Big Black Woman a stereotype?(201)
| This message has been deleted |

I have been saying this for the longest in particulalry when it comes to darkskin black women in hollywood they always seem to be overweight and usually older. I have always wonder why is this why do hollywood love to promote that black women are all just big and fat. Especailly when you look at older movies a lot of the black women (espicailly darker ones) were usually always big fat and sassy. Hollywood is so dam manipulative they love to portray black women as something they consider negative.

To some, the freer use of overweight black women in comic situations suggests a welcome change that reflects a broader acceptability of blacks in the media. But others find the recurring use of the image a return to a disturbing past. Exactly! Also, if it's not showing us as big fat women, it;'s showing us as the "hoochie mama" There is an ad for I-Pod, where this stupid white man is on a bus, and he says to this black girl who is standing on the bus, "Dance" and she starts dancing, sticking her ass out, it burns me everytime I see it, she has a pole, like a stripper, and it's very disrepectful. |

I guess I say older because they are always as you say comforting and mammylike. They always seems to be a caregiver or some sort and they just seem like life is already over for them so that's why to me they seem older. And when I say as something they see as negative I mean that want to make sure white women don't feel threatened. White folks look down on fat women and they probably like black women fat to make sure thier white sons are not lusting over them which they probably do anyways. |

This image has always been found to be acceptable-and it isn't. But the funny thing is that we as Black people are the biggest perpetrators of that stereotype as well. Queen Latifah often is forced to play that type of role in films. Countess Vaughn, Monique, Natalie Desselle, Mabel King, and others often had to do the same just to work regularly. MensaOne |

You're right. Black people eat that shit up when it's black people producing those images. But when it's white people putting it out there we have a problem with it. Kinda like the n word. I don't know how I feel about it. I don't think it's necessarily hypocrisy. Every group of people has that attitude. Jews are often self depreciating in their humor, but do not appreciate others making fun of Jewishness. It was an interesting article nonetheless.

I hate that commercial. What he actually says is "You, shake your junk." And then that ghetto ass looking woman starts shaking her fat sloppy ass. That commercial pisses me off. But the example they used of that Twix commercial, I didn't see racial overtones in that one. I think that plays more on female stereotypes than black stereotypes. That commercial could have easily worked the same way with a white couple.

I agree with you on the Twix commercial (not racial) Though the black girl was thick and shaply, I just could not imagine a white couple in that commercial (It would no have been as cute or funny) Most thick or heavy white women are no where near sexy or shaply. |

Thank you for that interesting article. I had noticed myself that in ads both print and tv, there is always a very large black woman if there is a black woman at all. I found this odd, since very few overweight white women can find work in commercials. I , like most black people have hesitated to say anything about this, but I definitely see a pattern.

I'm reading this and I'm shocked at folks buying into this shyt. I see different types of black women in movies. This article seems to want to point out a few instances and make like it's a epidemic. Black people come in all different shapes, sizes, shades and temperments. This is some bullshyt to try rile folks up. Who the hell is Jeremy Peters anyway?
