Style Spotter Spots: M.I.A.'s Clothing Line

Posted Oct 6th 2008 12:12PM by Esther Dixon
Filed under: Lifestyle, Style Spotter, Life and Style

I know what you are going to say: Another celeb, with another clothing line? Well yes and why not! Ecclectic musician, M.I.A. (aka Maya Arulpragasm) is the latest celebrity to join the fashionable bandwagon of celebs with their own clothing line. The Sri Lankan artist has designed a loud, vibrant collection that mirrors her fast paced, beat-pounding musical style.

The collection includes bomber jackets, leggings and T-shirts in bold hues and graphic prints, which is all very reflective of M.I.A.'s own style. Besides being the stand out girl in M.I.A. clothing, there is also one other added bonus. "With my stuff, because everything's really bright, if you lose it or someone steals it, you can see it from miles away and you can be like, 'Oy! Give me my shirt back!'"

The College Survival Guide

    A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.

    Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.

    Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.

    Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.

    MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.

    Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age

    Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.

    Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.

    Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.

    Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

1. For some reason, I have the sneaking suspicion this chick won't be around come this time next year (a la fad of the moment: that '80s throwback sound/look)... this is right up there with those harem pants for me from a couple posts ago... and with that said, my thoughts on MIA's clothing line... "Can't Touch This!"

3. Uh since this is BLAcK vOIcES why not plug a Black female designer????I guess that would make too much SENSE

4. I think the clothes are fun.

LEE at 2:00PM on Oct 11th 2008

5. I think people that have a sense of crazy style and uniqueness about themselves will love her clothing to try something new and be different from OTHERS. Everyone else who has something negative to say are very closeminded and HATERS... She doin her thang dont hate CONGRADULATE... They just want her stuff to look the same as everyone elses and its not cause she the sh.. and like she say NOONE HAS A SWAGGER LIKE HER!! like what.

6. "All I wanna do is (bang, bang, bang, bang) and a...(empty clip)/(cash register rings) TAKE YA MONEY!"

Lranee at 3:54PM on Oct 11th 2008

7. Adrie I'm right wit u. Who cares if she's not Black. Black Voices is a site that encompasses every hue of minorties. Just because she's unique and not Black is not a reason to single her out. Thats what I love about us...we see the beauty in EVERYBODY. Any African American who doesn't is somewhat ignorant and hipocritical considering the things we went through. She's doing her thing and as long as that's something she's passionate about- then others with a similar dream will Big her up. I know I do. Her style is different and her music is definately a movement if you know anything about her. M.I.A keep doing your thang. And to the HATERS...try opening your mind to something new for once. Damn!

TheTruth at 5:05PM on Oct 11th 2008

8. THAT IS GRATE SHE IS MAKEING MONEY BUT SHE SHOULD STAY IN HER MUSIC BECAUSE.SHE IS NO FASHION DESINGER I HOPE SHE WONT MAKE IT HER CAREE BECAUSE SHE WILL BE BROKE.IF SHE TRY'S TO MAKE A LIVEING WITH THAT CLOTHING LINE GOOD LUCK SHE WILL NEED IT LOL.

Linda at 5:51PM on Oct 11th 2008

9. If MIA wants to wear and design that type of clothing, that's her business. So 80'ish to me. Not my STYLE. I wish she could have came up with something more CREATIVE and NEW? I like the beat in her song but not the lyrics to the song. Even though, her song is edited in the video? In my opinion, I don't think JACKIN people for money and things is POSITIVE for the young generation or really anybody? These hard times, I don't find this video FUNNY! "MIA, PLEASE FLY BACK TO YOUR PLANET ON PAPER PLANES".

Jezznot RITE????? at 6:40PM on Oct 11th 2008

10. i think the clothing line is hot funky and hip op rockiesh. i know you will catch me wearing them. so let the haters hate gurl you doing yo thang..

tawanda at 8:10PM on Oct 11th 2008

11. I love Mia. I also love her songs as well! She is one of my favorite female singers, especially female singer in : Dance Music.

Nikki at 9:55PM on Oct 11th 2008

12. a lot of people don't know that m.i.a. was a visual artist before she became a music artist, so this fashion line is just another form of expressing herself, so more power to her and all other colored peoples throughout the world who're doing their thing. you can't tell me that if you were given the chance to do something (else) that you love, that you wouldn't take it, so don't hate on her. i think she's awesome and i loved her music waaay before "paper planes" got played on the radio lol

b. brown at 11:21PM on Oct 13th 2008

13. Yeah, Style Child, I mean, she's only been out for 4 years now *Eye Roll*.

Capricorn12 at 4:00PM on Oct 21st 2008

14. Ooh I cant stand them ol' ignorant "middle passage" negroes (especially using caps.)So let me break some shit down

@ her career; MIA is very sucessfully i believe she had a dance hall single dating back to the 90s. You might be right about her not being around shes preggers and retired!!

@ her clothing line; I love it that the clothing line is like a tribute to blog. Its beautiful how kente clothe inspired designs are chic . Shes rrepresenting the designs of your people's tribe that you'd be too uppity to rock on your own.

@ the music: please stop critizing this chick's lyrics. aint tied any ones hand behind their back and made people listen
