Open Letter: Hollywood Heavy Hitters Send Direct Message To Tyler Perry

Posted Oct 6th 2008 1:11AM by Jawn Murray
Filed under: BV Buzz, Entertainment

By Jawn Murray, BlackVoices.com

Sidney PoitierWhile film and TV mogul Tyler Perry partied with a who's who of Black star power at the opening of his Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta this weekend, the Writers Guild Association sent an open letter to the creator of the infamous Madea character and the letter was signed by some of the most prominent show runners in Hollywood.

BV Buzz reported on Friday that the gospel playwright had come under fire for unfair labor practices and the WGA filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), claiming that Perry had four writers from 'House of Payne' (Kellie Griffin, Christopher Moore, Teri Brown-Jackson and Lamont Ferrell) unlawfully fired because they wanted the union involved in their contract negotiations with Perry's company.

(Read 'Tyler Perry Protested: Man Behind Madea Accused Of Unfair Labor Practices' for details.)

Despite the shocking news about Perry terminating writers after refusing to pay minimum industry rates, health care, pension and residuals making headlines at the start of the weekend, the man behind 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman' and 'Why Did I Get Married' hosted the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, Will Smith and Patti LaBelle at his new studio complex.

Tyler Perry & date at Tyler Perry Studios opening

The 39-year-old New Orleans native, who has become one of modern Hollywood's most wealthiest moguls after allegedly being homeless and sleeping in his car, purchased 30 acres of land and a facility that once housed the Delta Air Lines' business center to open his multimillion-dollar TV and film studio.

While Perry celebrated his rags to riches story during the two-day complex opening, the WGA issued their open letter and the likes of Shonda Rhimes ('Grey's Anatomy'/'Private Practice'), Marc Cherry ('Desperate Housewives'), Tina Fey ('30 Rock'), Steve Peterman ('Hannah Montana'), Rene Balcer ('Law & Order'/'Law & Order: Criminal Intent'), Warren Hutcherson ('Everybody Hates Chris'/'The Bernie Mac Show') and 66 other show runners united to speak out against his actions.

Below you'll find the reprinted letter in its entirety.

*****

Dear Tyler Perry,

This season, scripted television programming will consist of about 150 shows employing 1,200 writers.

Of that universe, 149 shows and 1,193 writers will produce shows covered by the Writers Guild's Minimum Basic Agreement. The MBA guarantees minimum compensation, residuals, health coverage, and pension in addition to other benefits.

The big exceptCast of 'House of Payne'ion? Tyler Perry's 'House of Payne" and the seven writers who, collectively, played a key role in producing over 100 episodes of one of television's most successful sitcoms.

Right now, these seven writers are in a struggle with you, the producer of 'House of Payne,' to extend Guild coverage to the show. This past Monday, after months of negotiations with the Guild, four of the writers were abruptly and illegally fired because of their efforts to secure the same minimums and benefits as their peers.

We all know that producing television is a tough and uncertain business. But some things are simply not acceptable.

We have a simple ask – reinstate the writers and make a fair deal with WGA.

Respectfully,

Six Degrees of Tyler Perry

    Six Degrees of Tyler Perry
In just three years, Tyler Perry has become the toast of Hollywood. Could you name another director black or white who can boast of having released six feature movie projects within a three year period? Nope. Not only did the New Orleans native write all of the storylines for the films, he starred in four. Combined, five of the films have grossed upwards of $250 million worldwide, some within budgets below $6 million. And with the major money train also comes associating with some of the biggest names in and out of the entertainment business. BlackVoices.com takes an introspective look at how a former homeless man turned chit'lin circuit theater czar has connections to the likes of Michael Jackson, Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston and Will Smith, to name a few. Check out Six Degrees of Tyler Perry.

    Tyler Perry
The best-selling playwright turned Hollywood hot-shot (real name: Emmitt R. Perry, Jr.) was born Sept. 14, 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

    Ray Nagin
Another New Orleans native, Ray Nagin, Jr. was elected into the office of Mayor of the Crescent City on March 6, 2002.

    Labelle
Known as the music capitol of the Gulf Coast, New Orleans was also the setting for 'Lady Marmalade,' a hit song from 1970s glam-soul trio Labelle, comprised of Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx and Sara Dash.

    Lenny Kravitz
Modern day rock & roll demigod Lenny Kravitz is one of the top-notch talents chosen to produce Labelle's long-awaited reunion album, 'Back to Now,' due out later this year via Verve Records.

    Lisa Bonet
'The Cosby Show' and 'A Different World' star Lisa Bonet eloped with Lenny Kravitz in November 1987. Their daughter Zoe Isaballe Kravitz was born the next year. The couple separated in 1991.

    Gary Dourdan
'C.S.I.' actor Gary Dourdan played Cree Summer's character's love interest Shazza Zulu on the NBC sitcom 'A Different World,' which was originally developed as a spin-off vehicle for Lisa Bonet. The Philadelphia native appeared on 13 episodes from 1991 to 1992.

    Janet Jackson
Gary Dourdan also played the love interest of Janet Jackson in the music video for her chart-topping ballad, 'Again,' in 1993.

    Tyler Perry
Janet Jackson starred in the lead role of Tyler Perry's box office smash, 'Why Did I Get Married?' The twice divorced pop star won an NAACP Image Award for her performance.

    Ruben Cannon
One of the most respected executives in Hollywood, Ruben Cannon has served as a casting director of film and TV projects dating all the way back to 1977. He co-executive produced Tyler Perry's 'Why Did I Get Married?'

2. Can you say saurrrrrrry? Shape up Brother Tyler, shape Up. African Americans should understand the struggle if no one else can. DO THE RIGHT THING!!! Pay the PEOPLE.

Sharper at 8:30AM on Oct 7th 2008

3. People must understand that unions are not always in the best interest of film studios. Tyler Perry has opened up the first major black film studio ever in this country and all he is getting is nothing but problems. In order for him to succeed he must keep costs down and hire quality writers. Hollywood's films would cost less if it were not for the unions. I understand writers needs to be fairly compensated but they do not have the right to tell Tyler Perry how to run his show. They should be blessed to be working in the first place. Hollywood rarely hire black writers. I hope Tyler Perry helps rewrite the rules for the film industry. Tyler Perry is not in Hollywood, but Atlanta. It is a different ballgame. He does not have to follow the hollywood model.

4. I know that it is more to what we are hearing, because Tyler Perry comes from hardship and i know that he would pay and be fair. I think its all (Haters) Keep Moving Mr. Perry and i love everything thing you do.

5. THE ONE THING TYLER MUST REMEMBER IS THAT THERE ARE LEVELS OF LIVING AND EVERY LEVEL HAS DIFFERENT RULES. AS YOU GO UP IN LEVELS, BE PREPARED TO UPGRADE YOUR THINKING TO MATCH THE LEVEL YOU ARE ON...HOW HIGH DO YOU WANT TO GO? WELL WITH EVERY LEVEL YOU MUST MAKE THE FINANCIAL TRANSFORMATION. IF YOU WANT BILLIONS BE PREPARED TO SPEND MILLIONS...YOU CANT BE THE ONLY RICH MAN IN THE POT...YOU MUST ALSO MAKE THE PEOPLE RICH THAT HELP MAKE YOU RICH . TYLER YOU MUST GIVE UP SOMETHING TO GET SOMETHING! . YOU ARE ON A NEW LEVEL NOW, AND THESE ARE NOT PEOPLE FROM THE HOMELESS WRITERS ASSOCIATION.(LOL)
LEARN THE RULES AND REGULATIONS AND STRATEGY'S FOR EACH LEVEL THAT YOU APPROACH SO THAT YOU DON'T GET SUED. DO YOUR RESEARCH NEXT TIME BEFORE YOU ENTER THE LEVELS AND KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU MUST"GIVE UP SOMETHING TO GET SOMETHING!"

6. Don't HATE on Mr. Perry....he is doing something HOLLYWOOD wouldn't even dream off doing---and that is hiring and doing the RIGHT thing for some/many BLACK artists in the entertainmennt field. Funny now that he is making all this money every1 is noticing that he is out selling evrybody and with a wide audience....shame but true!

CJ at 9:31AM on Oct 7th 2008

7. Obviously the ones speaking out against the black writers or unions don't write or have no clue how the system works in Hollywood. Unions are in place to make sure the pot is equally stirred between writers, actors and studios. Just because they're black they shouldn't be happy to take just anything. That's what's wrong with us. Some of us are just too happy to be let in Massa's house for some water instead of demanding a meal well deserved. No one's downing Tyler Perry for doing well, most people including myself love that he's succeeding in Hollywood but now he has the money to properly pay his employees. He's not doing chicken circuit plays anymore so he can't pay chicken circuit prices. The writers are toward the bottom of the pile when it comes to being paid in Hollywood but I don't see anyone complaining about the actors at the top makes $10M/$20M a flick. No writers = no shows = no one working!

RDR at 9:49AM on Oct 7th 2008

8. This is a buisness people! This is a film studio. In order for Tyler Perry to grow he has to keep compensation reasonable. He just opened up the studio. It is unfair to ask him for the same compensation as another studio like Dreamworks, Fox, MGM, etc. The major studios have been around for decades. It is historic what Perry has accomplished and blacks who have an opportunity to work for Perry should be grateful and support him trying to be a dominate force in the film industry.

Lisa Hampton at 9:56AM on Oct 7th 2008

9. RDR, as a former film student, I do understand how the industry works. I understand in a film's budget are above the line(actors and directors, writers) and below the line(production crew, etc). Above the line are the most costliest in the budget, but they are the most important. The actors bring in the audience and the producer and director make sure the film is completed successfully. Making sure you keep your budgets in line,is important in the film industry. Spike Lee has been in the industry now for decades and he has never done what Tyler Perry has accomplished. Tyler Perry understands numbers. Just because Tyler Perry is grossing alot of money, doesnt mean he is not using it to reinvest. I think it is so unfair to trash this man.

Lisa Hampton at 10:15AM on Oct 7th 2008

10. Lisa,

Trash him? No, I did not. Wouldn't ever do that to a person of color trying to be successful in this world. My point is he has to understand that these people are working in their best interest by working with the union to get a deal. It didn't say they were asking for some astronomical amount of money. A writer would be a fool to go into salary negotiations without proper representation. We don't know how much or if he was trying to lowball these writers. Tyler is free to reinvest as much as he wants but these writers aren't his family, they're his employees, professional writers, not new writers just coming out the gate. If by their writing, it's making him richer, they should be fairly compensated.

RDR at 10:45AM on Oct 7th 2008

11. Those of you who think that folks are hating on Tyler did not read the letter correctly. The writers are asking for MINIMUM compensation. Many of the TV studios have over 10 shows on the air. Tyler has 2 shows. Those writers deserve the respect that are given to other writers in this BUSINESS! If the show goes off the air, these writers have nothing. If they get inured or sick, they have no safety net. All they are asking is minimum compensation. I bet that the cameramen, grips, director, set designer, lighting director are covered. If one person is covered, then everyone should be covered.

JAZZMAN11 at 11:18AM on Oct 7th 2008

12. Tyler Perry, an alleged Christian must know from the Bible that "You Reap What You Sow."

Rumor has it that he:

Was never really homeless, but it makes for a great rags to riches story

Most people think he is gay.

Is a hypocrite for donating money/patronizing homophobic African American Christian Churches including Bishop Eddie Long to sell tickets to his shows

Patronizes OPRAH to help his career.

Borrowed (stole?) his Madea character from Miss Sophia McIntosh, famous Atlanta Drag Queen.

Underpays his actors/writers, yet he reaps huge profits.

If you're male, love Oprah, date Tyra Banks, good chance you're gay.

The chickens are coming home to roost!

GirlFriend at 11:34AM on Oct 7th 2008

13. Tyler,
Haven't you learned anything from Oprah? You will not continue to be successful unless you do good and treat those who help make you possible right. Always be fair and treat others fair. You've got money now and its not going to run out. It is now time to SHARE you can't take it with you so "do the right thing."

William at 11:37AM on Oct 7th 2008

14. RDR,first all the writers he has are not quality writers. His TV show stinks! The show is not funny at all. And when you speak of the minimum pay amount, what numbers are they basing that on? The writers guild standard? My point is the writers can go find job elsewhere if they are not happy. I am sure there are plenty of untapped black writers out there who would be happy with the opportunity to write for Tyler Perry. This man has worked so hard and no one has a right to dictate to him how to run his business. They are employees not shareholders. Just like any company in America, people are free come and go.

Lisa Hampton at 11:41AM on Oct 7th 2008

15. It amazes me how quickly we assume that Tyler Perry is at fault when no one has even heard from him yet. People have already placed at fault with nothing more than a story. He could be wrong as hell but, we don't know that yet. We haven't been given enough information yet. Let's hear from him first then decide. Put your damn gavel down until he speaks. WTF!!!!!

Derek at 12:36PM on Oct 7th 2008
