New On TV: Oprah's 'E! True Hollywood Story'

Posted Oct 14th 2008 10:10AM by Bridget Bland
Filed under: Entertainment Newswire, Entertainment

By Bridget Bland, BlackVoices.com

She's amassed eighteen Emmy Awards, been chosen as one of Time magazine's "Most Influential People in the World" five times over and been at the top of Forbes "Richest Americans List" numerous times.

We know her net worth is currently at two and a half billion dollars and would like to think that we know Oprah Winfrey's life story inside and out.

A little black girl from rural Mississippi is abused. She grows up promiscuous and gets pregnant. After a miscarriage, she is shipped to live with her father who provides strict discipline, which results in the teenager excelling in school. She wins beauty pageants and transitions to working as a television news reporter and anchor in Baltimore. She gets her own morning talk show in Chicago and competes with Phil Donahue. Soon thereafter she effortlessly catapults to become the most successful talk show host of all-time and the first African-American woman billionaire.

But that's not it.

There seems to be more to learn about the reserved media mogul -- and some of it is shared for the first time on 'Oprah: The E! True Hollywood Story,' debuting this Oct. 17, 2008 at 9 PM on E!.

Oprah Hair Transformation

This was Oprah in 1986, the same year 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' entered national syndication. Oprah brought her style of emotional reporting to the main stream wearing a short hair style with feathered bangs. Winfrey's look said "working mother" not "power broker." (Photo: AP)

Perhaps inspired by shocking '80s hair styles, Oprah teased her hair to towering heights in 1987. By this time, her show was the highest rated talk show in television history. (Photo: Getty Images)

Fast forward to 1996: Almost ten years later, Winfrey's look is considerably more stylish. By this time she has established her media dominance, becoming the third woman in entertainment history to found her own production facility, Harpo Studios. (Photo: Chris Kasson, AP)

In the year 2000, Oprah began to take her hair to new lengths, while keeping a demure sensibility. This was also the year she launched O, The Oprah Magazine. (Photo: Kevin Winter, Getty Images)

By 2004, Oprah took her magazine game to the next level with the introduction of O at Home. Her hair was spunkier and younger, with layers that finally gave it a modern silhouette. (Photo: Carlo Allegri, Getty Images)

Oprah also began exploring more feminine hair styles in 2004. She looked almost girlish in chin-length curls as she received the United Nations Association's Global Humanitarian Action Award that year. (Photo: Getty Images)

Winfrey finally began looking more like a woman of power in 2005. She softened a severe bob by bending the ends under slightly for a sophisticated finish. (Photo: Getty Images)

At the 60th annual Tony Awards later in 2006, Oprah seemed to take two steps back with her hair, perhaps looking to keep it simple. Her hair lacked volume and shine, but at least it looked like it was all real! (Photo: Seth Wenig, AP)

In a look almost inspired by Marilyn Monroe, Oprah wore a softer bob in early 2006. (Photo: Paul Hawthorne, Getty Images)

In 2007, Oprah often wore soft curls. While not her first attempt at rocking this hair style, the more recent rendition looked more natural. (Photo: Frazer Harrison, Getty Images)

Some of Winfrey's closest friends, including her best friend Gayle King, celebrity chef/ and talk show host Rachael Ray, 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' special correspondent, Lisa Ling, and superstar singer Alicia Keys are a few boldfaced names offering insight into the life and legacy of the multi-media powerhouse.

Shortly after helping Ray to launch her own talk show, reports surfaced that Winfrey and the Food Network star were in a tiff about the direction of Ray's show. In the new E! show, Ray sets the record straight, calling the rumors, "complete garbage and utterly ridiculous," adding, "I've never feuded with Oprah. I've never disagreed with Oprah. I've never not taken Oprah's advice 'cause my momma ain't raise no dummy."

Ling offers an intimate look at how vulnerable Winfrey was when her beloved dog, Sophie passed away. Ling reveals that Winfrey had a true breakdown causing show producers to halt production after a video montage of her late dog over the years.

When Winfrey speaks, America listens. The 'True Hollywood' show highlights some of the most controversial shows she has done, including the court battle that she won against cattle farmers in Texas after speaking out against beef, as well as the ups and downs of her very public weight battle. It also touches on how her viewers donated $15 million to post-Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. But, also how criticized she was after endorsing Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama.

The show also features never-before-seen footage from inside the Johannesburg courtroom where dorm matron, Tiny Virginia Mokopo -- of Oprah's Leadership Academy for Girls -- went on trial for alleged abuse. Mokopo has pleaded not guilty and the case has been postponed until later this month.

'Black Enterprise' magazine's Sonia Alleyne reflects on Oprah's legacy in the 'True Hollywood' show, adding, "Living a life of service for Oprah is the reason she's here. It's the reason she exists."

King, Winfrey's best friend and confidante, echos that sentiment, saying that she doesn't think that Oprah should be counted out in 2010 when her show's syndication contract ends.

"I know she still so loves doing what she's doing," she says. "She's never done anything for the money, but she's in a stage in her life where if she wanted to go to her home in California and sit under a tree and read a book for the rest of her life she certainly could do that."

"But, the truth of the matter is Oprah loves working," she adds.

With her new television network, The Oprah Winfrey Network, OWN, launching Fall of 2009, we're betting King knows her best friend well.

1. I have always admired Orpah. I'm not always the biggest fan of her show but you got to give it to her for being a trailblazer. She has done a lot for a lot of people, so it just goes to show you that no matter how much you do, you will still be critized by some.

2. OPRAH HAS GONE THRU TRIALS AND CHALLENGES JUST LIKE MOST OF US HAVE. THE LORD KNOWS WHO TO GIVE WHAT TO. HE KNOWS WHOSE GONNA BE A GOOD STEWART OF HIS BLESSINGS. SHE IS A GREAT EXAMPLE BUT WE MUST REMEMBER THAT SHE IS HUMAN AND SUBJECT TO LIKE PASSIONS AS "WE" ARE.

3. Obesity is a respector of no one; no matter how rich, or how poor one is, wealth cannot shield you from this all-prevasive disease. Additionally, obesity is a fight that only the overweight person can fight. It doesn't matter how many trainers, dieticians, nutritionists, etc. that you can afford, the individual still has to make the personal investment to select the less desirable (albeit slimming) food choices and to exercise: move more; eat less. Changing one's lifestyle is not easy to do. Oprah is not a pig, but rather, a woman who is on a mission to try to be healthy. Sometimes, she is on target, and sometimes -- not so much, but the remarkable thing is that she never gives up. Many African American celebrities boast about how thrilled they are that they are obese, singing the praises of their lumps and bumps. There is a serious obesity epidemic plaguing African-Americans, and we cannot afford to glamorize this issue. I give Oprah credit that she knows that obesity leads to life threatening diseases, i.e., heart disease, strokes, hypertension, diabetes, etc., and not only does she know this, but she shares pertinent information with her viewers; methodoly on how to combat obesity. She brings national health experts on her show to explain the damaging effects of sedentary lifestyles, and offers positive options. I love, love, love Oprah. So what if she is on a perennial slippery slope of yo-yo dieting, and sometimes she wins, and sometimes she loses. (At least she keeps trying). She is like the average American woman -- sometimes a size 8, and other times, a size 14. Again, I cannot stress enough that this woman owns up to the devastating effects of obesity. While so many others get on national television, inviting the viewing audience and media to kiss their Big, Black Bums.

It seems to me that America encourages black women to be fat, and to die young. Almost every time that a black woman is cast to portray a mother on television, she is a grotesquely obese woman. Think about it... (Look at the television sitcoms over the past two decades, and notice that 90% of the black actresses portraying mothers were obese). Even Disney's show "That's So Raven", which was targeted to a very young demographic, selected all overweight black youth. Raven, herself, is overweight; the boy who played her brother is overweight, the boy who played her best friend is overweight, her aunt is overweight, and her father is overweight. Every black on that show, except in this case, the mother was obese. Conversely, if you look at "Hannah Montana", all of the youth cast on that show are slim and trim... Why are these images of obesity being projected to our youth? The age for diabetes within the African American race has decreased alarminly. More and more pre-adolescents are being diagnosed with this dreadful disease.

Think about all the obese women portraying African American mothers. This is an image that is perpetuated in media, and fostered by African American celebrities who just don't want to lose weight, so they hug their big bums and claim that they are sexy. Come on... you know who I'm talking about. Perhaps the Casting Directors are experiencing deja vu for days of yore, when Mammies suckled little white boys and wiped their snotty noses.

It is time that we stop accepting obesity as something that is sexy within our race. (Now, don't get me wrong, I know many, many overweight women who are extremely sexy and healthy. They exercise, and dress appropriately for their size, but the operative word is that they keep moving, and they do watch what they eat.) Unfortunately, most overweight women are unhealthy.

At least Oprah offers us information, so that we can make informed decisions about whether, or not, we want to transform our lifestyles into lifestyles that encourage good health and longevity.

4. Sidebar: For years, Queen Latifah has touted her BIG BONE LOVELINESS; and now, she is the spokeswoman for Jenny Craig. Because she was so adamant about the loveliness of her largeness, she made Jenny Craig create a campaign that emphasized "health", so that she would not look like a hypocrite who suddenly felt the need to lose weight. Now, of course, in my opinion, Queen is truly one of the larger women who personifies beauty, grace and health, but even with this opinion, Queen is talking from both sides of her mouth because if she really did not feel that she needed to shed a few pounds, she wouldn't have signed up to endorse the Jenny Craig brand...

Another Big Girl who proudly toasted her curves is Tyra. She screamed and cried on television, inviting us to kiss her big, black, bum; and then, proceeded to secretly diet the excess weight off. If you look at the Tyra who told us to kiss her bum, and look at Tyra today, you will notice that she has lost approximately 20 pounds. Tyra never embraced her obesity. The tears were for herself. She was so used to being applauded for her beauty, and now all of a sudden, she had a nation hailing her as "Miss Piggy", and she lashed out, but the proof is in the pudding. If she thought that she looked fine, she would not have gone on a diet to lose upwards to 20 pounds...

Another professor of "Fat is All That" is Monique. She, too, recently lost weight, and paraded her behind around like she was Naomi Campbell -- as proud as could be...

It appears that all of the overweight celebrities espouse the beauty of fat publicly, but when offer an opportunity to lose the weight, they jump at it, and when they lose the weight, they glow with pride.

Bermudia at 3:18PM on Oct 15th 2008

5. Oprah is a pig, totally. Rich yes but; still a pig. That pig has enough money to hire a personal trainer, cook, diet experts, and even her own fitness club yet; she is still a fat pig. Her boyfriend's family refuses to except her because; she is too dark. They don't give a rat's ass how much money she has; she is still too dark. Mad TV says he is gay and makes fun of him all the time. They could not say it if they could not prove it. I am burned out on Oprah but; I do thank her for supporting President Obama.

7. I LOVE OPRAH WINDFREY. I THINK SHE IS A VERY TRUTHFUL WOMAN AND LOVING PERSON WHO GIVES FROM THE HEART.PEOPLE HAVE SAID THAT SHE CATERS MORE TO WHITE PEOPLE THAN HER OWN KIND, BUT I THINK THAT'S JUST JEALOUS MINDED PEOPLE WHO WANT WHAT SHE HAS BUT NOT WILLING TO WORK FOR IT.I GOT A CHANCE TO SEE HER SHOW IN PERSON, AND I WAS REALLY GLAD I GOT IN, BECAUSE HER GUEST THAT DAY WAS THE HANDSOME MAN DENZEL WASHINGTON. I COULDN'T CONTAIN MYSELF. BUT OPRAH IS THE BEST, SHE HAS THE BIG NAME STARS AND TOPICS PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT AND SHE GIVES BACK TO HER PEOPLE AND ALL OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. I'M GLAD SHE'S HERE IN CHICAGO SHE'S OUR STAR.

8. Oprah is a New Age Witch (literally). I just heard an interview she did with a demon on youtube, where she agrees that she has some of the same powers as the demon does. Oprah is dangerous and deadly, but most of the black community will not care or admit this until you see bodies (mostly black bodies)laid out dead from poison Kool-Aide. WAKE UP! Money does not make everything right. Please don't be a blind negro, wake up!!!!

Bella at 10:56AM on Oct 16th 2008

9. It is sad that some people have nothing to do but hate successful people. What is this world coming to.

I may not have what Oprah have, but, I be happy for her. Life is to short to blind to ingorants.

For all you people who write this ugly thing about her

Marsha at 12:46PM on Oct 16th 2008

10. Bella you know what amazing you believe YOUTUBE now that's scary that people put so much trust in the YOUTUBE now these are the people that must be watch
YOUTUBE is full of lies and bull and yet you come her to demean Oprah because some-nonsense on YOUTUBE, get yourself the real help that's needed. You can't find a better person than Oprah Winfrey.Patricia you are pretty very close in your assessment when it comes to black people or just people in general.. As I work the OBama Campaign I watch too see how man african Americans in my part of the country is willing to give 1 or just 2 hours of their time to support OBAMA and it's looks really dense but white america is out there again fighting for their future and their children's future when will black people wake the hell up.. Most of you don't do much give the campaign an hour and see what a difference it will make in your life.. Oprah is one of the best.

Blacklace101 at 12:47PM on Oct 16th 2008

11. Billy Springer, now that was certainly the voice of a devil... Oprah is a wonderful person. Yes Obesity is a problem in most communities not just the black community. I personally believe Oprah has a done a wonderful job in maintaining weight. Oprah is a perfect example of how we as women can continue to learn how to put us first and make sure we do what is needed to keep our lifes, body and mind on track... Oprah has done more to help people than all that criticize her so much. The problem is most people can't stand to see someone else making changes because they are so afraid of changes their self so they take offense when other's making changes... I wished this recently when I told what I thought was a close friend of mines that I found the man that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with and she just seemed so negative and at that moment I realized that there are very few people that really care about someone else happiness. Oprah keep doing God's will and those that just sit and have nothing but something nasty, critical and just plain stupid that shall pass too.

Blacklace101 at 12:48PM on Oct 16th 2008

12. Ignorance is what plaguing this country as we speak… It’s truly unfortunate that you believe such a horrible thing about a very blessed woman but again the world is full of people with your mindset. You mindset is what’s killing our society and what’s worst you are just jealous that she’s a brilliant and successful black woman. She’s been able to capture so many because of her heart not her money.
Patricia I am afraid to say but you are very correct when you say that many are so jealous they can’t fathom someone giving and giving and never asking for anything in return because God has them covered.
Oprah is a great person…
Bella, I would suggest professionally that you seek the medical attention that’s needed to
Help you determine reality from bullshit whenever someone could believe that YOUTUBE is a reputable source this where we must all take a stand against this poison that ruining the minds of so many.

I don’t have idols but I truly admire the person in Oprah Winfrey she’s one of the smartest women that I know and I wish her continued success.

Blacklace101 at 1:00PM on Oct 16th 2008

13. Billy you need to seek help for your mental problems also... Just because she's not skin and bones white folks believe everyone should be dripping in bones. No meat at all on the body which they believe is a true to life body.. I don't believe black folks believe or see that same way. Yes Oprah like so many has struggled with her weight however I believe she's doing a great job with maintaining..

Blacklace101 at 1:03PM on Oct 16th 2008

14. I think she is a racist. professional BS artist that has gotten rich off stupid white women.Supporting Obama is not a feather in her cap.

wesley mizell at 1:24PM on Oct 16th 2008

15. I dont have time to watch Oprah like I use too
but I still like her and would support her in what ever she does...
