8 Million Might NOT Barack The Vote

Posted Sep 3rd 2008 10:00AM by Carmen Dixon
Filed under: BlackSpin, Elections

This election will be close.

Any black American who has NOT registered to cast his or her vote this November needs to wake up.

I say this to ALL Americans, but black folks in particular. It doesn't matter who you vote for; if you feel any commitment to our democracy, you are compelled as a United States citizen to register and vote.

Your forefathers and mothers and their allies were beaten, tortured and murdered attempting to register to vote.

But sadly, some folks are not getting this because the latest research uncovers that 8 million eligible black voters are not registered to vote. That's a full third of the black voting population. That vote alone is enough to swing the election. Read on ...

"In 2004, African Americans made up approximately 11 percent of the overall vote nationwide. If the percentage of African Americans was a mere two-and-a-half percent higher at 13-and-a-half percent, Democrats would currently be running for re-election at this time," he said. "For example in the state of Ohio in 2004, we lost by two percent or 100,000 votes. There were 270,000 unregistered African Americans. I use that as an illustration to show how the African American vote can make the difference in a state and across this country. So the African American vote can absolutely make the difference in this election.''

Your vote counts. Every vote counts.

Registering to vote is pain free these days. All you have to do is drop by your local post office, fill out a straightforward form, seal it and drop it in the mail slot. It's free and if you cannot read, you can bring along a friend to help you fill it out.

Here are some other resources that might help if you have any questions or prefer to avoid the post office:

1. Just registering to vote and voting is not enough!! Go out and actually get educated on the issues. Turn off your TV, as you can not get an honest opinion from any of the news sources. The main networks are so slanted to Obama and Fox is slanted toward McCain. Obviously you are are on the internet, so use it to responsibly get information. Believe it or not the candidates websites are not bad. They only state thier own ideas and stay away from trash talking.

2. Thank you for getting this message out. It is a shame that eight million African Americans aren't registered, given the struggles their ancestors went through to get that very right. How would these same people feel if they suddenly no longer had the right? Would they cherish it more? As we have seen over the past eight years, democracy IS fragile. Don't take your share in it for granted. Be heard. Count. Register to vote and go out and vote on election day. Being powerless and voiceless in unacceptable.

3. I have a question, why is this blog assuming that all non registered black people are gonna vote democrat? I have a friend who said to me Ron, don't vote for Mc Cain because Barrack is black. I told him i am voting for McCain because Barrack is an Idiot, he has no expierence and he does not believe in America himself. you want change? the only change you will see is large amounts of people going back to the welfare rolls with Barrack. MY LAST QUESTION THIS BLOG/ STORY WAS UNDER BLACK VOICES AND YES I AM WHITE. WHY DOES THERE HAVE TO BE BLACK VOICES WHY CAN'T IT JUST BE AMERICAN VOICES!!!!

ron at 11:49AM on Sep 3rd 2008

4. The reason there is a Black Voices ron is because it's a given that the other sites are geared towards white America. Why is it so bad that Black people have a site to voice their opinions? Do you not think we are entitled to our own opinions? You can go on any number of sites, and see the bashing and racism, so if we choose to keep to ourselves and discuss topics that we have in common, what is it to you? Nobody told you that you couldn't come to this site. And why did white people come to this site and make it a point of letting us know they're white? We don't care, and we don't go to the other sites letting them know we're black. Maybe you should start a White Voices site for you and your peeps.

5. If you want a site called American Voices ron, then why don't you try to create it. And see who gravitates to it. And if you think we shouldn't have Black Voices, why are you on here in the first place?

LIA at 12:05PM on Sep 3rd 2008

6. Why should anyone care about 8 million colored votes
if they don't care!!!

jim at 12:22PM on Sep 3rd 2008

7. I agree with Ron what blacks fail to mention are the millions of White Americans that died for there freedom. It is time for blacks to realize that it was there own kind that sold them into slavery as it still is happing today in Africa from there own brothers.

8. Terrorists, racists, freeloaders, non-working people, socailists, people in prison, communists , drug dealers all want Obama Hussien bin laden. Hardworking all American taxpayers want McCain

IE at 12:52PM on Sep 3rd 2008

9. I am a black American who voted republican the last election. (I am Democrat who has not made up his mind about this election). Last week I saw the Obama speech, the Clinton drama and the eighty four thousand in Mile High stadium.
I was proud of the fact that an African American will be given the opportunity to be considered for the next President of the United States. I never thought I would live to see that.
As I have watched the RNC with a particular interest in “Sarah Palin,” I agree with the RNC faithful that her family should be off limits to the media. To be fair I know that Obama has said the same thing.
I live in Los Angeles and the paparazzi here are not a favored bunch. They have been described as an in your face really bad bunch. There is this fascination that the American public to some degree accepts how they go about their business. This paparazzi style reality TV seems to be the buzz across the nation, if not the world.
Over this long campaign, I think that the RNC, the DNC and the Independents fail into this strange realm of Reality TV. We have highs and lows and we have drama. The only thing we were lacking was anything relating to sex. With this being a political event, there could not be much of that. Thanks to the RNC we had the shock of the 17 year old daughter coming out as pregnant seemingly fulfilling that role. What could be next? What would happen if Mrs. Palin becomes the next Vice President or heaven forbid, the President of these United States and she became pregnant? A Vice president or president, “pregnant.” Wow, a mile high full of reality TV writers could not come up with a story like that. This is the ultimate idol show where we vote for the best candidate. This is a historic event where I am going to listen to all the candidates before I cast my vote for the best singer.

JRG at 1:22PM on Sep 3rd 2008

10. I don't understand the phenom of people not voting. My office mate who, incidentally,is white, two grandchildren, a husband and two stepsons refuses to register to vote. I don't get it. How can someone who adores her family not want to participate in this democracy and put a small claim on their future and hers. There's a certain kind of apathy that cannot be explained. Guess it's a little like asking people to pick up their own trash and get ignored.

Cocoa Delight at 2:57PM on Sep 3rd 2008

11. First Obama is not black, he is biracial, so why does he not claim to be the first bi-racial person running for office. He is not BLACK, I am tired of everyone saying Obama is going to be the first black President of the United States. Well I am doing my part to make sure he is not the first biracial President. On another note I am democrat and have alwyas claimed to be, but I vote for the person not the party. There have been plenty of times I voted for a republican over a democrat, with me it is more about values and Obama cannot claim to be biracial, he claims to be black, the first of many lies. I like Biden but not enough to vote for Obama. I am not sure of Palin as I do not know her. I have black friends and most of them agree with, blacks have more rights than whites, they can claim racisim if things do not go thier way, whites (especially white males) can just work harder to make sure it does not happen again.

Danny at 2:58PM on Sep 3rd 2008

12. Why do black Americans think that Obama will change their personal situation? You won't have more unless you do something about it. We have always been our worst enemy (regardless of our race or culture). There MUST be a better reason to vote for Obama than his skin color. If you are voting for him, ask yourself the real reason why. Has he stated a specific policy or plan that you agree with? No? If you are voting for him just because he is 1/2 black, isn't that a racist reason?

Dan at 2:58PM on Sep 3rd 2008

13. I encourage black Americans to vote, but not for Barack. I don't think he has a positive feeling for America, even though his "pretty words" might convince some. And, his wife stated clearly that until she was in her 40s she was not proud to be an American. This should concern us, as Americans. I want a strong proud group of Americans living here, not someone "sitting on the fence" about this extremely important issue. VOTE MCCAIN/PALIN

B.K. Wright at 2:59PM on Sep 3rd 2008

14. Why should anyone care if they vote, if they don't care.

jim at 2:59PM on Sep 3rd 2008

15. Wait a minute people! What about the women in this country? We have less rights than the black man and everybody seems to forget that little known fact! Black men could vote before white women and black men make more money than women in the corporate world! And again a women got shoved aside for the black man (Barrack) even though she was much better qualified for President than him! So tell me again about the poor fight for equal rights for the black man! Women also were slaves to their own husbands who beat them and had to cater to their every need and had absolutely no say in any subject because we were deemned not smart enough to understand the male world! So people, tell me again how the blacks have to fight for their rights! If it wasn't for us (stupid women) during word war 1 and world war 2 this country would have fallen to pieces because it was the woman who proved themselves to be just as smart and valuble to this country as men! But nooo, we still didn't get the right to vote until AFTER the black man was allowed to! Look up your history and look at today's world and then tell me again how the black man has to stand up for their rights!
