Clinton's Trump Card: Vote White

Hillary Clinton says she is in it "until there is a nominee." As Clinton tries to wrest the Democratic nomination away from Barack Obama, she has put her trump card on the table: race.

Clinton's comeback, such as it is, began in Pennsylvania. So it's fitting that she's channeling Frank Rizzo, the race-baiting mayor of Philadelphia. In 1978, Rizzo wanted to change the rules city charter so that he could run for a third consecutive term. He rallied support for the charter amendment by imploring his supporters to "Vote White."

Red, Black, (But Not) Green - Toxic Sludge In Our Front Yards

Listen, if you like the idea of having recycled sh*t being spread on your front lawn, then this blog posting probably isn't for you.

But otherwise, you'll probably take offense to a report that is soon to go before a U.S. Senate Committee hearing on government funding of sewer sludge being used in black communities to test whether it is a remedy for lead poisoning.

Does this sound pretty much like the stupidest thing you've heard in a week of stupid things? Well, I'm willing to bet that it is. The Associated Press reported recently that lawmakers are going to investigate the use of the sludge in poor black communities in Baltimore to see if lead from chipped paint and car exhausts would stick to it.

Can anyone say Tuskeegee Experiment? I mean dammit! When I hear about things like this, it really brings out my inner-Jeremiah Wright. As much as I love being a citizen, as Wright would say: "God Damn America!"

Philly Reveals a Public Safety Gray Area

Here's where the clear path turns into a labyrinth.

By now, most of you have heard about the videotaped police beating of three murder suspects in Philadelphia. The cops were looking for the perpetrators of a nearby shooting that was believed to be retaliatory. Reports say they sped away from the scene of the crime and the police gave chase. No gun was found in their car, but shell casings were found at the site of the shooting.

But the Philly incident marks a city desparate to find a solution to spiraling violence that has gripped the city. The most recent incident was the killing of a Philly cop on Saturday. Citizens are wrenching their hands, and unlike the cop killing of Sean Bell in New York, an innocent man, this one is about brazen criminals who are virtually free to carry weapons being stopped before another child dies.

50 Shots Reverberate Around NYC

Thousands of New Yorkers demonstrated across New York City to protest the acquittals of three police officers in the killing of Sean Bell in a barrage of 50 shots. The demonstrators carried signs that read "We Are All Sean Bell: This Damn System is Guilty" and chanted, "No justice, no peace."

As many as 200 protesters were arrested, including The Rev. Al Sharpton and Bell's fiancée Nicole Paultre Bell. ...

Oprah: Knowing Wright from Wrong

It seems that the controversy swirling around Barack Obama's former pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright just won't end.

In the May 12th issue of 'Newsweek' magazine, the focus has turned from the Democratic presidential candidate to talk show Queen Oprah Winfrey. It would appear that while Winfrey has parlayed her gift of gab into a lucrative empire, she didn't appreciate the inflammatory tone of Rev. Wright's speech while she attended his church.

Winfrey, a transplant to Chicago like Obama, was most likely drawn to the sense of community at the Trinity United Church of Christ when she began attending in 1984. It was the house of worship's assistance to the poor and its down home southern values that probably gave her a sense of connectedness to her new city .

But it only took Winfrey two years to pull up stakes, only attending services there infrequently until the mid 1990's.

So what cooled her warm and fuzzy feeling? According to the article, written by Allison Samuel, it was Wright and organized religion that made Winfrey weary.

Mario Gets Bounced From "Dancing"

"Dancing with the Stars" heart throb Mario was sent packing during Tuesday's show, but what's harder to believe is ABC's dancing competition made it to its 100th episode.

Anything's possible. Afterall, Marissa's still in the competition with her two left feet. ...

A Divided Democratic Party, Clinton Won't Quit

As expected, Barack Obama won North Carolina. Hillary Clinton eked out a slim victory in Indiana. The outcomes were preordained by the demographics of the two states.

CNN exit polls show Democrats have not moved beyond race. In North Carolina, African Americans made up one-third of Democratic primary voters. Obama received 91 percent of the black vote to Clinton's seven percent. Sixty-one percent of white voters supported Clinton, 37 percent supported Obama.

In Indiana, Obama received 90 percent of the black vote to Clinton's 10 percent. Sixty percent of white voters supported Clinton, 40 percent backed Obama.

Bell Case: A Glass Ceiling for Justice

No Way to Find Them Guilty

Reuters

These are the blog postings I hate to write. My disdain comes because I know it will qualify something I hated hearing. But I must accept the outcome of the Sean Bell verdict, even if ultimately it is unfair to those affected.

No matter what i write, it will be unfair to a father, unfair to his fiance Nicole Paultre Bell, his children, his parents and Trent Benefield and Joseph Guzman, his friends. It is unfair to everyone seeking justice for a death that was not supposed to happen.

It is so unfair, it makes you want to scream, like the nun, pictured above. It was hard for so many people to accept the outcome when the not guilty verdict came down inside a courthouse in Queens, New York.

It is unfair, but what is the truth? The three policemen acquitted for killing Bell went free because there was no way to find them guilty.

Wyclef Leads Haiti's Child Vaccination Movement

Haitian-born music star Wyclef Jean is again helping his homeland, getting the word out in an effort to vaccinate more than five million children and youth against measles and rubella -- preventable diseases which kill Haiti's children in droves each year.

The producer, solo-standout and Fugees star kicked off the second phase of the ALAS project with a new public service announcement aimed at the citizens of the impoverished island nation (watch above). ... Wyclef is a founding member of the ALAS Foundation.

Mobilizing Justice for Sean Bell

In the quest for justice for Sean Bell, the Rev. Al Sharpton is mobilizing New Yorkers to participate in a months-long civil disobedience campaign. During the Saturday rally at the House of Justice, Sharpton said:
We will do it on a weekly basis building toward a citywide shutdown. Wednesday is the beginning as we move toward that date which we will announce once we are prepared.

We will submit to an arrest. If you're not going to lock up the guilty in this town, then I guess you're going to have to lock up the innocent.

Top Ten Surprising Facts About Barack Obama

Barack Obama made a trip back to The Late Show with David Letterman, where he delivered surprising facts about himself from Indiana.

Straight up, his first Top Ten of campaign promises was funnier. I don't watch the show, but I'm glad to see Letterman's sort of old-school "ba-dump-dump" comedy still going strong.

Some people say candidates shouldn't do this stuff, these silly cameos. ...

Barack to the Future: Polls Say Obama's Slipping?

Baseball great Satchel Paige famously said: "Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you." Barack Obama says he's moving forward, but Hillary Clinton is still gaining on him.

A new Pew Research Center poll found that Obama's lead over Clinton among Democratic voters has disappeared:
The tightening Democratic race reflects a modest but consistent decline in Obama's personal image rather than improved impressions of Clinton. Fewer Democrats ascribe positive qualities to Obama than did so a month ago, with white working-class Democrats, in particular, expressing more skeptical views of the Illinois senator.

OH MY GOD!!!!

This is some funny sh*t, if I've ever seen it. This latest viral video comes courtesy of the Detroit City Council, the Detroit News...and I guess I've misjudged the productiveness of the Detroit Public School system.

The Audacity of Rev. Wright

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright mess is getting messier. Earlier this week, Barack Obama disowned his former pastor. In a hastily called news conference, Obama said he was "outraged" and "saddened over the spectacle" that Rev. Wright made of himself before the National Press Club. Obama said that Rev. Wright "caricatured himself" and gave "comfort to those who prey on hate."

Thursday morning, Obama and his wife, Michelle, appeared on the "Today Show." In a joint interview with Meredith Vieira, they denounced Rev. Wright. Barack Obama said:
I think that the sequence of events was the right one, because this is somebody who had married Michelle and I; who had baptized our children. When those first snippets came out, I thought it was important to give him the benefit of the doubt. If I had wanted to be politically expedient, I would have distanced myself and denounced him right away. Right? That would have been the easy thing to do.
