College Students And Energy Drink Dangers

Posted Aug 19th 2008 4:47PM by Carmen Dixon
Filed under: BlackSpin, Health News

It takes reading, writing and endurance to be successful in college. Truth is, all-nighters are as common as keg parties in campus life. Back in the day caffeine and cigarettes were the "stay awake" weapons of choice. But today's angry sounding arsenal shouts names like Red Bull and Monster. In other words, juiced up college kids are relying on energy drinks to get through the night. These students make up a significant part of the $3 billion energy drink market.

But for many of those who consume these jet fueled concoctions, there's a problem. Research has uncovered a link between heavy energy drink consumption and substance abuse and risky sexual behavior – except if you're black. ....According to the University of Buffalo:

Frequent energy drink consumers (six or more days a month), according to Miller's findings, were approximately three times as likely as less frequent energy drink consumers or non-consumers to have smoked cigarettes, abused prescription drugs and been in a serious physical fight in the year prior to the survey. They reported drinking alcohol, having alcohol-related problems and using marijuana about twice as often as non-consumers. They were also more likely to engage in other forms of risk-taking, including unsafe sex, not using a seatbelt, participating in an extreme sport and doing something dangerous on a dare. The associations with smoking, drinking, alcohol problems and illicit prescription use were found for white but not black students.

Unfortunately, the study does not lay out reasons for the racial disparity in its findings. And it certainly doesn't mean that the drinks are healthy or recommended for anyone. According to the study's author:

...Energy drinks typically contain three times the caffeine of a soft drink, and in some cases, up to 10 times as much. They also include ingredients with potential interactions such as taurine and other amino acids, massive doses of vitamins, and plant and herbal extracts."

Proceed with caution.

The College Survival Guide

    A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.

    Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.

    Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.

    Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.

    MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.

    Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age

    Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.

    Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.

    Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.

    Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

1. What the hell happen to just realizing why your in college in the first place as motivation. If you're not fighting to keep your "own" home, food in your mouth or clothes on your back from this recession of an economy then the motivation should clearly be "I'm hear to get an education to one day own my own home, have a family and take care of the ones who have helped me get here" so I can do that. Kids these days are caught up in what they see on tv and that's why their eyes are on the price as far as education. They getting caught up the make believe lives of the people on tv and oppose of the science involve as to how people on tv have gotten that far b/c the MEDIA sensationlize all of the negative and not the science involve in reality of people successes. If they would pay close attention to all of it then they would CLEARLY see that if you don't have a back up plan such as the proper education that is needed in this world to stay afloat then you will fall HARD on your ASS with no one to pick you up.

2. Most energy drinks don't do you any good and if you drink more than one, it'll have you feeling like you're on some type of drug. The best energy drink I've had that has had no type of (drug-like) effect on me what-so-ever is this energy drink called XS. It's healthier than every energy drink out there with zero carbs, zero sugar, and only 8 calories - I energize my body and mind without storing fat from calories, carbs or sugar. Fortified with potent B-vitamins, XS can give you the rush without the jittery side effects and crashes of typical energy drinks. XS will give you a rocket powered lift, allowing the body to adapt to higher levels of physical, emotional, and environmental stress.

I believe there are 13 flavors of XS. There are 3 flavors available that are caffeine free. If you're looking for a flavor that matches the classic Red Bull taste, try Tropical Blast. My favorite flavor is Black Cherry Cola Blast. This premium energy drink is available by the case (12 cans in a case, 8.4 fl oz each) at a very reasonable price. You can find out more about and purchase XS energy drinks at: http://cryan8.qhealthbeauty.com Just type in XS in the Search box on the top right hand side and there you go!

3. It is amazing to me that when someone says children these days that they forget that this stuff was going on when they were that age. Drinking drugs, sex,and smoking does'nt that describe the 70s?

4. ENERGY DRINKS- They !@#$%^&#$% suck- I will drink 2-3 energy drinks in the morning to stay awake at work, where I can fall a sleep and will be tired all day long- However, when I get home and need to sleep I am up all night, it is as though I did a speed ball- What is up with that? They don't work when you need an energy drink but work like hell when you don't need it-

5. That's slightly ridiculous. Some of those potential actions college students are taking are not that bad anddd like someone else pointed out- they've always happened in the past. Drink up.

6. I Think the real problem comes into play when you mix these energy drinks with alcohol!! For example "Red Bull and Vodka", "Rock Starr and Hennesy"! This is a popular "Cocktail" that I feel is "DEADLY"!!

7. black folks don't drink energy drinks, please.... that person is trying to kill you
