LL Cool J: Reconsidering His Final 'Exit'

By Brennan Williams, BlackVoices.com

For the past two years hip-hop veteran LL Cool J has been very vocal, to say the least, about his displeasure in the way Def Jam Records were handling their business.

Well now the Queens legend has appeared to have a change of heart for the label.

With newly appointed Executive Vice President Shakir Stewart overseeing his 13th and final album with Def Jam, 'Exit 13,' LL feels pretty confident about the project's outcome.

"We have a great relationship," Cool J said recently at the '2008 Essence Music Festival.' "I own my catalog and they administrate my catalog, so we're going to always have that relationship moving forward. I feel really good about Shakir [the new president], and I feel really good about L.A. Reid."

He continued, "I think that the world is hearing and seeing more LL Cool J musically in the last six months than you have seen me in the last two and half years. So I think it's pretty obvious that I'm focused and they're focused."

And focused he is.

Over the past few weeks, not only did the 'I Need Love' MC release his new single 'Baby' and, appear on the remixes to Alicia Keys' 'Teenage Love Affair' and G-Unit's 'Straight Outta Southside,' he also released his very first mixtape with New York City DJ, Kay Slay titled 'Return of the G.O.A.T.'

By Brennan Williams, BlackVoices.com

With various music festivities and empowerment seminars coming to an end on Sunday afternoon, the '2008 Essence Music Festival' left New Orleans with a bang!

Sunday night's show was filled with everything from charismatic singer Morris Day gracing the stage with his 'Jungle Love' to Frankie Beverly and Maze bringing the 'Joy' to their closing performance.

If that didn't spark your interest, Chris Rock was guaranteed to having you laughing out loud.

Rock covered everything from today's high gas prices to Barack Obama running for president. "We ain't never seen a brother this cool and legal in our lives," he said to the audience. "And he look soo young too. Everytime I see Barack I'm like, 'so when are you getting back with New Edition.' He look like he could sing Candy Girl any minute."

In between Chris's clever and witty jokes, R&B singers Keyshia Cole and Mary J. Blige brought the real party to the Louisiana Superdome.

Keyshia hit the stage very energetically to the Alicia Keys produced 'I Just Want It (To Be Over),' before performing her ballads 'I Should've Cheated' and 'Love.'

But don't mistaken the singer-songwriter for only performing ballads.

Last night men and women from all over the country were fresh, dressed like a million bucks, as the '2008 Essence Music Festival' kicked off it's second night of music festivities at Louisiana's Superdome.

And talk about a show!

Unlike the previous night, Saturday's lineup featured a more grown and sexy vibe from the likes of Musiq Soulchild, LL Cool J, Jill Scott, and the living legend herself Patti LaBelle.

Following Musiq's opening performance LL Cool J took the stage backed by his original DJ, Cut Creator, wearing an orange New York Yankees hat, tee-shirt and jeans to prove that he's still 'Bad.'

L.L. brought a handful of women on stage to help him represent Queens for his sexual anthem 'Doin' It.' Which had just about every women in attendance scrambling to find out how Mr. Todd Smith was really doing.

L's extensive catalog of hits also lead to him performing 'I Need Love,' 'Loungin,' 'Around the Way Girl,' and his single 'Baby,' among many other hits.

If that wasn't good enough to keep the Superdome on their feet, Scott brought her smooth, sensual sounds from Philly to New Orleans.

The multi-talented singer-songwriter, actress incorporated some hip-hop flavor for 'Slowly Surely,' which sampled De La Soul's 1996 hit 'Stakes Is High.'

McDonald's 365 Black Awards: Fast Food Giant Recognizes The Real

"The 5th Annual McDonald's 365 Black Awards" kicked off the "2008 Essence Music Festival" weekend in New Orleans today, recognizing not only African American culture, but the history and achievements by selected individuals who have made an impact over the course of the year.

Nationally syndicated radio personality and philanthropist Tom Joyner -- a 2003 honoree -- presented awards to author/journalist Roland S. Martin, McDonald's Owner/Operator Ernie Adair, Humanitarian Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, and retired McDonald marketing chief William J. Lamar Jr.

"This year's McDonald's 365Black Awards recipients are individuals who are changing the face of the African American community by impacting education, the media environment and the business world every single day of the year," said McDonald's USA President Don Thompson -- who did not attend the function but sent a taped video message. "They inspire all of us with their leadership and scholarship in areas that touch our lives."

Martin, a CNN contributor with increasing popularity, accepted his award with much verve, inspiring future leaders to take control of their career and use their voice instead of complaining.

He said he always approach any job as if he was going to get fired anyway, so why not keep it real.

In his introductory video montage, the proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. said that with his job he's "going to talk about you if you're doing bad, and talk about you if you're doing good."

That keep-it-real attitude has enabled his brand to transcend traditional media outlets and extend into digital arenas.

Despite his album, 'Tha Carter III' being leaked to the internet two weeks prior to its June 10 release, Lil Wayne (born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.) has cracked the million mark and went platinum with 1,005,000 albums sold during the first week of release.

Not only has Weezy (as he is known) topped this week's album charts he has also earned the title of being the first artist (since 50 Cent's 2005 collection 'The Massacre') to sell more than one million copies within its debut week.

Kanye West (who produced two tracks on 'Tha Carter III') was the only other artist to come close when he released his 2007 album 'Graduation,' which put up 957,000 during its first week out.

As for Mr. Carter's reaction to the big news, he released a video clip late Tuesday evening thanking everyone from fellow 'Carter' collaborator Jay-Z to Universal Records honcho Sylvia Rhone (who is highlighted in our Black Music Month celebration.)

Bobby Brown: The Truth About Usher

By Brennan Williams, BlackVoices.com

"I've always considered myself 'The King of Stage.' To this very day, I still don't think anyone can get with me on the stage. I own the stage," Bobby Brown confidently proclaims in his new autobiography, 'Being Bobby Brown: The Truth and Nothing But ...'

As previously reported, BlackVoices.com has exclusively obtained an advance copy of the memoir, where Brown also revealed his past relationship with R&B superstar Usher (who he calls his "little mini me").

"I watched one of Usher's shows and he basically did my whole show," the 'My Prerogartive' crooner writes. "It was as if it was me on stage. The thing about it is, I love seeing that. It's a compliment to me as a performer."

The 'former New Edition singer totally understands Usher's reason for emulating his stage performance, to a point in which he once took elements of Prince, Michael Jackson and James Brown.

"I think you take parts of whoever is the hottest act of that era and you incorporate that into your own style," Brown explained. "It's just like taking buttermilk, eggs and corn meal, you whip it up bake it and you have cornbread."

It's quite obvious he gave that same advice to a young Usher, who he said he once personally trained.

Jimi Hendrix: The $100,000 Sex Tape Challenge

By Brennan Williams, BlackVoices.com

Vivid Entertainment is determined to prove the authenticity of its latest release, 'Jimi Hendrix: The Sex Tape.'

So much so that they are putting their money where their porn is.

The controversial video which was released on May 6, allegedly features late rock & roll icon Jimi Hendrix involved in a sexual escapade with two unidentified brunettes.

As BlackVoices.com previously reported last week, Hendrix's estate, Experience Hendrix,LLC has publicly denied the tape and released a statement saying, "[strongly disputing] the claimed authenticity and affirmatively state that Experience Hendrix is neither involved in, nor have we authorized the distribution of this film."

However, Vivid co-chairman Steven Hirsch says the company's statement "proves nothing."

"Vivid took considerable time and spent a substantial sum of money to authenticate the footage and we are very comfortable that this is the real thing," Hirsch said.

"We believe that those who say otherwise are relying on their emotions to make unsubstantiated claims."
