Luv Coach Q&A: Make up or Break up?

Posted Oct 16th 2008 8:46AM by Rebecca Brody
Filed under: Lifestyle, Love, Life and Style

I just found out that my boyfriend of 3 years has cheated on me again. He has been lying to me for months about where he has been, and I found out from the woman he was cheating with. I'm very embarrassed that I allowed him to do this to me again, but I still love him. He tells me it's my fault that he cheated, and says that I'm a snob and that I'm just not there for him. He is still living in my home, and some days he acts like nothing has happened. When he acts this way, I kinda wish we could go back to being together, but I also feel lost. What should I do?

When you are confronted with a cheating spouse, it is easy to struggle with the idea that you may be the one to blame for their infidelity, especially when they point the finger in your direction. The truth is, cheating is a choice, and a selfish and damaging one at that. Any partner who chooses to break the requirements of a relationship is sending you the clear message that they do not want to be in a committed relationship with you. No matter what their words are, their actions speak clearly for them. The actions of your boyfriend reflect a person who is emotionally immature, controlling, and irresponsible. Is this the kind of person you want holding your heart? In order to begin the healing process, you will need to confront the one person responsible for your happiness: You! It's time to break up, and take the steps to find out who you are once again.

The College Survival Guide

    A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.

    Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.

    Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.

    Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.

    MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.

    Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age

    Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.

    Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.

    Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.

    Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

I just turned 30, and I feel like I should be engaged and married. I want to be a young mom. My boyfriend, who had told me in the past that he wants me to be his wife, has now changed his mind. His parents recently got divorced, and he suddenly believes that marriage isn't normal for people. I'm completely stunned and shocked. Where do I go from here?

It sounds like you are holding onto a set plan for the direction your relationship and life should go in. It is good to have big dreams, and to set clear goals for life, but to stick rigidly to a timeline will only leave you stressed and feeling like a failure when those deadlines are not met. A relationship is made up of two people, and as a couple you must work to grow together and maintain your sacred connection. It is time to make up. Reach out and find a couples relationship coach who can help you reconnect, and confront the limiting beliefs both you and your boyfriend have established about marriage.

1. People stay with cheater for different reasons. I did it because I didn't want to start over. But later I realize on what I was putting up. There are so many other people worthy of my time. I let that go, and good things finally came my way. Its up to the one being cheated on to realize there is always better.

2. There are a lot of women that just don't seem to get it when it comes to being in a relationship with a man. If a woman accepts the fact that her man cheated on her and allows him to stay in her life there is a 50% chance that he will do it again. I did not say that in every situation it is the same but most of the time it is. Cheating again is a sign of total disrespect and it seems as though women hang on anyway and it never works out leaving them bitter and angry in the end. Not all men cheat but most do and even the one's that don't will if they think that they can get away with it. That's fact not fiction. If ladies spent more time listening to their male friends or relatives instead of their misguided girl friends they would fare better when dealing with men.

3. O HELL NO WOMAN - THIS MAN NOT ONLY HAS NO RESPECT FOR YOU OR YOUR BODY - BUT DOES NOT RESPECT HIS! ALL THE DIRTY AND INFECTED PEOPLE OUT THERE AND HE WANTS TO SLEEP AROUND- GIRL I WOULD BE PISSED!DO YOU KNOW IF HE EVEN USED ANY

4. When people show you who they really are, you should believe them and act accordingly.

5. Men get cheated on too!!! A lot !! And in case you don't know we hurt, just ask us.

Cheating destroys trust, not break it for later mending, for it cannot be mended. Forgive the cheater and move on. A mentally sound, decent and moral person ends one relationship before starting another. It’s also good for one’s health.

Last December I discovered by chance that the woman to whom I was engaged, and who I thought I knew for 2 years, cheated on me repeatedly. She denied everything, and went through a chain of at least six successive lies, each one becoming more elaborate as I discredited its predecessor. Finally she blamed me for HER behavior, saying it's because we were in separate towns, although we saw each other frequently. I fully and completely provided her financial and all other material support including paying for college and helping her family. I was fully committed, and the relationship by all measures was great on both of our accounts.

At her decent sister's and mother’s behest, I stayed with her, but I was angry and never trusted her again, so I quit last June. This experience has not made me cynical about love, but I now carry a healthy dose of skepticism, because I thought I had vetted her well.

Any DECENT woman out there looking for a darn good man??? It’s tough out there.

6. I don't think women always listen to their girlfriends! If that the case then your saying that they deserved to get cheated on! Women are more emtional then men and that sometimes leads them to believe that they can still have a relationship with this man!

Lites at 12:20PM on Oct 25th 2008

7. I say kick the lying cheating deadbeat to the curb. It's all about self worth. If you feel like you're only worthy of a cheater, then that's what you end up with. You need to step back and do some soul searching to figure out why this person is allowed to not only disrespect you, but to sleep and live in YOUR spot. And if a man says he doesn't want to get married, and you do, hard as it might be......move on. People need to stop being people pleasers and stop trying to change others. If you and he are on different pages for such a major life changing decision, then don't settle. See what else is out there for you.

8. All pepole are human and make mistakes and if it is True Love and you deside to try again thats okay and if not then move on and only this time listen to that voice in your head its always right.

9. When me and my boyfriend got together we talked about marrage and if we both were down for it, and we both were, but three years into the relationship he saying that he does not want to get married. now i'm only 26 so im in no rush but I do want to get married one day. I have a 3 1/2 year old daughter from a previous relationship and I want more children but I refuse to be another mans baby mama. My daughters father died two years ago and left her nothing. Im so scared that that will happen again. He wants to have a child but not get married and that just deos not make sence to me. I can say that i'm a mother so why can't I say that i'm a wife? Why are men especially black men so afraid to get married?

Octavia at 1:05PM on Oct 25th 2008

10. Black women simply are NOT the best choice for the black man because of her disrespectful dishonoring attitudes towards black men... White females and other non-black women are a much better choice for the black man who wants a happy and committed relationship.

Black women are too hard to get along with, this makes white women much more attractive because of their more easy going nature and they are generally more feminine..IMO.

GW at 1:23PM on Oct 25th 2008

11. well i was in two relationships and both dogs cheated on me and i think no man is going to find a nicer woman than me. yes it hurts and stay with you for sometime but its a hurt you have to learn and let go because what people fail to relaize what you do too people will surely come back on you. one thing i learned never to put trust in a man because ladies they will tear you down and then move on. learn to hold your head up and dont cry over spilled milk because better things are out there for you, and its someone out there will know how tto treat you and give you the love you deserve. tina

ERNESTINE WILSON at 1:52PM on Oct 25th 2008

12. To GW
I think that your comment that Black women are not the best choice for Black men is insane. To insinuate that Black women in general are not good mates is so stupid!! Do you not come from a Black woman and or have Black sisters and relatives? There is good and bad in every race and people love whom they choose( Black,White,Asian,Latino...etc) To say that we African American women are not feminine and Caucaseans easier to get along with is closed-minded. That is your choice and yours to decide for your life if you exclusively date/married outside of your race but do not make generalizations like that. It sounds really ignorant in 2008. There is disrespect and dishonor is many relationships regardless of Ethnicity. I am an educated, honorable and respectful HAPPILY MARRIED Black woman and I take offense to your comment. Please show some sensitivity when making rude and unfounded comments such as yours when posting on a Black Voices Blog.

Stepmother at 2:08PM on Oct 25th 2008

13. Tina,,, even though you said,,,"no man is going to find a nicer woman than me",,,black women generally have a bad reputation for how they treat their men.... This accounts for a lot of why black men cheat or don't want to marry black women.

We often don't feel we can trust black women so we don't commit to them physically or emotionally.

GW at 2:15PM on Oct 25th 2008

14. To Stepmother:

You as an "honorable and respectful HAPPILY MARRIED Black woman" is an exception... The fact is that MOST black women are NOT married and never will be married... This is not because of a black man shortage, but mainly because most black men are much happier and are treated better by NON-black women...
Also, the sex is much better especially with white females... I say this as a black man who's dated/married black women... Sorry if it offends you.

And yes, I have black women in my family all of whom are manless and NOT by choice,,,they ran their black men away... I would NOT recommend that a black man should date or marry ANY of my black women relatives,,, not if he wants to be happy.

Black women genarally have too many issues to deal with to make good partners in a healthy relationship,,, that's why black women are not the best choice for the black man...IMO.

GW at 2:42PM on Oct 25th 2008

15. We all have to learn from our mistakes. I hope that she learns. I stayed with my triflin Prom date (no longer call him my ex) after he cheated on me the 1st time. He said the girl had Ass and her Hair was longer than mines when I confronted him about why would he cheat on me. He knew I was insecure about bein skinny and most definitely used that to his advantage when we were seein each other...which only made my self esteem worse and me feel like he was the best I could do. When he left me for another thick gurl, Surprisingly I did bounce back. But I did learn that it is never the cheatees fault...it is the cheaters. And if he claims that she is such a snob..then he shouldve just broke up with her instead. Really he was just being greedy/ selfish/ disrepectsful, etc.
