Presidential Debate No 2 - Open Thread

Posted Oct 7th 2008 10:00AM by Branden Cobb
Filed under: BlackSpin, Elections, Barack Obama, John McCain, News

Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee was the setting for the second meeting of Senators John McCain and Barack Obama; and the location wasn't the only difference. The spirited debate started off with a Town Hall forum that quickly unraveled into a free-for-all, and ended with heart-tugging speeches from each of them about how they have lived the American dream. However, if you were paying attention, there was something eerily unsettling about McCain's rhetoric. Oh, he had a classic line tonight about voters paying attention to a candidate's record rather than rhetoric, yet his choice of words shouldn't be ignored.

McCain's tone quickly shifted from that of an honorable statesman to a grouchy, and sometimes, condescending speaker when talking about his rival Obama. Instead of addressing his fellow congressman by name, McCain stooped to calling him "that one," a remark that immediately generated buzz on the Internet according to television correspondents. As if that wasn't insulting enough, he also fell back on the phrase "he doesn't understand."

The major distinction between this interaction and last one was that Obama didn't take the swipes lying down, interrupting moderator Tom Brokaw so he could fire back and say he that did understand the issue. Later on, Obama even got in some jabs of his own. He mocked McCain, saying the "Straight Talk Express lost a wheel on that one," referring not only to the bus that McCain travels, but to his inaccurate portray of Obama and his leadership qualities, It was an attempt to assert that he has a name that should be respected and it is Barack Obama.

1. McCain: My policies stink, my behavior has been erratic, and my poll numbers have been steadily dropping, so, as an act of desperation, I'm just going to do as much as I can to distract the people from those sad fact, with fear and smear tactics, and hope that they are stupid enough to be fooled.

Obama: I'm pretty confident that I have this whole thing locked up, with a month to go until V-day. So, I'm just going to be cool like Fonzie, and not play McCain's ignoble game, and instead just speak to the people like they were over at my house for dinner.

Tom Brokaw: As moderator, I will be the consummate professional and not exhibit any bias whatsoever, so you can ignore the fact that I previously served as a liaison between NBC and the McCain campaign to diffuse conservative animosity against the network. And I encouraged NBC News to modify the anchor duties of the MSNBC hosts Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews on election night and on nights when there were presidential debates, because they both showed unabashed anti-McCain sentiments.

The American Left: McCain is an a-hole and I pity the fools who vote him into office.

The American Right: Obama is a terrorist and should be "eliminated."

The American Middle: This is all complete theatrical B.S.

Foreign Countries: Hahahahahaha... those Americans and their ridiculous electoral process... hahahaha... they make us laugh... hahahaha... what a joke that country has become... hahahaha...

God: This is certainly not what I expected would happen when I created these pathetic earthlings. Maybe I'll send some hail storms down there and cause havoc so that they can open their eyes and WAKE UP!

4. MCCAIN AND SARAH PALIN NEED TO STOP TRYING TO SMEAR SEN. OBAMA AND GET ON WITH THE PEOPLE'S HURTS, HARMS, FEARS, AND DISASTERS. I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT WHO IS FRIENDS WITH WHOM OR HOW MCCAIN HAS BEEN SO TWO FACED IN HIS POLITICAL CAREER. ALL I WANT TO HEAR IS HOW ARE YOU GOING TO HELP THE PEOPLE GET HOMES, GET OUR TROOPS HOME WITH HOMES AND HEALTH CARE FOR OUR TROOPS AND THE PEOPLE. HOW YOU ARE GOING TO CREATE DECENT PAYING JOBS AFFORDABLE FOR THE PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO LIVE. OWN OUR OWN HOMES, SEND OUR CHILDREN TO EXCELLENT SCHOOLS, RETIRE RESPECTFULLY, AND SAVE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND GRAND CHILDREN. THESE ARE THE ISSUES I CARE ABOUT HEARING NOT WHAT IS IN THE PASTS OF THOSE RUNNING FOR ELECTION!! AND THE ONLY REASON WHY SEN. OBAMA IS RETALIATING IS SIMPLY BECAUSE HE HAS AND IS RETALIATING TO KEEP HIS NAME CLEAR!! SO MCCAIN STOP TRYING TO SMEAR THIS MAN AND GET ON WITH THE BUSINESS OF THE DAY.

7. Watching John McCain is like watching Santa Claus (literally, especially with that grey hair of his) handing you gifts & telling you tales about his friends: the tooth fairy, the Easter Bunny etc. This is so ridiculous & condescending, it’s actually offensive. This dunce rhetoric might work with his usual ignorant republican crowd but certainly not the “gen pop.” Why is he so generic & non-specific?
Now I know why he picked Sarah Pailin! They should both pack their bags & head home, this race is over.

Fierce at 10:07PM on Oct 7th 2008

8. Excuse me! McCain needs to get his hearing checked. He kept saying Obama said the U.S.A. would attack Pakistan. He seems to think the rest of us can't hear. He has a SERIOUS problem. Listening to him makes my stomach turn. YUCK!!!

RC at 10:37PM on Oct 7th 2008

9. I am so sick of Mccain, trying to talk that foolishness. he is for hisself and thats it. Sarah is a fool she hasnt even formed her own opinions on issues how is she going to be VP. I am sick of all these people trying to take shots at Obama, and Joe! Do they not have anything else to do?

Iamwat UNV at 10:38PM on Oct 7th 2008

10. McCain just refused to shake Obama's hand at the end of the debate. He pat Obama on the back, however when Obama extended his hand McCain ignored Obama's extended hand and had his wife shake hands with Obama, instead. MaCain is one RUDE person. I wouldn't want him representing our country as president. He has no class.

Obama won the debate!!! YES!!!

RC at 10:42PM on Oct 7th 2008

11. I am still upset with the candidates. There is too much mudsling. Senator McCain did too much blaming and not enough of explaining what he would do. We need knowledge and someone who cares. Senator Obama did well with backing up the mud towards him. Senator Obama also did well with explaining how and showing care and concern for Americans.

Angelia at 10:54PM on Oct 7th 2008

12. What was with the Mccain comment "That one over other"

floridian4Obama at 11:04PM on Oct 7th 2008

13. McCain & Pailin have Attention deficit disorder (ADD). It seems McCain theme tonight was “I am bipartisan.” I can work with the other side. What did he do at the end? He refused to shake Obama’s hand! Boy did he blow that message, after all that trouble!
This is what happens when you make stupid people memorize stuff, without understanding what it means. I feel sorry for their handlers!

Fierce at 11:18PM on Oct 7th 2008

14. Tonight Sen. McCain dropped the bombshell of the election promising to buy out my bad morgage and allow me to renegotiate my mortgage at the diminished price of my home. The Senator has made me and offer I can't refuse. I was about to give up the house because cause suddenly it had diminished in value by $250,000 yet I was stuck with a mortgage payment based on the original value of my home. This is a no brainer. McCaim wins my support hands down and I am ready to carry him into the White House on my shoulders. You brothers and sisters out there who have walked away from your homes had better find a way to snick back in. I held out. I had a feeling a change was gonna come! Come on McCain! Black America stop being an Obama addict and wake up and smell the roses McCain is handing out. McCain is the man with the plan!

15. My family and I have always been republicans, but with the economic hardships that we have experienced in these last six years, we will be voting democratic this time because we need a change. Things have got to get financially better for us. Many Americans have been hurting for a long time, and this republican administration had not paid any attention to us low or moderate income people. Now during the debate tonight I heard him mention for the first time during the two debates that Americans are hurting. Health care is a necessity for my family. My son recently started having seizures, and my husband and I can't afford the better medication that the doctor initially prescribed for him, so we had to settle for the one that's affordable for us, which will ultimately weaken his bones. When the Clinton administration tried so hard to get everyone health care, is McCain one of the republicans that voted against it just to be spiteful toward the democrats. I've been voting republican, but the problems that they have gotten this country into with their constant thoughts of war, and the deregulation, and lack of attention to our economy, they got to step aside and let someone else do a better job.
Another thing, regardless of your political affiliation, lying and rudeness is unacceptable. Morality should never be abandoned for your desires.
And McCain said he won't raise taxes --- yeah right. When George Bush Sr. was campaigning for president he said, "Read my lips. No more taxes!" Then as soon as he was elected he immediately raised taxes. I think its time for every republican to look at the daily issues that are affecting all of us as republicans and democrats with this messed up economy and vote for someone who's going to do what's best for our families, like the people in Michigan.
