Back to Basics: Bra 101

Hey ladies -- do you ever feel like the bras that you wear are just not fitting right? Is it impossible to find bras for your well stacked rack? Well, you're definitely not alone. According to fashion experts 75-80% of women wear the wrong size bra. No big deal, right? Wrong! Wearing the wrong bra can not only be a fashion faux pas but it can also affect your health. Lack of support can cause pain and discomfort. On the flip side, if your bra is too tight, this can dig into your skin leaving marks or even constrict your breathing.

Black Voices may have the solution. Bra maker Olga, a division of Warner's bras, designs bras which cater to the needs of top heavy women sizes 36-42 C, D, DD
(Itty Bittys need not apply). This month, Olga is launching their Wire-Free collection. This innovative design eliminates dig-in and irritation for all-day comfort. The right size bra can take inches off of your waist, improve your posture and make back pain a thing of the past. After checking out these tips we're sure you'll be ready for a bra makeover ASAP! And just because we heart you, one of our lucky BV readers will win a complete bra wardrobe courtesy of Olga! Read on to find out how....

Back to Basics: Bra 101

    Band Size:
Before shopping for a bra you should definitely get professionally measured at a boutique or department store. First measure your torso right under the breast line, the ribcage [disregard model in photo]. Add 5 inches to the measurement and that'll give you your band size.

    Bust Size:
In order to get your bust size you have to measure across the fullest part of your chest. Try to wear a bra that is form fitting and doesn't have padding in order to get the most accurate measure.

    Cup Size:
In order to get your cup size subtract your bust size from band size.
    AA 0'' to 0.5''
    A 0.5'' to 1''
    B 1'' to 2''
    C 2'' to 3''
    D 3'' to 4''

    Back Strap Test:
You want your bra to fit snuggly but not too tight. A good way to test this is by inserting two fingers at the back-center of the bra and one finger in the front. If you can do this with no problem than the bra is just right if not than you may need to get a larger band size.

    It's All about COVERAGE:
"If you have a full, rounded bust, choose a full coverage bra that will contain your entire bust without any "double bubble" effect," says intimate apparel expert Don Allen. Spillage is a leading indicator of your bra being too small.

Thick Straps: If you struggle with shoulder and back pain from lack of support, you may benefit from a thick strapped bra. You should look for straps that are also softly padded to avoid the issue of straps digging into your shoulders.

    Sports bras:
Sports bras typically come in two types: compression or separating encapsulation styles. Compression bras flatten your chest to keep them from bouncing. They don't work too well if you're larger than a C-cup. Encapsulation sports bras separate and support each breast separately. They work the best for larger than a C-cup.

    Lacy bras:
Laced bras are great when you're trying to feel sexy but when you're going for an everyday look beware of lace materials or bows attached to the front. It may look cute trying it on but when worn under a t-shirt lace patterns typically become visible and bows look rather odd.

Here's a little trivia....Name at least 3 trends stylist Mikki Taylor mentioned on Black Voices this past summer. Submit the correct answers by Friday October 10, 2008 by 5PM EST and you could win a bra make-over worth $200 by Olga Designs! Click here to enter!

2. I don't know none of the answer but I have big breast. And I have tried for year to find the right bra.I thought about a breast reduction but I have high blood pressure and a lot of other health issure. And I am so tired of bras digging in my skin.I have to take them off soon as I get in my house.

I understand your troubles. Try Jill Scott's Butterfly Collection, it's sold at Ashley Stewart. It's costly, but when you think about all the other bras that you have spent money on, that didn't do what you needed it to do, this might be the LAST one you need. Blessings :)

4. Seems today, women don't wear proper fitting blouses either. They all seem to like and wear the exact same fashion...blouses that fit like body-gloves or camisoles. Each and every one,the same style,The same-same.No individuality to be found, barring the Muslim sisters.Call me bias if you wish, but, the regular sisters don't leave nothing to the imagination. They even sport their almost naked breast with a tattoo, usually inked by a blue-eyed punk-styled white boy!So much for black culture! It's been railroaded by exploitative economics and the fascist police-state of today's times...I look backwards to more female nudity disguised as black beauty and liberation plus the deluge of sports and entertainment debauchery that straight-jacket revolutionary causes!

Earl Knox at 4:22PM on Oct 3rd 2008

5. Lane Bryant does fittings free of charge and they sometimes have bras buy one get one 1/2 off, you may even luck up and find some on the clearance rack along with some other nice items.

7. well im a little confused by the remark made by Mr.Knox. well guess you have all the nerves in the world to talk about black African American women.Im 27 years old and i dont wear tight fitting shirts that show everything! I do leave a lot for a man to wonder what im like under the clothes.!!! Maybe you have'nt seen many women.....these stats are probably form the state inwhich you are located...Im from South carolina and most women my age don't show everything.....but that is your take on it!!!!I go to vicky c's and get nice fitting bras............also Belks and JcPennys..........

10. You have to PAY FOR QUALITY , PERIOD. You buy some cheap bra at walmart, expect your boobs to be between your knees by the end of the day! ..Victoria Secret has quality bras, that fit, and hold things in place, ...lane bryant as well...
...Playtex has a couple quality ones too, but ya need to get measured and fitted, not just guess it, like me, ...lol.........Happy bra shopping, and as for the guy , and his man boobs?? get some coconut shells you numbnut!

kat at 11:30PM on Oct 3rd 2008

11. I agree with Chriss, Lane Bryant has good bras. I got one bra, little pricey a few years ago and it worked very well. I need to get back there.
I also agree with Kat you have to pay for quality. Walmart offers some good bras. I'm a 44DD and have to wear bras that have the underwire in them. Sometimes they can be quite uncomfortable. I have tried wire-free ones but they don't give enough of support for me. It's time to buy more the good ones I had for some reason the wires broke, so my journey starts all over again. Oh how I wish I could go without wearing one.

12. I'm a breast cancer survivor. Thats had reconstructive
surgery. Finding bras that fit is really hard. No one ever told me that the good breast would continue to grow.I don't want to have surgery to fix it. I just want a comfortable bra. That i can wear and no one notice the difference.

13. I am sixteen and I wear a D-cup and its so hard to find the right fitting bra, especially in my price range. What also adds to the problem I live with my father and I have no help when it comes to bras I don't know what to do in the store half the time whne trying to find the correct bra.

Angel at 11:45AM on Oct 5th 2008

14. I WAS WEARING A SIZE 38C, BUT TRY WEARING A 36D AND IT STILL IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE, BOTH SIZES WERE DIGGING IN MY SKIN AND LEAVING MARKS WHAT I AM TO DO

BERNADINE HILL at 6:20PM on Oct 5th 2008

15. I wear a 38J and I get my bra's from Nordstrom. I had no idea what size I wore for a long time, I just knew my shoulders and lower back hurt. I enjoy having big breast again. They are up and happy and my friends were shocked to find out what size the girls are (not that they couldn't see they were big) ;-)
