... begin when the Brown vs. the Board of Education was misinterpreted!!... These people sued for better and equal schools for their children... Instead, the kids got bused in to schools where they weren't wanted, harrassed, killed and severely traumatized.... The problem for many whites was that, these African-American students were out performing their kids, eventhough they had poor books and meager school supplies... It really bothered me when people celebrated this case, like we actually won something... This is just my opinion... what do you think?

What happened was this--rather than turn over the money to the black folks to make their schools better, white folks kept control of it.--and integration mad negroes, who think that just being in the presence of white folks is the most wonderful thing in the world, bought it hook line and sinker.

There is no hope.

The decline is a result of the decline of parenting, morals, ethics and being responsible.

I agree that those are factors today, but the initial decline started with desegregation... that's a fact... Look at history....

Correct, but that was then and this is now.....move on and move ahead.

Problem is that what's going on now is a result of the past... Anyway.... I have the right to state my opinion and you have the right not to respond... Good day!

I teach in the inner city. The problem that I see is lack of parental involement. My grandmother was poor had a 6th grade education. She raised 16 children without a husband(who died after the 16th was born). Everyone of them graduated from high school. With a 6th grade education obviously she could not help the 7-12th graders with their homework. Each of my aunts and uncles was encouraged by my grandmother to finish school. That's what we need to day. We need that same concern that all parents express whem baby girl or baby boy goes to that first day of school for the entire time the child is in school.

We can do this. We are great people.

We must refuse to give up!

Hello My name is Richard Houston and I have stumbled on something that I think is changing the way kids think about school, I have a 12 year old son  when he was 7 I told him that if he made the all A's and the principle's list that I would take him out on the town in a Limo. Well he made it and I came to the school to get him in the Limo and we had a ball, so I told the Principle that I would take the next bunch that made the list the first time I took 7 kids, the second time I took 12, the third time I took 17, the forth time I took 22, the fifth time I took 31, and I had to get a big coach to put them all in and I video tape every trip. One day I would love to take the HOLD SCHOOL with Limo's everywere out side the school. The school is Barry Elementary School in Detroit, Michigan they were going to CLOSE the school because of FALLING GRADES until they heard about what  the Principle and I were doing. My son is 12 now and has made the list every time.  I would like to try it with other schools with my own Limo but I don't know where to turn for help.  We just had Dads day at the school and I was very proud to see the big difference in the school and the teachers that teach. (A Father that cares now matter what the cost). Thank You for hearing my story, Richard Houston

Black Schools are declining in the Black Community because the parents don't  UNITE and take an active stand to see to it that the schools are properly staffed and funded.

I supposed if they said they were going to give away free fried chicken or two for one drinks coupons to use at the club on Friday - niggaz would be breaking the doors down to run up there ,but as it is, most schools in the Black Community are nothing but warehouses. I used to belong to a program called Upward Bound. I would go to speak at the inner city High Schools and what I saw was not encouraging and that goes for some of the teachers and a lot of students. Classrooms were out of control and in disarray and many of teachers didn't seem to give a damm. I also have a friend who WAS a K-9 teacher and she said that parents were doing less and less every year and EXPECTING The schools to 'raise' their kids she said after a few years of that most tecahers just say to hell wit it.

I agree....I felt  that way also .
I agree with you.  I am a public school teacher and we can't get parents out for parent/conferences, but, our largest turnout for parent night was with the flier reading "Meal provided and baby sitting."
U are absolutely correct. Parenting and their interest in their childrens education, morals, ethics is very important.  public schools should also reduce their class size and have teachers that are interested in teaching school and get the trouble makers out of school and put them in detention schools, also the government has gotten to involved in how parents chastise their children most of us know the difference between a spanking and child abuse.

I think everyone has made valid points about this issue. I totally agree that parents need to be more involved with their children education in whatever way neccessary. Most importantly, parents need to attend PTA meetings and school board meetings. If the parents don't care about their children's education no one else will. Another thing is the study of black history. Honestly, school can be very boring and meaningless, especially if we are only taught in confinement. Students ,especially minorities need to learn about their history so they can understand that they are not the inferior, stupid beings that we are seen as. And this will also motivate and encourage the desire to learn. Another thing we must consider is that a lot of black schools are in poor communities with low -income students. Some of these students are poor and being poor comes with many unfortunate circumstances, that not only affect them financially, but also effects them in their capacity to learn.

"THE DECLINE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOLS"  ????? WHEN DID SO CALLED AFRICAN AMERICANS OWN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM TO EVEN CALL IT THEIR SCHOOLS. JUST BECAUSE IT'S IN YOUR SO CALLED COMMUNITY WHICH BY THE WAY ISN'T OURS DOESN'T MEAN IT BELONGS TO SO CALLED AFRICAN AMERICANS. I'M CONFOUNDED BY THIS TOPIC. WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM TO OPEN THESE SCHOOLS, WHO'S RUNNING THE SCHOOL SYSTEM, WHO'S TEACHING OUR CHILDREN MORE THEN US WEHN DID IT BECOME OUR SCHOOLS????????????
I agree with your sentiments.. simply put all Americans especially African Americans need to accept responsiblity for our childrens' education. i believe if parents stop making excuses for their childrens' laziness and lack of effort then we will have higher achievement rates.  if parents make education a priority and fashion a secondary maybe our children will champion their futures as they should.
That is a great idea but why does it takes the promise of material tricks and treats to get kids to achieve that is the problem with education today. So what happens when the LIMO rides stop coming? Plus not all of us can provide such a great treat to motivate the children and when it just something simple they don't want it because they can do better for themselves
I totally agree that we lost with integration.  Not only our school, teachers, and standards of excellence, but also our connection to our ancestry and culture.  Bless you for your opinion.  It is gold.
To finda  solution to a problem is to start with an accurate definition.  Your "solution" is like telling a crew in the middle of an ocean with no boat making skills to sail on in a leaky boat and concentrate on their navigation skills.  Unless, of course, you "move on-ers" are busily dedicated to the uplift of our people.  In that case, let us know what your solutions/successes are.

Ignore people like him.  We would never have had liberation struggles or civil rights victories if the critical, individualistic, and self-absorbed youngsters of today were in charge.Continue with your analysis.  Your solutions will grow from a premise of the truth.

Many Blessings

Thank you for your refreshingly positive attitude.
