Pepa Tells It Like It Is in New Book

Sandy "Pepa" Denton
of rap group Salt-N-Pepa, is joining the ranks of celebrities releasing autobiographies. Her book, Let's Talk About Pep, co-written with Karen Hunter, will be released by VH1 Books at the end of this month.

Described as a tell-all, Pepa is supposed to offer an uncensored look at her life including her troubled childhood, surviving abuse, her first encounters with Cheryl "Salt" James and their ups and downs, her failed marriages and her escape from domestic abuse, and starring in reality shows like The Surreal Life and The Salt-N-Pepa Show.

"Most of you know me as Pep, or Pepa, the fun-loving half of Salt-N-Pepa," she says. "I am the party girl, the one who is down for whatever. But behind the laughs and the smiles is a whole lot of pain."

Queen Latifah penned the book's introduction and Missy Elliott closes it out with the epilogue. Other celebrities like LL Cool J, Martin Lawrence, and Spinderella, make cameos.

Check out an excerpt.

The College Survival Guide

    A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.

    Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.

    Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.

    Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.

    MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.

    Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age

    Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.

    Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.

    Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.

    Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

1. No matter what has been said, Salt and Pepa and TLC have been the best female groups to hit the airway. Nobody can compare and the book seem like a winner. Nothing but the best of luck PEPA!

2. My love of Hip-Hop started with Salt-n-Pepa. So yes, I will continue to support my girl...MUCH LUV!!!

Mike in Philly at 11:59AM on Aug 14th 2008

3. Correction Mike in Philly. Hip-Hop did not start with Salt-n-Pepa. It started with The Sequence (featuring a young Angie Stone). Know your history Bruh.

William G at 12:47PM on Aug 14th 2008

4. William g get your facts straight. The sequence was the first feamale rap group to release a rap record. lady b was the first female rapper. Dude did not saySaly-n-Pepa started it, he said his love of hip hop started with them.

6. I am looking forward to this book. Pepa is a favorite of mine along with Salt N Spin. This is a good look for her, I wish her the best.

Steph at 1:34PM on Aug 17th 2008

7. I can't wait to read the book and hope Pepa inspires more women to escape domestic violence. RESPECT.

Farfree at 7:06PM on Aug 17th 2008

8. MY love of hip-hop started with Salt&Pepa also!! I saw them live when I was little and wanted to become a female rapper also. I never did, LOL but I still love me some S&P!!

Justice at 7:59PM on Aug 17th 2008

9. I AGREE WITH THE OTHER WRITER TLC AND SALT AND PEPA ARE THE BEST. AND I'M SO TIRED OF PEOPLE THINKING BEYONE IS THE BEST. BEYONE CAN'T SING OR ACT.
SHE ONLY MADE IT BIG, BECAUSE OF JAY-Z. I'M SURE PEPA BOOK WILL DO GOOD.
GOOD LUCK IN WHATEVER YOU DO.

Juanita at 8:41PM on Aug 17th 2008

10. OMG! I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS ABOUT 8 AND I FIRST HEARD "I'LL TAKE YOUR MAN" AND I WAS LIKE DAYUMMMM! YES I WILL BE BUYING THAT BOOK TO ADD TO MY COLLECTION.

KEE-KEE2FINE at 11:23PM on Aug 17th 2008

11. This is something I won't be buying. Not interested in hearing about her life and substance abuse history. You heard one story you heard them all and they all read the same.

Salt n pepa was a good group but I do not think her book would read all that interesting. I also see that she has succumbed to the hollywood plastic surgery fad.

Well anyway, good luck to her. She is desperately trying to get back in the limelight and she will need some luck for that. Her behavior on that show was downright stupid! The show was horrible and Sandy Denton should of invested her money.

sighs at 10:10AM on Aug 18th 2008

12. I WOULD LOVE TOO MEET PEPA

SAM SMITH at 3:39PM on Aug 18th 2008

13. Do I really need to know "Everything" about a celeb? I mean doesn't anyone appreciate privacy anymore?

lockstress at 5:10PM on Aug 18th 2008

14. I have to admit that when I saw the pic of Pep on her book's cover, I at first thought it was Toni Braxton. She has not only had some nips and tucks, but has also been working down those pounds. In my opinion, what God gave us is perfect enough. But, moving forward....I remember going to see Salt N' Pepa who were a part of a tour featuring Today, MC Hammer, Kid N' Play and of course Guy. Man, that show was hot! There will never be a female rap team that can touch them.....Good luck with the new book!

mstee at 1:14PM on Aug 20th 2008

15. Dumb ass he said his love....not yours or not hip hop, but his love for it.
