Maybe Loretta Devine was humble enough to reach out to the director and say she wanted to appear in it. Jennifer could have made that call.

That's highly likely and I agree about Jennifer. Thanks for the info. I had no idea that Loretta had a cameo.

Is she still that miserable about the lack of publicty back in her day? Why would they have asked her old ass to stand next to B. in this movie? She really is in a mental fog. She needs to move on into the next phase of her life and let that go. She needs to let the young people carry the torch. *smh* ... the hell is wrong with her?

I also think Loretta Divine appears to have had a more successful career these past few years and is more known to younger audiences.  She's played in quite a few movies/TV roles.

Yes, Loretta Divine has had more success, but die-hard fans of Dreamgirls obviously love the originals and it would've been nice.  If nothing else, a lot of folks know about Jennifer Holiday's song.  I have been hearing about her song for years, yet I didn't know much about the play...  A lot of folks in Hollywood are out of touch.

Honestly, I think they should be giving the original cast what is due to them.

They created a masterpiece worth talking about so many years later.

They should have invited them all to the first screening and did press on them with the current cast. I'm not saying they had to give them all the shine, but in the least a lot of respect.

Yes I think that they should have invited them all to a screening however I do think that one original 'Dreamgirl' cameo in the movie is quite enough. I like Jennifer Holiday and I believe everything she said about molding the 'Effie' characater but her time has passed and she needs to let the younguns have their shine. In the article she talks about trying to commit suicide and nobody writing about it, sounds to me like just wants some attention. If she really wanted to go to a screening I am sure she could have made some calls and got that arranged.
ROTFLMAOOOOOOOOOOO....

Why would they have asked her old ass to stand next to B.

I'M ACTUALLY SHOCKED THEY DIDN'T ASK ALL OF THE ORIGINAL DREAMGIRLS TO BE IN THE MOVIE... I'VE NEVER SEEN THE PLAY & I HADN'T HEARD TOO MUCH ABOUT IT UNTIL BUZZ ABOUT THE MOVIE STARTED.... I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE THEM!  THEY SHOULD HAVE OFFERED THEM CAMEOS...
