Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Sarah Palin went head to head in their first and only vice presidential debate in St. Louis on Thursday, clashing on the economy, energy issues and foreign policy. Here, the candidates greet each other at the start of the highly anticipated showdown.

The debate at Washington University in St. Louis marked the first meeting of the vice presidential candidates. "Can I call you Joe?" Palin asked Biden, who approved.

The stakes were particularly high for Palin, who has served as governor of Alaska for less than two years. Polls show the public has become more skeptical of her ability to handle the vice presidency. Palin made only one obvious stumble, when she twice referred to Gen. David McKiernan, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan, as "Gen. McClellan."

The pressure was less intense for Biden, a veteran of more than 35 years in the Senate.

The economy quickly took center stage, with both candidates weighing in on the financial crisis and the bailout bill awaiting congressional approval. "The economic policies of the last eight years have been the worst economic policies we've ever had," Biden said.

Palin said one way to gauge the economic times would be to attend a child's soccer game and listen to parents. "I betcha you're going to hear some fear," she said.

Later, the tone became more heated when the topic turned to the Iraq war. Biden said that he and Barack Obama will be the administration to end the war and said John McCain had been "dead wrong" about the conflict. "For John McCain there is no end in sight to end this war -- fundamental difference," he said.

Palin countered that Obama's exit plan was essentially "a white flag of surrender in Iraq" at a moment when victory was "within sight." She also said Biden had once supported McCain's view of the war.

Palin got some bad news just before the debate, when an Alaska judge threw out a lawsuit filed by Republicans seeking to stop an abuse-of-power investigation aimed at her. Here, Palin looks on from the side prior to taking the stage.

1. GMAB! Just because your mother didn't go to the store with the food stamps doesn't mean they weren't used by your family. With the way this economy is going a whole lot of people will be getting them. Also he still didn't inform us of why he thinks Sarah Palin is qualified to be VP. Just because she's "down to earth" doesn't mean squat. I know a boat-load of "down to earth" people but they're not qualified to be VP. Try again....

2. This debate is going to be better than Chris Rocks "Don't kill the messenger." I wouldn't miss for the world!

Jen at 7:54PM on Oct 2nd 2008

3. ok, watching this debate and 1st off, I found it so OLD SCHOOL to hear the greeting to Biden, Palin saying…”…Can I call you Joe?” wtf was that??? LOL, your pageant charm isn’t going to work to run the country!!! I find it so sad that Palin keeps bringing up about ENERGY ISSUES b/c that’s ALL she knows!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!! She avoided so many questions! She can't give an answer, she's a pawn. Really, just a pawn and we need the Queen and King to get our country back on track. tsk tsk tsk to Palin on not preparing herself better for this debate.

nikki at 9:39PM on Oct 2nd 2008

4. I GUESS MCCAIN TAUGHT HER WELL AT DEBATE CAMP, HOW TO DANCE AROUND QUESTIONS ASKED. SHE SEEMED A BIT NERVOUS SHAKIE.

BUT THIS IS WHAT EVERYONE HAS TO REALLY THINK ABOUT I MEAN REALLY THINK ABOUT.

SENATOR JOHN MCAIN IS 72 YEARS OLD, HE HAD SEVERAL SCARES OF SKIN CANCER, OR BEEN IN REMITION 3 TIMES, A RECENT SKIN GRAFT, CANCER SCARE. I DO PRAY THAT HE IS ALRIGHT.
BUT GOD FORBID SOMETHING HAPPENS AND HE BECOMES INCOMPASITATED DO YOU HONESTLY THINK SHE CAN TAKE THE REIGNS. THIS IS A BIGGER BUDGET THAT SHE IS USED TO. THIS WILL BE UNSCRIPTED, SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO DEBATE CAMP TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO SAY...

I THINK WHOOPIE SAID IT BEST. NEITHER CANDIDATE HAS THE EXPERIENCE TO BE COMANDER AND CHIEF. SENATOR MCCAIN NOR SENATOR OBAMA HAS SAT IN THE OVAL OFFICE CHAIR, THEY ARE CAMPAINING TO GET THERE. THERE WAS A QUESTION I ASKED PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT AND ANSWER IT FOR ME......

5. Joe Biden was Joe Biden. Smart, un-scripted, diplomatic.
Listening to Sarah Palin was like someone just hit the play button to a previously recorded message! She even went as far as saying, “I am not going to answer the questions the way you want me to.” Translation, I am going to regurgitate what I have memorized, so don’t you dare interrupt me. God darn it I spent a month memorizing it!
The moderator said Tax, she said “forget about taxes, I am going to talk about energy, my expertise. LOL!
Would it be nice if the world revolved around her, no rules just her wishes! “We have economic crisis Ms VP.” Her response: “ I am not talking about crisis, Piper has a recital”

Hey, at least she was coherent

Fierce at 9:57PM on Oct 2nd 2008

6. when you can't think of an answer- go to energy! stick with what you know. it seems she doesn't know much else. i wonder if being deaf would be better than hearing the mispronunciation of "nuclear" for 4 more years. sometimes, i just don't know what question she's answering. is she just a space cadet or really that bad at evasion?

nova caine at 10:13PM on Oct 2nd 2008

7. Why can't she just answer the questions? What is her problem. He need to pick another running mate and retire this old pinup back to eskimos!!!!

Nik at 10:20PM on Oct 2nd 2008

8. What I want to know is why didn’t John McCain pick the slutty Green M&M as his running mate? That green M&M might be a slut, but she’s no bimbo! She is unscripted, unrehearsed and very authentic. Which is more than I can say about Sarah Palin. LOL!

May be John McCain has a cabinet position planned for the green M&M, like Secretary of Homeland Security. I have a lot of confidence in Ms. M&M. If any one can broker peace in the MiddleEast; it would be her, which is more than I can say about Sarah Palin. I feel safe already! Once those white stilettos hit the air, “it’s all G-O-O-D!” LOL! Our enemies would be like “War? Forgettaboutit, let’s make love” ROTF.

9. I think Gov. Palin is looking down reading from her notes too much. I am more convinced than ever that the McClain/Palin ticket is underwelming and the Obama/Biden ticket will get my vote. I hope everyone out there will vote for whomever is their choice - but VOTE!

11. This debate is over and some of the commentators think that this "chick" did a good job. She did a good job at avoiding certain questions, and OMG... how many times is she going to refer to John McCain and herself as being Mavericks. If I heard that word one more time I will scream. Sat. Night Live will have a good time this weekend poking fun at her.

Glo at 10:55PM on Oct 2nd 2008

12. As much as I despise the back stabbing Obama I found this debate between Palin and Biden quite interesting. Biden surprised me in being calm and colletive. On the other hand Gov. Palin was strikingly dynamic. She impressed me as being down to earth but no push over. She is as tough as nails. At any moment I expected her to spit tobacco. Yes, Palin looked presidential to me. She won my vote.

Analyst at 11:14PM on Oct 2nd 2008

13. i was not impressed at all by sarah palins tactics to be so down to earth until she came off as a very unprofessional individual. Joe Biden gave good answers and held his composure very well. I do not believe that ms palin is equipped to back anyone with running our country, e\what is this world really coming to.there were still a lot of talking out the side of your neck answers given tonight

SHARON G at 11:22PM on Oct 2nd 2008

14. Analyst..You were going to say she won the debate no matter what or maybe you watched another debate. Palin may be wonderful as a small town Mayor, but it's obvious she is wayyyyyy out of her league running for VP. She was like a runaway train; she was determined to use her scripted answers for any question..Golly gee. I think Biden was too nice to her. He should have beat her down with her global warming answer. In the end, the questions were soft and fuzzy and so is Ms. Palin. If McCain wins then dies in office there won't be a single press conference during a Palin Presidency.

Charles at 11:30PM on Oct 2nd 2008

15. Charles...I agree. The only answers she had were on her index cards. She is out of her league running for VP. Anyone who thinks that they are an expert on foreign policy because they are "closer to Russia" is another prime example why she is NOT THE ONE.
