Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson writes:

As a statement of fact, that's debatable at best. As a rationale for why Democratic Party superdelegates should pick her over Obama, it's a slap in the face to the party's most loyal constituency -- African Americans -- and a repudiation of principles the party claims to stand for. Here's what she's really saying to party leaders: There's no way that white people are going to vote for the black guy. Come November, you'll be sorry.

It bears remembering that no Democratic presidential candidate has won a majority of the white vote since President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. And neither will Obama - or Clinton.

As Jack and Jill Politics points out:
Democrats will certainly struggle to win without a substantial minority of white voters, but there's no question that they can't win without us.

So while black voters are expected to take a back seat, for Democrats, the road to the White House runs through black America.

More Elections Coverage
And that's partly because we have such a formidable opponent in Senator Hillary Clinton. Tonight, many of the pundits have suggested that this party is inalterably divided - that Senator Clinton's supporters will not support me, and that my supporters will not support her.

Well I'm here tonight to tell you that I don't believe it. Yes, there have been bruised feelings on both sides. Yes, each side desperately wants their candidate to win. But ultimately, this race is not about Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or John McCain. This election is about you - the American people - and whether we will have a president and a party that can lead us toward a brighter future.

Meanwhile, Clinton doesn't know the meaning of quit:
Now it is on to West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, and the other states where people are eager to have their voices heard. ...

And I am running to be the President of all of America - north, south, east and west, and everywhere in between. That's why it is so important that we count the votes of Florida and Michigan.

With only six contests remaining, neither candidate will have enough pledged delegates to clinch the nomination when the primary season ends on June 3. So the superdelegates will have to make a Solomonic decision about which candidate is more electable.

They will have to consider the racial divide. There's also a bitter divide between Clinton's and Obama's supporters. While 70 percent of Obama supporters say they'd pull the lever for Clinton if she's the nominee, half of Clinton supporters say they would not vote for Obama if he's the nominee.

In the coming weeks, there will be renewed calls for Clinton to drop out. But a new Gallup poll found that 60 percent of Democrats want the Clinton-Obama drama to continue.

More Elections Coverage
CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider said:
The bigger problem appears to be Obama's string of losses to Clinton in big states like Pennsylvania and Ohio. Those losses have not driven up Clinton's support. But they may have created doubts about Obama's ability to win.

So Obama is ignoring black voters as he pursues white working-class voters. He is expected to win North Carolina, but he must demonstrate strength among white voters to quell growing doubts about his electability. Sightings of Obama in black communities are also rare in Indiana.

While Obama will receive the overwhelming support of black voters, he needs a high black turnout in both states to maintain his lead in the popular vote. BV member Greg Jones of Blacks4Barack recently commented:
In Pa. 92% of all black voters voted for Obama. That's powerful! Only one problem....not enough registered black voters actually voted!!!!

Obama was expected to win Philadelphia in a landslide. Instead, he won the City of Brotherly Love with 65 percent of the vote. As Time magazine reports:
Indeed, some locals are pointing to the way Obama conducted his campaign in Pennsylvania as an object lesson. At one point, the Illinois Senator was asked about his lack of activity in Philadelphia's black neighborhoods and told the Philadelphia Daily News, "I'm a big believer in going to places where you're weak, not where you're strong, and reaching out to people you might not otherwise expect to vote for you." Days later, after Obama failed to carry Philadelphia by a large enough margin to compensate for losses elsewhere in the state, the newspaper ran a story with the headline, "Did Obama blow the election by blowing off Philly?"

It may be back to the future in North Carolina and Indiana.

More Coverage
+ The Audacity Of Rev. Jeremiah Wright
The Rev. Jeremiah Wright mess is getting messier. Earlier this week, Barack Obama disowned his former pastor. In a hastily called news conference, Obama said he was "outraged" and "saddened over the spectacle" that Rev. Wright made of himself before the National Press Club. Obama said that Rev. Wright "caricatured himself" and gave "comfort to those who prey on hate."

Thursday morning, Obama and his wife, Michelle, appeared on the "Today Show." In a joint interview with Meredith Vieira, they denounced Rev. Wright. Barack Obama said:
I think that the sequence of events was the right one, because this is somebody who had married Michelle and I; who had baptized our children. When those first snippets came out, I thought it was important to give him the benefit of the doubt. If I had wanted to be politically expedient, I would have distanced myself and denounced him right away. Right? That would have been the easy thing to do.

Michelle Obama added:
We hear time and time again that voters are tired of this. They don't want to hear about this division. They want to know what are we going to do to move beyond these issues. What made me so proud of Barack in this situation is that he is trying to move us as a nation beyond these conversations that divide us so deeply.

Meanwhile, a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that 32 percent of respondents have "major problems" with Obama's ties to Rev. Wright.

Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, a Hillary Clinton supporter, warns that if Obama is the nominee, Republicans will use those ties to "swift-boat" him. Bayh told the Washington Post:
You're running for president and people want to get a sense of who you are, and when you're new to the public stage you're a little more susceptible to having the canvas painted in by your political opponents.

It may be too late for Obama to distance himself from the audacious Rev. Wright. Six weeks ago in his speech on race in Philadelphia, he said:
As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. ...I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community.

Still, with polls showing him losing ground, Obama threw Wright under the bus.

Obama's <strike>crazy uncle</strike> chickens have come home to roost.
Want the Rev. Wright story to go away? It's pretty obvious that Sen. Barack Obama also wants his former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright to cool it already!

Obama told reporters Tuesday that he was "saddened" by the spectacle of Wright's comments in recent days.

"The person I saw yesterday is not the person I met 20 years ago. What particularly angered me was his suggestion somehow that my previous denunciation of his remarks were somehow political posturing," Obama said at a campaign stop in North Carolina.

DANG B! "You're not the person I met 20 years ago?!?" That sounds like something a wife tells her husband before she leaves him for another man. ...
But seriously, Obama says Wright has showed little consideration for him and his run for the presidency and it looked like he just wanted to take center stage. Obama also said that he cannot prevent Wright from speaking. True, and True.

"When I say I find these comments appalling I mean it. It contradicts what I'm about and who I am ... it is completely opposed to what I stand for and where I want to take this country."

Maybe it's time for Obama to have one-on-one with Wright or just get a divorce.
Jeremiah Wright
Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. is making headlines again. In recent days, he was interviewed by Bill Moyers and delivered a speech before the Detroit Branch of the NAACP.

In an appearance before the National Press Club, Rev. Wright said:
Why am I speaking out now? In our community, we have something called playing the dozens. If you think I'm going to let you talk about my mama and her religious tradition, and my daddy and his religious tradition, and my grandma, you've got another thing coming.

In politics, words and associations are fair game. A reality that Barack Obama acknowledged on "FOX News Sunday":
The fact that he is my former pastor I think makes it a legitimate political issue. So I understand that.

Rev. Wright tried to put his inflammatory sound bites in context:
Well, let me try to respond in a non-bombastic way. If you heard the whole sermon, first of all, you heard that I was quoting the ambassador from Iraq. That's number one.

But, number two, to quote the Bible, "Be not deceived. God is not mocked. For whatsoever you sow, that you also shall reap." Jesus said, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

You cannot do terrorism on other people and expect it never to come back on you. Those are biblical principles, not Jeremiah Wright bombastic, divisive principles.

He added:
God doesn't bless everything. God condemns something -- and d-e-m-n, "demn," is where we get the word "damn." God damns some practices.

Rev. Wright still doesn't get it: You can't contextualize "God damn America." For the overwhelming majority of Americans, God has blessed America. To suggest otherwise is anti-American and unpatriotic.

Rev. Wright may not have "trouble in mind" but his public reemergence spells trouble for Obama:
I think certainly what the last three days indicate is that we're not coordinating with him, right? He's obviously free to speak his mind, but I just want to emphasize that this is my former pastor. Many of the statements that he has made both to trigger this initial controversy and that he's made over the last several days are not statements that I've heard him make previously. They don't represent my views and they don't represent what this campaign is about.

Intentional or not, Rev. Wright is undermining Obama's efforts to woo white and blue-collar voters and close the deal.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. By endorsing Barack Obama, they allied themselves with the most liberal person in the United States Senate. He is a candidate out of touch with the voters of North Carolina who does not share the values of North Carolinians. By refusing to stand up and rightfully denounce the statements made by his controversial former associates, Perdue and Moore are giving us the impression that they share these extreme views. The voters of North Carolina should be allowed to ask a legitimate question of candidates in North Carolina. ...

The Los Angeles Times reports the ad is part of a Republican strategy to define Obama as out of the mainstream:
In Louisiana, a TV ad attacking Obama's healthcare agenda as "radical" proved so threatening that the House candidate it targeted, Democrat Don Cazayoux, distanced himself from Obama on Thursday, issuing a stern statement saying that he "has not endorsed any national politician."

The flurry of attacks underscores how Republicans and their allies are sensing opportunity in the increasingly battered image of Obama, whom many Democrats have viewed as their best hope for appealing across ideological lines and helping their party win in conservative areas.

Meanwhile, Rev. Wright has broken his silence. In an interview with Bill Moyers, Rev. Wright said the attacks on him are politically motivated:
I felt it was unfair. I felt it was unjust. I felt it was untrue. I felt for those who were doing that, were doing it for some very devious reasons.

Read the full story here. Rev. So we have to watch to see where this campaign goes.

Obviously, Senator Clinton is beginning to build some momentum, now, having done well in Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

So we look to North Carolina and to Indiana to see whether one candidate or the other can, if you will, win on the other person's court.

So we look to see whether Senator Obama can hold North Carolina or whether Senator Clinton can make a tremendous showing there. While Obama maintains a slim lead in pledged delegates, the Democratic nomination race is increasingly about race.

Twenty percent of Pennsylvania Democrats said the race of a candidate mattered. More revealing, 17 percent say they would vote for McCain or stay home if Clinton is the nominee. Twenty-five percent would vote for McCain or not vote if Obama is the Democratic standard-bearer.

Obama won Philadelphia with 65 percent of the vote. But he needed to win in a landslide to offset his limited appeal among blue-collar workers and voters who "cling to guns or religion." Obama's Philly margin might have been bigger if he had not bypassed campaigning in predominantly black areas, including Rep. Chaka Fattah's congressional district.

Exit polls suggested the race would be close but Clinton won by 10 points. Polling history tells us that in matters of race, voters lie. So it was wishful thinking to believe that the Jeremiah Wright, "typical white person" and Bittergate controversies would not weigh on white voters' minds in the privacy of the voting booth.

In this history-making primary season, race has become the Democratic Party's Achilles heel.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. He likely won't participate in a debate in the run-up to the North Carolina primary:
We're trying to figure out what our schedule looks like. Kaplan wants the League of Women Voters to step in:
Would someone please get the networks out of the presidential debate business?

The networks and the national press love their gotchas, their -gates, their "controversies," their heat. They, alas, are not the grownups in the political process. The grownups are the voters, who -- lamely, in the mind of the political class -- are troubled by the war, the economy and boring stuff like that. Stuff that networks think make for lousy television.

I don't blame news producers for doing what they think their job is, which is scoring brag-worthy Nielsens. I don't blame political talking heads for being infatuated with the narratives that they themselves create and market. Twenty years later, the mainstream media and their obsession with gotcha politics are trying to set the agenda. There were sounds of dismay when Clinton hit below the belt with "some of the relationships with Reverend Farrakhan."

The Pennsylvania primary is five days away but the real swing voters are the undecided superdelegates who will determine the party's nominee. The debate presented two different visions of the road to victory in the general election.

Clinton focused on her "lifetime trying to empower people, trying to fight for them:"
And I hope that I have demonstrated not just over the last weeks or even over the last hour and half but over a lifetime that you can count on me. You know where I stand. You know that I will fight for you and that together we're going to take back our country.

Obama offered a different roadmap to victory:
And so my point to the superdelegates would be that if we're going to deliver on health care for every American, improve our schools, deliver on jobs, then it's going to be absolutely vital we form a new political coalition in this country. That's what we've been doing in this campaign, and that's what I'm going to do when I'm president of the United States of America.

It's an unanswered question whether superdelegates will cruise on down the highway with Clinton or take the road less traveled with Obama.

More Elections Coverage
+ <a href="http://www.blackvoices.com/blogs/2008/04/16/bob-johnson-barack-obama-Ferraro/" onclick="doFMClick(this,'','')" onmouseover="javascript:showPop(event, this,'Filed under: Elections, Barack Obama, Hillary ClintonThe Democratic presidential nomination battle is stuck on race.
