Cuba Gooding Jr. To Play Dr. Ben Carson In 'Gifted Hands'

Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. ('Jerry Maguire') has been cast to play Dr. Benjamin S. Carson in the new TNT Original movie 'GIFTED HANDS: THE BEN CARSON STORY', according to an announcement today by Michael Wright, senior vice president in charge of the Content Creation Group for TNT, TBS and TCM. The movie, based on Carson's inspirational memoir, is a JOHNSON & JOHNSON SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION® that will trace his journey from frustrated inner-city kid to director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.

The project is the latest JOHNSON & JOHNSON SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION® movie to appear on TNT. "Johnson & Johnson is proud to be bringing the story of Ben Carson's extraordinary life to families across America," said Kim Kadlec, chief media officer, Johnson & Johnson Global Marketing Group.

Carson's memoir, which was crafted with Cecil Murphey, describes life as a child on the mean streets of Detroit. Carson faced difficulties early on, when his father abandoned the family. "All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my mother," Carson wrote. Carson's mother pushed her son to become the best he could be through education. Carson recalled her saying over and over to him, "Bennie, if you can read, honey, you can learn just about anything you want to know. The doors of the world are open to people who can read."

With a new pair of glasses and encouragement to spend time at his local library, Carson dove into the world of books. His scholastic performance improved dramatically. He went on to college and medical school, refusing to give up on the dream he and his mother had for his future, even when prejudice and negative peer pressure threatened to stand in his way. Carson is now a best-selling author and director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, where he pours everything he has into helping young people overcome their medical limitations and fulfill their own dreams.

Carson was recently named a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. President George W. Bush bestowed the honor on him at a ceremony in June. In the White House announcement, Carson was honored for working throughout his career "to improve the lives of those suffering from neurological disorders. His groundbreaking contributions to medicine and his inspiring efforts to help America's youth fulfill their potential have strengthened our nation."

1. I'm sorry but I love Dr. Ben Carson and I hope that Cuba doesn't butcher the character and intelligence of this great man. I can't take Cuba seriously. For real.

2. In response to the first comment, I didn't take Jamie Fox very seriously either until he did Ray Charles. But clearly you must not be familiar with Cuba's more stellar roles such as Men of Honor and the Tuskegee Airmen. He'll do a fantastic job as Dr. Ben Carson.

3. I dont like Cuba's acting, the weird blinking he does with his eyes...so annoying. I'm not going to watch but I hope Dr. Carson and his family are happy with his performance.

4. This I look forward to seeing.

5. I would watch it if they had chosen A REAL BLACK MAN to play Dr. Ben Carson. Choosing someone like cuba gooding is a DISGRACE to the real Dr. Ben Carson. cuba gooding hates himself, so why allow him portray and butcher this man's legacy?

6. i'm quite sure he will do a good job.

7. As the mother of a 14 year old boy who is "trying to find his way", I am ecstatic that Dr. Ben Carson's story is being shown on television. Last summer I started a successful teen boys reading group to encourage reading. "Gifted Hands" was one of the books chosen and it had many life lessons and was very inspiring. I recall that book allowing for rich discussion not only for the teens but parents as well. Dr. Carson's mom, Sonya Carson, is a true soldier and an inspiration to all parents, particularly single moms. The Teen Reading club members and parents will probably have a tv viewing party when "Gifted Hands" airs. Dr. Carson's story is one that all should see and learn from. Let's spread the word...

8. I am very excited and glad that TNT will bring 'Gifted Hands' to the screen. This is a story that will uplift many spirits, and must be told. As for the People that have a problem with Cuba Gooding, that is shameful. This man is an actor, someone who has an Oscar on his mantle. I know he will do himself and us proud in this role of Ben Carson

9. As someone who has known Dr Carson for many years I am beyond thrilled that they are bringing "Gifted Hands" to "life" even if it is on TV (I happen to think it is worthy of a movie in the theaters)

11. Dr. Ben Carson is an excellent role model for all people and the work that he does through medicine and outreach is just amazing. I can't wait to see this movie. Does anyone know when it will aire on television?

Lawrence at 6:04PM on Sep 10th 2008

12. Dr. Ben Carson has been my inspiration for so long now, and I hope that those of you who don't already know of this inpirational man will get to know him through this movie and his books and be inspired by his accomplishments.

13. Cuba is doing well. My son worked on the movie(he is lightskinned one with curly hair) anyway the movie is doing good everyone is going all out Kimberly Elis from set it off, john q, and tyler perry movie did a fantastic job as well. The costumes look good. it took me back to 1965 or 7 (no im not tht old ) but it looked as if i was in old days. then 1970s looked great also! So dont worry from the scenes i seen Cuba will do fine.
