Soulja Boy Salutes Slave Masters - Seriously?

Posted Oct 31st 2008 10:00AM by Carmen Dixon
Filed under: BlackSpin, Race and Civil Rights

http://www.aolcdn.com/ch_bv/soulja_boy_main_132.jpgSome time ago conservative pundit and author Pat Buchanan was roundly and correctly criticized for saying that black Americans who are descendants of slaves, should be thankful that their ancestors were sold into a life of bondage, torture and oppression.

Buchanan's belief presumes that the only way that blacks would have found a way to America would have been on a slave ship and that the slave thing was a net benefit to many of us.

Apparently, Souljah Boy believes the same thing. According to Toure via 'The Daily Beast' website:

Then came Soulja Boy Tell Em. I asked him, "What historical figure do you most hate?" He was stumped. I said, "Others have said Hitler, bin Laden, the slave masters ..." He said, "Oh wait! Hold up! Shout out to the slave masters! Without them we'd still be in Africa."

My jaw, at this point, was on the ground."We wouldn't be here," he continued, having no idea how far in it he'd stepped, "to get this ice and tattoos."

Ice and tattoos.

What to say?

I am wondering if that is the most ignorant comment I've ever heard. Maybe not it ... but close.

Seriously, I'm betting that some agree with Souljah Boy's assessment of slavery's impact on the black community. I, on the other hand, always consider what Africa might have looked like if millions of our ancestors had not been dragged from the continent.

My friend Tyler is a little more blunt about it.

1. he is young and dumb! he will make mistakes!

we all have , but with the internet this dumb statement will live on forever!

THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK YOUNG MAN!

2. Comments like these are why our community is in such turmoil. The most pathetic thing about soulja boy is that there are other young people who will probably go around quoting this. Trust me, the slave masters did not do my family any favors. As far as being better off in American vs Africa. At least Africans know who they are as a people and take pride in their history and their past. Africans have a purpose in who what they do and they see a bigger picture. As a young African-American I see why people look at my generation as the lost generation because we don't have a clue about anything important.

3. I took the comment as sarcasim...if not, he's just plain ignorant.

Lynette at 12:23PM on Oct 31st 2008

4. That has to be one of the dumbest thing I've ever heard/read!

Joyce at 12:43PM on Oct 31st 2008

5. That is exactly the kind of statement that comes out of someones mouth that was not educated on what the effects of slavery were/are. He is a prime example of that effect.

Chez-Cerise at 1:34PM on Oct 31st 2008

6. I believe he said that to make a point. We were brought here as slaves and now we've climbed so far up the racial ladder that we can have anything or everything if not nicer things than people of other races have.

Most of the life we see and hear of in the media about Africa is from a negative aspect (poverty, AIDS, outrageous death rates).

I just think his terminology was off. Instead of thanking the slave masters, he should thank God! Try that next time S.B. to avoid misinterpretation!

7. We all know he is ignorant; this is not a surprise.

I blame his parent(s) for this. I'm sure this was something taught in the home (like racism and manners).

Tiffany at 1:49PM on Oct 31st 2008

8. I'm not surprised! Unfortunately I watched his Ice-Cube diss video on you-tube (me and my Sorors were bored) and he sounded really young and immature. So it's not too far-fetched for him to make such a stupid statement like the one aforementioned. He and a lot of other young rappers, athletes and public figures are very uneducated and don't know how to think about the world and articulate anything, let alone discuss race issues, culture, art, etc. The problem is that these overaged babies have a fan-bases that includes our little brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and children. We need to start censoring what our babies our taking in and start actually teaching them ourselves. Our school systems cannot be held responsible for everything. Some of this ignorance is coming from our homes. I rue the day when the Souljah Boy generation starts running the country!

9. I would have to see and hear this comment come out of this child's mouth before I will believe this. I've heard SB speak about his life and accomplishments and I walked away thinking he was far from being stupid or even average. That's why I'm sitting here not believing this.

Shelli at 2:28PM on Oct 31st 2008

10. Well i am raising a 13 year old black leader. And i thank God that he does not look up to anyone but his mother. He is an ab student and studies martial arts. He has much pride in himself. Oh and did i mention i am a true single mother. This is the future generation not these wannabe young men who talk foolishly and wear their pants down below their behinds. I don't even think this young man deserves any attention. In a few years we won't even know where he is.. Instead of giving the bafoons of the entertainment industy a second though we need to be shedding the light on the young black children who are doing great things!!

11. Someone just needs to spend some of that money on history lessons you think

tam at 3:05PM on Oct 31st 2008

12. This dumb ass little boy sould have stayed in school and learned History. For one Africans were one of the first to have tattoes and little dumb fucker, where do one of the places diamonds come from?

Luduh at 3:12PM on Oct 31st 2008

13. This is the 'mind-set' of our A-A young people today. They don't know anything. Period! When we ask, "Where are their parents?" Their parents are young '40-something' High School Drop-outs.

C. Walker at 3:16PM on Oct 31st 2008

14. I can’t help but wonder why, five generations since the emancipation proclamation, so many of us are still living on the plantation of self-pity? Other minorities came here and prospered, but we continue to lead every negative statistic.

My grandfather, after he found himself oppressed and denied the opportunities he deserved as a citizen, moved his family where he could capitalize on his initiative. Safe to say, he was a man way ahead of his time. Our family grew a real appreciation of the fantastic opportunities available to those who can see beyond their own self-pity.

Some advice from one who has seen the other side; look in the mirror rather than to big government. Look for opportunities rather than blame “big corporations”, et al. The greatest fraud ever committed was the “Great Society” as it unreasonably raised expectations. LBJ’s motives were not to benefit the poor but to satiate his own ego.

Unfortunately I fear our country is about to compound on the LBJ error by electing someone who perpetuates the myth of Robin Hood. We have failed to learn the lessons of history.

A. Nandy at 3:31PM on Oct 31st 2008

15. well it's unfortunate that people veiw our young AA children that way. And again it's only because we continue to highlight the negative children while the ones who are doing great things are overlooked. There are many young positive AA boys and girls..But until we stop giving all the attention to the rappers, thug athletes, bling bling and such this is what everyone will think of our children including some from their own race. And i am a young 40 something college educated parent.
