Marion Jones Tells Oprah: "I Have to Find Out Who I Am"

Posted Oct 30th 2008 12:00PM by Quibian Salazar-Moreno
Filed under: Casually Obsessed, Sports

Disgraced Olympic runner Marion Jones gave her first public interview since being released from prison on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' yesterday. She talked with Oprah about using a designer steroid called "clear," lying about it and about her time in prison. Jones told Oprah that she thought that the substance she had been given by her trainer, Trevor Graham, was flaxseed oil. But when prosecutors showed her the vial of "the clear," she recognized it as what Graham had given her.

"I made the decision I was going to lie and try to cover it up," Jones told Oprah. "I knew that all of my performances would be questioned. I'll ask myself, `Well, if you hadn't been given "the clear" do you think you would've won?' I usually answer, 'Yes.'" ...

Jones also read a letter that she wrote in prison that apologized to her teammates, who were also stripped of their relay race gold medals from the 2000 Sydney Games, and her children, whom she told that she lied because she didn't love herself enough. Jones said she will never run again and hopes to inspire young people to make better decisions. She also do a bit of soul-searching. Watch Jones read her letter here.

"I don't have athletics anymore to hide behind," Jones said. "In the past, it was Marion Jones, the athlete. ... I don't have that cover anymore. I have really had to find out who I am and why I make certain choices."

1. I saw this interview - in the wee hours of the morning so maybe I missed it. I didn't see her read a letter to her teammates. I thought about it because I wondered about how they took it. Then Oprah asked her about not having specifically apologized to them before. She then spoke to them by camera.

I was moved by this interview - never followed the case before. Her letter to her kids was touching, they'll get it one day.
I was somewhat concerned that her apology to her teammates seemed somewhat distracted. I can't imagine why she wouldn't have been in touch before. They all lost their medals. OUCH!

I feel for her and her teammates. But she seems just fine.

2. First I just want to say, I love Marion Jones and I think with out the drug she still would of kick a against everyone she beat. I'm glad she's out of jail and I believe she can still become a great legend again. I still believe in Marion Jones..

3. oh, come on now...she is guilty of lying for years...and she took more than the clear as her former husband said under testimony...everyone around her was on the stuff...i really find it hard to believe how some people will believe ANYTHING. I used to really like Marion but she is and was a fraud.

4. If I was an Athlete I would be very careful who train me and careful who administer drugs to me. But I do believe when you gifted with athletics ability and endurance quaulity as Marion Jones she could have won it with or without the drugs. The girl is just gifted.
And she will be alright

5. I am sorry her teammates lost their medals. I think only Marion should have. She has paid a high price for what she has done. I do hope others see her and learn from her mistakes. She needs to find herself and find real rassion for life again.

8. I watched the interview. I also agree I think Marion coulda beat anybody with or with out the drug. However, I think it's wrong her teammates lost their medals--after all that, I didn't feel much for Marion. Missing her, children, yes--I felt that. Yet when she spoke of her teammamtes, and just her over words and actions---nope, didn't feel it. I do feel she'll come back on on top. I'm not so sure Oprah believed her either.

10. HEY LIVING THE WAY WE WANT TO IS HARD THESE DAYS

BIGMONEY100@BLACKVOICES.COM at 1:09AM on Oct 31st 2008

11. Oh please! She knowingly used drugs. CJ Hunter told the truth and it all came out in court. That's why she went to jail. Everyone elsefessed up but her. Obviously, Marion can't stand to fade into oblivion so back to Oprah. She has no shame, and jail didn't teach her not to lie.
I have absolutely no sympathy for her. You cannot take her at her word ever again after the years of lies and slandering people who came after her. What did she say? "Kangaroo court"? Yes, and they hopped her right to jail too.

12. You must admit, she was still looking pretty good.

13. Yes she made a huge mistake. We all have choices in this life, and a free will. She is human as all of us are human and we have to live with the consequences of our actions. Instead of judging her, pray for her. No person on this earth is perfect, WE HAVE ALL MADE MISTAKES. What did Donnie McClurklin say "We fall down, but we get up." Marion now is the time to turn around and turn the negatives in to positives, and go an be a blessing to others. Teach others to choose the right choices, but as the old adage says "We will all Reap what we Sow". Be Blessed.

15. THIS YOUNG LADY HAS A BEAUTIFUL TESTIMONY AND AS I COULD SEE AND HEAR BY HER ADMISSION AND REPROVE, SHE IS STARTING TO SEE AND KNOW AND HEAR THE REAL FROM THE FALSE, AND THAT'S A GOOD THING FOR HER. SHE WILL BE ABLE TO NOW SEE LIFE IN IT'S REALITY AND SURREALNESS. MAY GOD BLESS AND KEEP HER IS MY PRAYER.
