Posted Aug 20th 2008 11:01AM by Gennifer Miller
Filed under: Hair Apparent, Lifestyle

For those looking to add strength and moisture to their hair, deep conditioning on a consistent basis is key.

If you are looking to start deep conditioning on a consistent basis or just looking for new conditioners to try, I compiled a list of popular deep conditioners. Most of these product can be found online or in your local beauty supply store or shopping center.

Moisture Based Deep Conditioners - For dry, dull, brittle and breaking hair. For best results, use weekly under heat.

For hair that is not experiencing significant breakage or dryness but needs a little boost in moisture, alternate between deep conditioning with a moisture based conditioner and light protein based conditioner each week.

  • Mizani Moisturefuse
  • Keracare Humecto
  • Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner
  • Keracare Conditioner for Color-Treated Hair
  • Crème of Nature Nourishing Conditioner
  • Atone Botanicals Reconstructer
  • Jason Sea kelp
  • Redken Real Control
  • Aubrey Conditioners
  • Joico Moisture Recovery
  • Elucence MB Conditioner
  • Jane Carter Replenishing Conditioner
  • Phytonectar and jojoba conditioners
  • Neutrogena Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner
  • Pantene Relaxed and natural mask
  • Nexxus Humectress
  • Hydratherapie by Biolage
  • Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner
  • Joico Moisture Intensive Treatment Extra Conditioning Conditioner
  • Aveda Dry Remedy

Protein Based Conditioners (Light/Medium) - For limp, lifeless, thinning and overly elastic hair.
For best results, use a light protein conditioner weekly until hair regains strength and body.

For hair that is not experiencing significant thinning or inelasticity but needs a little extra strength, alternate between deep conditioning with a moisture based conditioner and light protein based conditioner each week.

  • Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructer
  • Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Mask
  • Aveda Damage Remedy Conditioner
  • Mane and Tail Original Conditioner
  • Ors Replenishing Pac
  • Aubrey GPB
  • Nexxus Keraphix
  • Phytospecific Intense Nutrition
  • Motions CPR (med)
  • ORS Hair Mayo (med)
  • Vitale Pro Super Conditoner

Protein Based Conditioners (High) – For severly damaged hair. For best results, use once every 4-6 weeks under heat. Must be followed up with a moisturizing conditioner!

  • Nexxus Emergencee
  • Aphogee Treatment for Damaged Hair
  • Joico K-Pak reconstructer
  • Mizani Kerafuse

Combination - Moisture and Protein Based Conditioners - For damaged hair. May still need to follow with additional moisture based conditioner, depending on hair's needs.

  • Mizani Fufyl
  • Affirm 5 and 1
I hope this list is helpful for people looking for products to deep condition with on a regular basis. For more information on when to use a protein conditioner v. moisturizing conditioner, click here.

3. I only use natural products for caring for my hair. The Shea & Mango Butter Conditioning Mask at Mineral Indulgence is great for me because it contains real shea and mango butter for deep moisturizing Black hair textures. I also like the fact that it leaves a natural shine and softness so I dont have to use a heavy grease after conditioning my hair. Its at http://www.mineralindulgence.com/Hair_Care_Products.html

4. the hair in the crown of my headis always breaking off it looks like i am almost bald. I have used condtioners and hot oil treatments they work for a little while then my hair breaks again. My scalp will start itching and then my hair starts falling out. At times my scalp even burns and hurt. I have used Sulphur8 and that helps, my dermatologist says I do not have a fungal disease. Can u help me?

5. I would also like to mention WEN haircare products by Chaz Dean. His line can be found on QVC,and/or google to find other avenues to find them. You will note that the conditioners are to be used as both shampoos and leave-in conditioners. There will be no foam created while shampooing-this is expected since there isn't any sodium laurel sulfate in the products. Not only is this a cheap additive to produce foam, but it's also linked to cancer. He also has natural oils (not equal to "grease") and styling balms if you should choose to try. I love it for my hair (I'm African-American) since it leaves it soft, volumized, clean but not stripped of natural oils, and moisturized. It's a great product.

6. olivea williams,
GOOD DAY, SORRY BUT YOUR SITUATION I HAD A CLIENT WITH SOME OF THE SAME ISSUES YOU ARE HAVING WOTH YOUR HAIR, HOWEVER SHE HAD LUPUS.
MY ONLY SUGGEGTION TRULY IS FOR YOU TO SEE A DEMATOLIGIST REGARDING THIS ISSUES ASAP, SO IT CAN RESOLVED. WITH HER HAIR WE WOULD USE A DEEP CONDITIONER AND THEN I WOULD WEAVE HER HAIR WITH THE NET, TO ADVOID ANY IRRIATION TO HER SCALP.
SINCERELY,
COZI

7. I've spent countless dollars trying to find the best conditioners for my hair. I usually experience a lot of shedding. I know it's common to loose a certain amount of hair daily, however when reading comments on different black hair care blogs, some ppl said that after using certain products, they didn't have anymore shedding. I currently use KUZ, SALERM, & ALTER EGO hair care products from shampoo, to conditioner to deep conditioner and leave-in treatments. I recently started using these products a few days ago and I have NO breakage or shedding whatsoever. So hopefully my hair will start it's new journey to health and length! I'll def check in here to see what new!

8. I have shoulder length curly thick natural hair. I need a good brand that will work for me?

Linda at 4:49PM on Sep 11th 2008

9. Mizani products are wonderful in my opinion! I have type 4b hair and when I started using their products my hair made a complete turn around. Mizani Fulfyl is a wonderful conditioner that provides a great balance of moisture and protien without leaving my hair dry and brittle. I believe fulfyl provides more moisture to my hair than Mizani Moisturefuse.

Queen at 6:11PM on Sep 13th 2008

10. Can you use 911 leave in hair conditioner every two weeks? I was told that if you use some conditioners too often, it will make your hair brittle.

Lee at 6:54PM on Sep 30th 2008

11. This post is very helpful, since I've been experiencing a lot of recent breakage in my hair. Thank you so much.
