Thank you very much.

I think his videos hurt his credibility in raising awareness for the disease. It's kind of like.. would you go to a benefit for AIDS given by 2 Live Crew?? How much are we really going to listen and you are sitting there degrading women that look like your mama the very next day? Some of the same reasons I don't rush home to watch videos like I used to.. you get tired of seeing the same thing "over and over again"..LOL

And yep... Spelman just wanted to "TALK" to him about it and he declined...and THAT is where it blew up.

GREAT POST!!!! The 2 Live Crew analogy was on point!!!

I guess that's relative to which issue you find most important.  I mean this man knew his sister was just as sick when he was degrading people.  Was he thinking about this when he was too big of a man to apologize?  Sorry I don't agree that the sisters were in the wrong.

You might not be aware but Nelly isn't the only person raising awareness on bone marrow.

Yes there are professionals at the Red Cross that get paid to deliver this message.  I may be one of the few people that don't look to Nelly for knowledge.

My heart goes out to Nelly and his family!

I know this is off the subject, but is that your husband in the crop picture with you? Y’all make a wonderful duo!

I’m going to pretend “I did not wake up in the CRYING game".

exactly, well said, I feel sorry for his sister and my condolences go out to his family but in regard to the way he depicts blk women in videos and the way blk women allow themselves to be depicted, is a whole different issue, I think SPELLMAN WAS RIGHT IN THEIR DECISION

At least he has exerted some effort to raise awareness. Do you know how many rappers and entertainers who stand for nothing past making millions of dollars?  I ,also agree that women are exploited in these videos daily. To really make a difference, why not find these women who let themselves be exploited and build up their self-esteem and self-confidence so they will know  their self-respect means more than any amount of money?

We need to stop blaming entertainers for exploiting women who are happy about being exploited. Adults need to be responsible for their own actions, not the actions of others.

I have to come to the defense of this Nelly controversay.  I am born and raised in St. Louis and I am presently doing work with Jes Us 4 Jackie, getting more African Americans aware of saving the lives of one another.  We were called early this morning with this rather shocking news.  She had been in the hospital for awhile this time around when the cancer came back.

But in Nelly's defense!  I have to say that he does more in the community that anyone will ever know.  The Tip Drill video is apart of his job.  Not defending the vulgar behavior of the young women in the video because they have just as much responsibility in the making the video what it is!  Making these videos is apart of his job!  That has nothing to do with him taking action in uplifting the community that is in need of his help !

If we are really concerned about what the children view and how these videos are degrading women, holding these "video hoes" accountable for their actions first will make a difference.  We are fighting the wrong fight.  We need to teach our young ladies that it is more to life than fame, fortune, quick money and being recognized!  All of these sisters in these videos are fully aware of what they are doing, wearing and what they are going to look like when the video is done.  They need to take responsibility FIRST!!  Or else there would not be any Tip Drill videos!

As for those Spelman College sisters, get off the high horse!!  Just because you go to Spelman College does not mean that you would not get stricken with a deadly disease as Jackie.  Spelman College sisters choose your battles wisely!

It was never about Tip Drill or "video hoes"  Spelman lost sight of the cause!  The fight is to make black people aware of something as serious as cancer that we can make a difference and save the lives our people.  We have the power, we need to use wisely!

No one is "blaming" Nelly for anything.. Spelman wanted "dialouge"...This is not the first time that Spelman has had issues with people making requests. Back in 1989 I did my  Work Study in Publications and Public relations and believe me, students and/or faculty had issues with a number of different things that were requested and didn't make the papers...

I think if a bunch of video hoes wanted to do a "fashion show"  on Spelman's campus to raise money and gifts for "Toys for Tots" they would get the same reception.

For those who think Spelman is on a "high horse"....So, what...You have no idea what grants through NIH and other health initiatives through the National Medical Association (that is the BLACK ONE) are being implemented across all  HBCU campuses..

Just like people were being maimed and disabled "before" Chris Reeves became hurt and before Micheal J. Fox was stricken with Parkinsons, there will be those organizations that have been fighting for YEARS to overcome these types of maladies. There have been a number of fouundations started in the name of a "celebrity" that fold after a few years when that celebrity is no longer popular or involved in any meaningful way. That is why it is important to support  longstanding organizations like the RED CROSS....

Spelman did not cancel the bone marrow drive...Nelly did, because he wasn't tryin' to hear what they had to say...they just requested a dialogue with him...

Anyway, my condolences go out to him and his family,....hopefully her death will not be in vain and this will bring awareness to the bone marrow disease and the need for more black donors, and also help him make some changes in his life...

on another note, alot of artists with derogatory messages in their music and videos need to realize that you can still make a good video and music with a good beat without all the negative stuff...

It's as unfair to put the onus on these colleges as it is to put it on Nelly for the self-esteem of black girls. I think everyone here knows that the Spelman girls could have had a better, more productive discussion if they looked at the person sitting next to them in class before the guy on stage or tv, because it starts there.  Nelly wasn't the first and he won't be the last, especially if young women continue to participate. If you've really got a problem with what the man is doing then don't support it. Don't show up for the casting calls for video girls, despite the good money. Don't dance when the song comes on in the club, despite the catchy beat. Don't go to the concert when it comes thru your town, despite the great show.  But DO take responsibility for your own actions, because regardless of the media inundation, the choice is ultimaltely yours.

I'm not a child, I'm a grown man, and not a Nelly fan -- but I liked the Tip Drill video.  But would I let my child watch it? Hell no! And if they did, it's my fault, because it's my responsibility to be THEIR sensor -- not Nelly's.

But may the man's sister rest in peace, if she has indeed passed on.

I'm sorry dear, I disagree. Spelman is full of these types of women. Just go to one of the popular strip clubs in Atlanta or pick up one of the escort catalogs.I guarantee they are full of lost college students who feel they have no other choice. Why don't they start an awareness on their own campus first to discuss what is and is not acceptable among young black women instead of sweeping their indiscretions under the rug? I'm from the South and what those sisters are doing is called "the pot calling the kettle black". I respect your opinion, however, I feel it is misguided. Some of our less fortunate brothers and sisters know nothing about the Red Cross. I don't care who raises awareness and what organization folds after a couple of years, at least the initial effort was there. Which is something a lot of us can't say.

Well, we will have to just disagree. I do care who brings awareness. There were Klan and Neo-Nazis and other organizations expressing their support of  birth control for Black people.

Show me a college were EVERYBODY is the same and thinks the same and acts the same.??????

People who are informed and are committed to issues aren't swayed by someone just because they are a "celebrity"...actually, when a celebrity does take it upon himself to  start a foundation, it takes  MONEY AWAY from the more established orgranizations who get the money, resources and research to the people and researchers who need it...

Again, we disagree......I am not  misguided...I am informed as I have been involved with Public Health for over 10 years...I respect you opinion, it is just not mine.

Sorry to hear about Nelly's loss.

I agree with you on the church thing. They would have called him out, but they still would have helped him raise awareness.

Show me a college were EVERYBODY is the same and thinks the same and acts the same.??????

That is virtually impossible dear, which helps reiterate my point once again. If Spelman were to counsel the very students who are participating in this derogatory crap. Then, I would applaud them. If they are in school, it shows that they are trying to have a better life. So, why not help redirect them instead of  jumping on someone who has already arrived. It doesn't help. I call this the degree syndrome. A lot of people who have degrees or are pursuing one tend to think their own "ish" don't stank.

On question: What are you doing to help your community??

"People who live in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones or however it goes"

I wanted to post to this but I don't feel like a debate right now so I kept quiet. I totally agree with your entire post. This one statement hit it dead on the nose.

'It was never about Tip Drill or "video hoes"  Spelman lost sight of the cause!'

If Spellman didn't loose sight of the cause, they would have saved that 'Tip Drill' issue for another day. That whole topic about his videos could have been discussed at a different date (it was WAY off topic). Nelly went to Spellman for his sister not for his music or his videos. They got the two mixed up and all in the end, people were more focued on Nelly's job more than the reason he was there. Being an entertainer, people don't know how to distinguish work related issues from personal issues so they mix the two together.

RIP to his sister. Her family is in my prayer :-)

Thanks!
Someone on another board mentioned maybe now Nelly will see reality from another perspective. While he was fighting for his sister's life, he was denigrating every black sister, mother and daughter with his disrespectful videos and lyrics. I have had the occasion to meet Nelly twice and he was extremely rude to me both times for no good reason. One day when the music world has no more use for him he will apologize to sisters for the harm his videos and videos like it have caused. But by then it will be too late.

I am sorry to hear that his sister passed away...but

BUT WHAT? SOMEONE HAS PASSED!  AWAY IS WHERE THIS SHOULD HAVE ENDED!  THIS IS WHY PEOPLE HAVE INDIFFERENT OPINIONS ABOUT SPELMAN BECAUSE YOU HAVE STILL LOST SIGHT OF WHATS IMPORTANT!  NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR THAT!

I AM A MOREHOUSE GRAD AND I REALLY DO BELIEVE THAT THE CAUSE WAS FOR HIS SISTER AND WE ARE ALWAYS SAYING THAT PEOPLE LIKE NELLY DONT DO THIS AND THAT AND THEIR MUSIC IS DEGRADING BLAH BLAH BLAH, THEN WHY WHEN HE DOES TRY TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS PAST IMPORTANT WE JUDGE HIM FIRST? BECAUSE WHAT SOME GIRLS VOLUNTEERED TO BE IN THE VIDEO AND THEY GOT PAID AND SO DID HE?  WHOS CHOICE WAS THAT?  MAYBE INSTEAD OF DEFENDING SPELMAN WE SHOULD JUST ATTEMPT TO FEEL WHAT NELLY IS GOING THROUGH AND LEAVE IT AT THAT?

PEACE-THE KID
