Proposition 8 or Proposition "H8"? - Open Discussion

Posted Nov 18th 2008 4:26PM by Branden Cobb
Filed under: BlackSpin, Elections, News, Life and Style

Since election night a few weeks ago, the passing of Proposition 8 in California--legislation that bans gay marriage--has become a hot-button issue among blacks, whites, Hispanics, etc... The reason: many Americans believe that freedom for all means the ability to marriage whoever you love, regardless of the gender. Others disagree.

Where do you stand?

Simply put, Black Voices wants to know if you are for or against gay marriage.

Let us hear your voices. Please take the time to vote in our polls and then let your voice be heard in the comment box below or continue the discussion in our message boards.

BV Hot Picks 11.18.08

Posted Nov 18th 2008 3:09PM by Karen Hunter
Filed under: Life and Style, BV Bookshelf

These are our view of the best sellers -- or at least the books we feel should be. Each week on Tuesday BV will release what we feel are the hottest black books of the week. The list is compiled by our staff of experts who have read just about everything out there (not just "black books" either) and came up with this list.

Check out the list, and let us know what you think of our choices.

BV Books Hot Picks 11.18.08

Recipes for the Good Life by Patti Labelle
    Simon & Schuster/Foundary/KHP, $25
'Tis the season to be cooking. And no one prepares a meal quite like Ms. Patti Labelle. She has two best-selling cookbooks -- one down-home, one for healthy eating. This one is a blend of both. This book is for those who want to live the good life. (Many of the recipes feature Patti's new line of pepper and hot sauces).

    Simon & Schuster

    The Soloist by Steve Lopez
    Penguin, $15.00

The movie, starring Jamie Foxx, doesn't come out until March. So you have plenty of time to read the book that inspired it. Re-released in paperback, this is a tale of a man, a classically trained violist, who attended Julliard and somehow ended up homeless on the streets of Los Angeles.

    Penguin Books

Left To Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza
    Hay House, $14.95

Never again? Well, it happened and is still happening. This woman experienced the genocide of her people in Rwanda. This is her first-person account. But in the midst of the surrounding evil, she was able to find and discover God. This book is both depressing and inspirational.

    Hay House

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
    Penguin Group, $14

This run-away best seller just came out in paperback. This is the journey of a fat, nerdy, Dominican boy, who has shades of the main character in Wally Lamb's 'She's Come Undone.' The style, with its lack of quote marks and sudden breaks into Spanish, may take a minute to adjust to, but this is a wondrous, intimate peek into the culture and history of the Dominican Republic. It also won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2008.

    Penguin

    Barack (Nonfiction-Children's) by Jonah Winter
    Harper Collins, $17.99

Today when a black child says that he or she wants to be president of the United States, this is now a very real possibility. This book is a slice of history -- it's the story of a little boy who wanted to be president who grew up to realize that dream. And his name is Barack.

    Collins

Flat Belly Diet! By Liz Vaccariello and Cynthia Sass
    Rodale, $25.95

Okay, Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so get this book early. You can either start on your diet early so that the damage done by Thanksgiving won't be so bad, or wait until after the damage is done. As this book says, a flat belly is about food, not about crunches.

    Rodale Press

The Ten Roads To Riches by Ken Fisher and Lara Hoffmans
    Fisher Investments, $24.95

Recession? Depression? Or opportunity? With the economy in the toilet, now is the time to get some inspiration and make a plan for success during these tough times. So here are ten different paths, and how these people made their millions and billions in very different ways. Maybe one road will be one you can travel.

    Fisher Investments

    Midnight (Fiction) by Sister Souljah
    Atria, $26.95

This is not, I repeat not a sequel or prequel to 'The Coldest Winter Ever' -- at least not in the traditional picking-up-where-we-left-off kind of way. In fact, if you're looking for a book that's even similar, you might be disappointed. But if you have a son or a nephew or a young brother, I urge you to get this book for him as a gift. The main character, Midnight, is an example of what a young man should be -- having a profound love of his mother, respect for the women around him, and respect for self. Now he's not without flaws and drama, but this novel was a refreshing surprise from the "gangster love-story" tag that it bears. Warning: It's 500-plus pages.

Men & Fashion News: Usher, Courtney Crawford, McQueen for Target!

Filed under: Lifestyle, Style and Beauty, Style Spotter, Life and Style

If you haven't noticed, Usher brought his sexy back when he kicked off his One Night Stand -Ladies Only tour several weeks ago looking extra dapper... thanks to Canadian twin design team Dsquared2. The design duo, brothers Dean and Dan Caten, were elated at the opportunity to provide custom wardrobe for the sexy R&B star from their Spring 2009 runway collection, which was presented in Milan earlier this year. Is Usher the man for this or what?

Two design illustrations for Usher by DSquared2

The white tuxedo and what they call "barbershop styles" inspired by the seventies compliments Usher's slick dance moves and famous slow jams quite nicely. In one set he gives boudoir bad ass in a custom silk robe and slippers with his back-up dancers wearing Dsquared2 lingerie. "We are extremely excited to collaborate with Usher and his concert tour," said the Catens. "We are both huge fans of his music, and are thrilled that for this special event he has chosen looks from our collections that we think are perfect for a One Night Stand." If you haven't been to his show yet, get ready to get turned on and fantasize about your one night stand with the buffed b-boy with the sexy voice and chiseled six-pack.

Women's shoe designer Courtney Crawford was feted recently by Italian handbag company Furla after he was chosen by the company to design shoes and bags for them as part of their Furla Talent Hub. The recognition hurls the usually low-key Crawford into the spotlight despite his penchant for staying under the radar. The Andre Leon Talley protégé' already has quite the celeb and fashion following (Mariah Carey is a fan).

Style Spotter Spots: Fashionable Watches

When the days seem to go so fast and time moves very quickly, how refreshing is it to have a time piece that is patiently handcrafted and easily chic.

Today's post salutes the wrist watch. Watches evolved in the 1600s from spring-powered clocks, which appeared in the 1400s. "The watch" has now become an important fashion accessory used to add special personality to a fashionable ensemble. One has to make an important decision before purchasing a watch: Simple, functional, and conventional or a creative, avant garde, conversation piece? Hmmm, you choose!

Simple, Functional, Conventional Watches

These watches are simply gorgeous. They have pretty faces, sophisticated bands and are made of expensive materials. Sure, there are look-a-likes, but true watch connoisseurs know a good watch will last a lifetime.

Sister Souljah Speaks on 'Midnight'

sequel (noun) A published, broadcast or recorded work that continues the story or develops the theme of an earlier one.
prequel (noun) A story or movie containing events that precede those of an existing work.

Sister Souljah wants to make it clear that her latest book, 'Midnight,' is not a sequel to 'The Coldest Winter Ever.' It's a prequel.

And for those who have been writing her and calling her hotline for the last ten years, urging her to hurry up and write the sequel to her smash success, 'The Coldest Winter Ever,' they may be waiting for a very long time.

The College Survival Guide

    A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.

    Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.

    Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.

    Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.

    MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.

    Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age

    Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.

    Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.

    Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.

    Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

"I wrote 'The Coldest Winter Ever' as a complete work. If I were to do a sequel, let's look at the story: At the end of the book, Winter went to jail and was sentenced to 15 years. When Winter comes out of prison at 33, will her story still be hot? Would she have the same confidence? Her mom is dead, her father is doing life. These are real things that happened. She doesn't have the same resources. Do you really hold the same position when you're 33? Can you talk all of that shit you talked when you were a teenager? No! So what makes that so hot?

"I loved 'The Coldest Winter Ever,' I would be a fool not to love it. I wrote it. I imagined it. I put it into circulation. But I wrote it in a complete form -- a beginning, middle, and an end."

Dress Your Thanksgiving Day Table

Posted Nov 12th 2008 10:01PM by Esther Dixon
Filed under: Style Spotter, Life and Style

This time every year, I frantically search many, many racks of clothing in numerous stores, hoping to spot a proper and pretty Thanksgiving day dress for family gatherings. Two years ago I bought a black and white polka dot dress with a dainty pink ribbon that tied across the waist. Last year, the dress of choice was an ultra-feminine pink cocktail dress with a black Parisian print. However, this Thanksgiving season the family will eat Thanksgiving Day dinner with moi, and I'm worrying less about dressing myself and more about dressing my table.

Should it be grand and elegant or understated, yet chic? Circular table or rectangular? Four pm or six pm? Where do I begin? And then the light bulb shown bright above my head, and I realized that I should seek Shelia! For those of you not in the know let me informally introduce you to Shelia Bridges. Named "America's Best Interior Designer" by CNN and Time Magazine, Shelia founded her own interior design firm in 1994. Shelia Bridges Design, Inc. is committed in creating high-end interior spaces that are thought-provoking and visually interesting while also comfortable and livable. Shelia has designed residences and offices for prominent entertainers, entrepreneurs and business professionals, including the 8,300 square foot Harlem offices for former president Bill Clinton and his staff. Needless to say Shelia knows a thing about design. I logged onto her website, www.sheliabridges.com, in hopes of being inspired, and I certainly was!

The New Sasha Fierce: Sasha Obama, First Kid Fashionista

Move over Beyoncé there's a new Sasha Fierce taking over your alter-ego moniker: 7 year-old First Daughter Sasha Obama. In the footsteps of her fashion-forward mother Michelle, the youngest of the Obama clan is so influential style-wise that the dress Baby O wore election night while onstage with her father, President-elect Barack Obama, has been named the "Sasha" dress by maker Gerson & Gerson Inc. due to its huge response after the unexpected product placement.

The little black dress ($72) was produced under the Iris & Ivy label and will be available next spring in other fabrics, colors and more stores other than Nordstrom and Dillards, where it's currently available. Gerson & Gerson President Barbara Zeins made this comment on The Wall Street Journal's website: "If you don't deserve a beautiful dress when your Dad was just elected President of the United States , when DO you? We are proud that Sasha is wearing our dress, but even prouder that this beautiful and authentic family represents the greatest Democracy in the world. Yes WE CAN."

BV Books Hot Picks - 11.11.08

Make It Plain: Standing Up And Speaking Out (Nonfiction) by Vernon Jordan
    Public Affairs, $24.95

Barack Obama may not have made it to where he is in today without men and women like MLK, Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, Medgar Evers and Vernon Jordan. They paved the way. Jordan, as president and CEO of the Urban League, executive director of the United Negro College Fund, and a major player in Washington, DC politics, has a special vantage point on the rise and success of blacks in this nation. His book gives some valuable insight.

    Public Affairs

Jurassic Park (Fiction) by Michael Crichton
    Ballantine, $7.99

We all may have seen the movie, but the book is a masterpiece. It's one in a long line of fanciful thrillers from a man who was a doctor by trade, but a classic storyteller in his soul. Michael Crichton died suddenly last week, losing a battle with cancer, but through his books -- like this one, 'Andromeda Strain,' 'Rising Sun,' 'Lost World,' 'Congo,' 'State of Fear,' et. al -- he remains very much alive.

    Ballantine

    Midnight (Fiction) by Sister Souljah
    Atria, $26.95

This is not, I repeat not a sequel or prequel to 'The Coldest Winter Ever' -- at least not in the traditional picking-up-where-we-left-off kind of way. In fact, if you're looking for a book that's even similar, you might be disappointed. But if you have a son or a nephew or a young brother, I urge you to get this book for him as a gift. Now he's not without flaws and drama, but this novel was a refreshing surprise from the "gangster love-story" tag that it bears. Warning: It's 500-plus pages.

    Atria

Get Real, Get Rich (Nonfiction) by Farrah Gray
    Penguin/Dutton, $24.95

This book should have sold millions of copies. The author comes from the ghettos on the South Side of Chicago to earn his first million by age fourteen and was the youngest person to have an office on Wall Street. He's only in his twenties, but Farrah Gray gives advice that can benefit us all. His message: You can do anything you put your mind to doing. And he gives some practical steps to getting rich, too.

    Penguin/Dutton

The Way I Am (Nonfiction) by Eminem
    Dutton, $40

He hasn't been rapping much, but Eminem hasn't gone anywhere. He's always been profound and never afraid to let it all hang out. And he keeps true to himself in this book in which he talks openly and honestly about his life-from his abusive upbringing to his volatile relationship with Kim. It's raw. It's gritty. It's Eminem. And for fans that can't get enough of this rapper, there are 250 photos in this book (and his mother will release her own memoir next month).

    Dutton

Sugar Plum Ballerinas: Plum Fantastic by Whoopi Goldberg
    Hyperion, $4.99

We always have to have a book for the kids. And this one is not just reasonably priced, it's wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated. Whoopi Goldberg isn't known for children's books, but she delivers in this genre with aplomb (pun intended).

    Hyperion

The Black Rose (Fiction) by Tananarive Due
    One World/Ballantine, $16

Since we're celebrating "firsts," let's give homage to America's first black millionaire as well as the first self-made female millionaire in the U.S., Madame CJ Walker. This is fiction based on history and Due does a wonderful job painting the picture of this colorful woman's life-using transcripts, letters and other factual documents. This is a hard book to find, but it's well worth the search.

Are "Black Books" Necessary?

Posted Nov 11th 2008 11:31AM by Karen Hunter

I am publishing a book this spring entitled "Why Men Fear Marriage." It is written by a very talented author, who has a bunch of successful novels. As a man, in his thirties who has been running away from the altar, he wanted to put the reasons why in a book for women -- all women -- to gain some insight into the mind of a man. It's brilliant. There's only one problem. He's black.

I had lunch with a major publisher yesterday and we discussed the placement of this book. She suggested selling it as a "black" book because he has an audience and a track record there. But I feel it will be a disservice to him. Aren't there millions of white women who aren't married and want to know why? And would they pick up this book if it were in the black section?

Every business begins with an idea, but entrepreneur Donna Harvey-Newman knew it would take more than just an idea to get her online business off the ground. Donna is the founder and CEO of the 'cheap chic' online shoe store FlyJane.net.

FlyJane.net was created for the fashion forward woman on a budget. "Who says that you have to be a celebrity or have a lot of money to be able to just be fabulous?" asks Harvey-Newman.

FlyJane.net offers designer inspired shoes, handbags and accessories all at a reasonable price. The website has been flourishing since its launch in May of 2004 and shows no signs of stopping. Donna Harvey-Newman recently took a moment to speak with Black Voices about the future plans for FlyJane.net and offered some advice to those who are aspiring to create a business of their own.

Black Children Lead Nation in Obesity

By Hayat Mohamed, BlackVoices.com

Obesity has been declared a national epidemic in America. What was once considered an issue among adults has sadly transcended to our youth. African-Americans have the highest obesity rates (fat determined by a high Body Mass Index) in the nation and the same is true for our children.

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, one out of every six children is obese in America and blacks and Hispanics are at the greatest risk. Among Hispanics, boys are more likely to be obese than girls, while black girls are more likely to be obese than black boys. The U.S. Department of Health contends that an obese child has a 70% chance in becoming an obese adult.

Recently the National Institute of Health and the National Council of Negro Women teamed up in Maryland for a day-long training for children ages 11-13 along with their parents called We Can! The program's mission was to educate children and their parents about fast food media messages and improve their daily nutrition. Black Voices spoke with the President of the National Council of Negro Women, Dr. Dorothy Height, about the importance of nutritional awareness in the black community.

Why is obesity a problem in the US?

It's a problem because parents are not looking at the diets that they have for their children. Children eat a great many of these fast foods as well as a lot of fried foods. What we hope to do is to help them get a picture of the reality of what it adds up to. The media often has good advertising and makes people follow the advertising. We're trying to help, through our program, people to become media smart so that they will look to see what's included in whatever is being projected.

Barack Joins Fashion Police, Not Feeling Baggy Pants

When President-elect Barack Obama spoke of the country's need for change he wasn't referring to just the economy . The GQ, Men's Vogue and Ebony poster king duly noted that when it comes to those wearing baggy pants with their underwear exposed, he just ain't feeling it. In one of his pre-election win interviews with MTV, Obama answered questions submitted by viewers emailed through Facebook.

One asked how he felt about the attempted (and successful) ban on baggy pants. Several cities in Michigan, Florida, Georgia and even a suburb in Chicago (Barack's hometown) have already passed a "Baggy Pants Bill" where an arrest for overexposure of your underwear can have you serve jail time, do community service and/or be fined as much as $500 (see chart.)

Obama's comment: "Here is my attitude: I think people passing a law against people wearing sagging pants is a waste of time. We should be focused on creating jobs, improving our schools, health care, dealing with the war in Iraq , and anybody, any public official, that is worrying about sagging pants probably needs to spend some time focusing on real problems out there. Having said that, brothers should pull up their pants. You are walking by your mother, your grandmother, your underwear is showing. What's wrong with that? Come on. There are some issues that we face, that you don't have to pass a law, but that doesn't mean folks can't have some sense and some respect for other people and, you know, some people might not want to see your underwear -- I'm one of them."

Fashion News: Michelle Obama & Wonder Woman Mania

Michelle Obama has done it again. The most stylish potential First Lady in history bowled audiences over in a stylish ensemble for her appearance on the Jay Leno show last week. The color-blocked cardigan with graphic print top and metallic-esque skirt was not only colorful and tres chic but by (drumroll please...) attainable, mass brand J.Crew. And the entire look was under $340!

Michelle Obama on Jay Leno

Fashion trade publication WWD reported that Lady O's mere mention of the brand surged traffic to J.Crew's website by a whopping 464 percent compared to the previous day's hits. When asked by Leno what did she think about Governer Palin's wardrobe budget of $150,000 for her campaign rather than comment she mentioned "This is J.Crew!" to show it's really not that serious to be so excessive. J.Crew's response to unexpected shout-out? "We are thrilled that one of the most important women in America not only noticed, but looks fantastic in our clothes," said J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons Mazeau. Recessionaistas take note: you can look fab for less. Mrs. Obama demonstrates it's all about confidence not price points and labels when it comes to her personal style. Clearly she knows what the country's priorities are.

Kim Kardashian as Wonder Woman

It seems Wonder Woman Mania will not cease anytime soon. On Halloween several celebrities wore costumes as the beautiful superhero on both coasts: R&B singer Cassie pranced with her "boss" Diddy at his bas hat Lucky Strike Lanes in New York City ; and at separate events in Hollywood, both Jada Pinkett Smith and reality star Kim Kardashian, certainly the curviest version of the three.
