Beware of Those Debt Bamboozlers

Posted Sep 26th 2008 6:00PM by Deborah Owens
Filed under: Money Talks, News, Work & Money

The producer of my radio show, Real Money, booked a guest who called himself a Credit Enhancement specialist.

He rolled up in a Hummer with gold rims, blue jeans and a throwback jersey chewing a piece of gum. Let's just say when he entered the studio and preceded to share how many folks he had helped get out of debt for a fee I was not a happy camper. If someone tells you to pay them money to get out of debt, RUN, don't walk, to the nearest not-for-profit credit agency to get some assistance with your finances. ...

Dirty Credit Card Tricks

Say "Bye-Bye" to Your Grace Period
No grace period means that you'll start accruing interest the moment you charge something and that can cost you a bundle of "extra" interest. Most credit card issuers have already reduced their grace period from 25 days to 20 days. Many others have eliminated the grace period altogether. Now they are coming up with more and more reasons to take away your grace period. Miss a payment? Stop carrying a balance? Bye-bye grace period!

    AOL Money & finance

    Punishing You for Being Smart
These fees are the lowest of the low because they penalize you for being a responsible credit card user. Some of the biggest offenders include charging you a fee for:
    + Closing your account
+ Failing to use a card for a period of time (such as six months or a year)
    + Not carrying a balance
+ Every transaction each and every time that you use your card
If your card charges you any of these fees, it's time to look for a new card!

    AOL Money & finance

    Lowering Your Minimum Payment
Another way some cards try to jack up their profits and lure you deeper into debt is by lowering the minimum payment due on your balance. It used to be cards required a minimum monthly payment of about 4% of your balance, but many now require as little at 2%. Don't fall for it! Going from a $40 payment to a $25 payment on a $2,500 balance means it will take you an extra 19 months to pay off your balance!

    AOL Money & finance

Inviting You to Skip a Payment
Broke this month? In their infinite generosity (ha!), some cards will "invite" you to skip a payment. This "helpful" offer, which sounds great at first blush, often comes after the holidays when your balance is big and your wallet is stretched. DON'T DO IT! Skipping that payment can lead to a host of trouble from a higher interest rate to possibly having to make extra payments in the future. Are you starting to notice a pattern?! You should be skeptical whenever your credit card company does something "nice" for you without you asking for it!

    AOL Money & finance

    Tricky Timing
We all know that our payment is due on a certain date or it's late, right? But a new twist being thrown into the mix is having your payment due by a certain time on the due date. If your payment is due at noon, and gets processed at 12:01, you get socked with a late fee AND likely a higher interest rate. Gimme a break! Carefully check your statement so you avoid this trap.

The fact of the matter is that the debt load that most people are carrying didn't happen overnight and the reality is that it is going to take some time and effort to dig your way out. One of the callers to my radio show shared how he got out of debt the old fashion way by stopping his spending and nickel- and-diming his way to financial freedom.

You know the saying, "most folks are one paycheck away from financial peril." Raynard shared that he was laid off from his job as an accountant and couldn't pay his bills. He was so distraught about his credit card debt that he took his knowledge of computers and offered his expertise to others for a fee. When he found another job he continued to direct every check he earned from his side business whether he earned ten or one hundred dollars to the credit card company. He was able to pay off eleven thousand dollars in debt in less than two years. Not everyone can develop this kind of discipline which is why you need to do some homework before you hand over your financial future to someone.

If you don't know which way is up when it's come to paying off your debt begin by visiting the National Foundation for Credit Counseling's website to locate an agency in your area that has passed their rigorous accreditation program.

The widely-known Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) is a member of the NFCC and they have affiliates across the country. Once you've narrowed your search down to one or two agencies, it's a good idea to check them out with one or more of the following to see if complaints have been filed against them: your state Attorney General's office, local consumer protection agency, and Better Business Bureau. You can find contact info for your State Attorney General at the National Association of Attorneys General
.
Fiscal Fitness: Choosing a Credit Counselor on the Federal Trade Commission's Web site is also a good resource.

But credit counseling agencies really can't do anything for you that you couldn't do for yourself, theoretically at least. You could attempt to negotiate with your creditors to lower interest rates, extend loan terms (to catch up on late payments or make your payments more manageable), or remove late fees. In reality, the average person will not have the same discipline as Raynard or be effective at negotiating with creditors but it may be worth a shot before you enter into a debt repayment plan. If you enter into a repayment program it is reflected on your credit history.

Be honest with yourself: if a lack of spending discipline is what got you into a financial mess you may need professional help. A wise man once said, "You can measure a person's success by their ability to ask for help." Just make sure the person you ask for help has your--and not their-- financial future in mind.

1. I'm not a professional advisor, but I have found some Biblical principles to help me overcome my financial struggles and I am living debt free completly. I wasn't convinced it would work but I noticed what I was doing wasn't so I decided to give it a try. There are a number of things you can do. 1. pray and ask God to help 2. start paying my tithe consistantly(look up in the last book in the old testament) even if it doesn't seem to make sense with your budget. 3. take a biblical financial counseling course at your church 3. started paying off debt. It may cut into your lifestyle, but it is worth it in the long run. I can testify that these are some of the things that help me. However everyones circumstances are different that is why prayer is important to see what direction will be best for you. The Biblical concept of giving to receive seems to work too. I thought this might help those that may be interested.

4. Yes, you are right, Airet. The book of Malachi in the old testament talks about how to handle money and paying tithes. Also, Dave Ramsey is an author of books that offer good practical advice on getting and staying out of debt. Mr. Ramsey also has a radio show in which he gives some of the callers his opinion on their personal financial questions.

5. I agree with #1's comment. In addition, I suggest creating a debt reduction plan. A simple listing of all of your debt, balances, and mininum payment. Calculate what you have to dedicate to paying off debts...say $500, $700, $1,000 depending on your ability and what is needed. Start by paying mininum balances on all but one card/debt where you will put most of your bill budget. This will help you to eliminate smaller bills first and put more on other bills because after one is paid off, that payment is now transfered to the next "focus" bill. Your credit will remain in good standing and you pay off your debt. And oh yeah, it takes time and dedication but the process may help us not get here again.
Faith+Dedication+Focus+Commitment=Debt Free!

8. In response to Rose, if the bill collector is calling regarding a delinquent charge card payment, than the answer is "No", they are not legally suppose to use any type of threat. Credit cards are unsecured debts and they cannot come after any real property that you have. But, if it is on an item car, furniture etc. they can inform you that it is in a default status.

12. First, confess with your mouth that you are coming out of debt. second, discover your God given talents and work it( cooking, sewing, art work, etc).Third, negogiate your debt. Begin to worship and praise God in advance for getting debt free. IT WILL HAPPEN. Be encourage.

13. I once had a bill collector tell me that they would take my house from me if i did not pay them. I hung up on her and she called by trying to tell me off. You wuoul think that i personally owed the money to her. I contacted the attorney general's office and they did nothing on my part. But the person did tell me that she was from the attorney generals office when she call later stating her office worked close and were in the same area as the attorney general. WOW! If big banks and business can get an out where is mine?

tlw at 9:10PM on Sep 29th 2008

14. Airet, the same thing is true for me. I put my trust in God and tithed (I put in what I could afford even if I didn't have; I chose my own amount but did it consistently), I prayed. I am out of debt except for basic mortgage, etc. It took some time but amazingly, each time I say "now what", something happens to bring money in, clothes in, food in, whatever is needed. I help myself and He helps me. I tell everyone I know that I didn't win the lottery, I won God. Most of them don't listen but I'm glad some know the truth. I tell everyone every chance I get. It's not hard and you don't need to be a rocket scientist. I'm not a fanatic but I have a quiet belief that God watches over everyone and as a result, I feel wonderful and beautiful and not a soul can put me down. :) Pray and believe in God - He helps - all you have to do is believe that He will help and walk in His footsteps. Trust Him.

15. WOW!!!
To Ariet, Artensa, Chendrix, and Jacapri: You have blessed me with your comments. I love the Lord and I know that sometimes he tests our faith to see if we're just talkin' trash. I've been in the "waiting room" while I actively search for employment. It's hard because I'm 60 and African-American. I do believe that age-discrimination is sometimes a problem. I'm well-educated (Master's degree), articulate, personable, and professional. I've been asking the Lord to give me clear direction regarding an income. I think; but, I'm not sure, that He is leading me back to school to obtain a Ph D. But, I'm not positive. I want to get out of credit card debt before I do anything else. The advice and suggestions you have each shared has motivated me to talk with my daughter--who's helping me financially. She is such a blessing to me in so many ways, including spiritually. I'm going to share all of your ideas with her so that she can improve her financial situation. She has a very good job and has had it for 5 years. Thanks again for your postings. Keep me in your prayers, PLEASE.
