D'Angelo: Did Sex Symbol Status Kill His Career?

Posted Aug 14th 2008 9:09AM by Karu F. Daniels

By Karu F. Daniels, BlackVoices.com

It was recently reported in Black Music Notes that D'Angelo has signed a record deal with J Records to release his long awaited third opus this fall.

But many still wonder what the hell was the reason for his near ten year recording hiatus anyway.

Yeah, the Richmond, Virginia native has had his run-ins with the law. But so have many of his contemporaries and fellow musicians.

Some have still managed to contribute to their musical repertoire in between prison stints, legal woes, rehab jaunts and other dubious activities.

But not D'Angelo (real name: Michael Eugene Archer).

His last full length music project, 'Voodoo,' was released Jan. 11, 2000. And he has been virtually absent since the promotion of that masterful platter subsided from radio playlists.

The biggest track from the opus was the sensual Raphael Saadiq-produced single 'Untitled (How Does It Feel?),' which seemed to have taken on a life of its own.

Have some tell it: the sex-charged single and its equally stimulating music video (where the chisel-chested singer/songwriter, arguably, simulated receiving fellatio) is what was the beginning of the end of D'Angelo, who at that time was considered a progenitor of the burgeoning neo-soul music movement.

"'Untitled' wasn't supposed to be this mission statement for 'Voodoo,'" his former manager Dominique Trenier said in the August 2008 edition of 'Spin' magazine. "I'm glad the video did what it did, but he and I were both disappointed because, to this day, in the general populace's memory, he's the naked guy," he continued, even admitting feelings of his own "guilt."

Now being known as a sex symbol is considered a gift to some. Ask Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.

But for the 'Brown Sugar' crooner, who with his career-defining debut album came across as a pudgy piano playing prodigy, it seems to have been the ultimate curse.

"We couldn't get through one song before women would start to scream for him to take off something," recalled in-demand horn player Roy Hargrove, who performed on the groundbreaking album and on the road with D'Angelo. "It wasn't about the music. All they wanted him to do was take off his clothes."

That was a tall order for a man Trenier referred to as not "a sexy dude" but a "real musician who wears glasses and plays video games."

"He'd get angry and start breaking s--t," recollected revered Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson – who is an intimate associate and longtime collaborator of D'Angelo's. "The audience thinking, 'F--k your art. I wanna see your ass!' made him angry."

Since the release of 'Voodoo,' the only record many people know from D'Angelo, the son of a Pentecostal preacher, is a police record.

Here's a run-down:

In January 2005, he was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, and driving while intoxicated. He pleaded guilty to the DUI and marijuana charge and, on April 13, was given a fine and suspended sentence and his driver's license was revoked.

On September 12, he received a three-year suspended sentence on the cocaine possession charge.

On September 19, 2005, just a week after being sentenced for cocaine possession, D'Angelo was critically injured in Powhatan County, Virginia when the SUV he was riding in hit a fence, ejecting him from the vehicle. He reportedly was not wearing a seatbelt.

In August 2006, D'Angelo was confirmed to have exited Eric Clapton's exclusive Crossroads rehabilitation stint on the island of Antigua.

On August 10, 2007, he was sent to court on charges relating to a car accident that occurred two years prior. He reportedly pleaded guilty to these charges and was ordered to pay a $1,250 fine, in addition to forfeiting his license for 15 months. He also received a nine-month suspended jail sentence.

"I didn't realize how vulnerable he was and how deep his issues ran," tour manager Alan Leeds told 'Spin.' "He's cursed now with fretting over how much his fan base is because of how he looked as opposed to the music. It took away his confidence, because he's not convinced why any given fan is supporting him."

Deepness.

Things may be looking bright for the father of neo-soul diva Angie Stone's son.

According to his new manager Lindsay Guion, he's on track to finish recording by the end of the month.

That should make the big-wigs at J Records – and countless of D'Angelo's truest fans -- happy.

Until then, an enhanced 'Best Of' collection recently arrived on store shelves via EMI -- boasting digitally-mastered versions of his hits such as 'Lady,' the aforementioned 'Brown Sugar,' 'Cruisin' and the fateful 'Untitled' track. The video clip is even featured on the DVD version of the collection.

So proceed with caution.

1. If his music is good and he respects his fans then he has nothing to worry about. In the music business, fans tend to show more love to plus size men as opposed to plus size women. No it is not fair, but is true. I am glad that this gifted artist is still making music. I am anxiously waiting to hear from him and other artists that I have not heard from in a while.

2. The medium of television has flooded the music industry inparticularly w/so many images of scantilly clad women in videos over the years that it would appear that the moment a man presented himself in a similar fashion, the female viewers sort of went nuts over it.
It's impossible for the ears to ignore good music though - and I do believe that if his new project is reminiscent of that soulful sound he once projected, people will still want to enjoy it up close and personal and will appreciate his true talents.

3. D'Angelo is big whiner. His sex symbol status is NOT what killed his career...that last sorry ass cd killed his career. As for that video, it might have been enjoyable, had he been actually SINGING, in lieu of caterwauling like a cat in heat. Drug use didn't help.

Funny how being sexy didn't kill his first cd...which I might add, was smoking HOT!!! Every single track!!

First Angie Stone says her career isn't what it should be because she's darkskinned...now D'Angelo says being sexy killed his career...naw...putting out crap and calling it a cd did that...and the crackpipe contributed...although Amy Winehouse is a crackhead who puts out great music...go figure...

4. I PERSONALLY THINK D'ANEGLO IS SELFISH, HE WAS BLESSED WITH A VOICE, THE LOOKS AND THE BODY THAT MADE HIM A STAR AND THEN HE TURNS AROUND AND CRYS ABOUT IT, INSTEAD APPRECIATE WHAT GOD GAVE HIM WHAT A SHAME THAT'S WHY YOU ARE WHERE YOU ARE NOW.

LORRAINE at 4:39PM on Aug 14th 2008

5. I am so sick og him and Betonce. Wont he chill. Fist of all what people dont see is that it's all PR. This is jst a part of a bigger scheme for hip-hop and rock to collide. I am not a fan of the "black" rocker movement and I personally think it is a joke. This is for the dummys who will eat this up and then go and buy his next half if not all rocker album. I listened to some old Jay the other day and it is a shame how wveryone is just tryna make money. What happened to black people being stingy with rap, excuse my language but the word hip hop is something that I don't relate to. But in all honesty this is crap and it all equals money in the big picture. It opens his fan base to the rockers fans wh omay not listen to Jay already. But if this is what the people want this is what they will get. Hip Hop is a joke, fun and money. I miss the days when you could actually go to music for therapy, thats when it was called RAP

6. I agree that the "Voodoo" cd was not a very good follow-up to the "Brown Sugar" cd. And for me that is what killed it. Big Luther, Little Luther, it didn't matter as long as the music was good.

Anna Jean at 5:07PM on Aug 14th 2008

7. Avril, you must be young and not a true fan of real music. D'Angelo is an ARTIST who let the industry dictate his music career by "re-imaging" him and YES, it backfired. I don't think he's a whiner, I think he wants to get back to making that good ole fashioned music that Lelah James talks about!! His last cd VOODOO was the perfect example of what an artist is.....most of that music was created using a live band, his vocals were on point and his messages were loud and clear. Familiarize yourself with artists like: D'Angelo, Eric Benet, Raheem DeVaughn, Van Hunt, Raphael Saadiq, Rahsaan Patterson, NOT THE LIKES OF Usher, Chris Brown, LLoyd etc. The are manufactured, boxed and SOLD AS SLAVES TO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.

MsDavis at 8:56PM on Aug 14th 2008

8. I actually thought Voodoo was alot better than Brown Sugar; the songs were more soulful and the instrumentation was live in the studio music. They got to start bringing that back and I could play that CD without skipping.
I don't think Sex symbol thing killed his career, the long gaps between albums is what killed it. he hasn't released a CD since I graduated from high school and that was 8 years ago. Let's get it together. The only person that can get away with a gap like that is Michael Jackson. Then they got the nerve to release a greatest hits by D'Angelo. I'll buy the new record cause it's D'Angelo, let's hope he's get his body back into "Untitled" shape. :)

9. What in the world happened to him? Lawd.

10. I think that Both "Brown Sugar" and "Voodoo" are both the same .. they are both brilliant albums the only difference is that Brown Sugar is more structured .. where as Voodo has a more laid back jam session feel to it but brilliant none the less.

Some artist take it hard when people are more interested in what tthey look like rather then the message they are trying to get across in their music.

prime example.. Tank at the apollo.. my opinion Tank can sang his ass off but when he was performing with his clothes on he couldent get no coopereration but the second he took his clothes off the women went wild.

i think that people(especially women) who are more interested in what D looks like rather then his musical message is what has stalled his career because he doesent wanan be a peice of meat he wants to be appreciated for his musical talents and dedication to his craft.

now ladies ask youselves and be honest if D weighed 400 pounds and had love handles from here to zinbabwe would u still rush to buy his music? in your answer is yes then u are a true D fan.

Being an artist is no different then being like anyone else you want to be appreiated for who you are not for what u are or are not nor for what you do or dont have.

11. This is directed to those who are supportive of D'Angelo's comeback. this brother is very talented and upon recognizing that we all are impressionable to some degree, I believe those who care for his general well-being instead of his potential for making money, then let this brother use what God gave him....his voice.

He puts me in the mind of Marvin Gaye, and as we know he too had a difficult time dealing with fame, religion and women. My advice to him is to find a life of simplicity and look at the music industry for what it is, and take away what others in the game are taking away....the MONEY. Only you can decide how to use it and spend it. Just remember though, we all have to grow old and surely nothing lasts forever.

So it is my hope that D'Angelo will come back strong and bestow upon his listeners his gift of voice whether it be catering to the fan-base of women or using it to express what lies within him. the best to you my brother.

12. This is directed to those who are supportive of D'Angelo's comeback. This brother is very talented and upon recognizing that we all are impressionable to some degree, I believe those who really care for his general well-being instead of his potential for making money, should assist him in keeping his head directed towards a positive outlook in life and let this brother use what God gave him....his voice.

He puts me in the mind of Marvin Gaye and as we know he too had a difficult time dealing with fame, religion and women. My advice to him is to find a life of simplicity and look at the music industry for what it is, and take away what others in the game are taking away....the MONEY. Only you can decide how to use it and spend it. Understand it is how you use it and not to be vain or caught by the glamour and fame. He as many others should take the high ground by living a life that is positive and productive making a difference in this life for others to follow as an example.... such as your son. Just remember though, we all have to grow old and surely nothing lasts forever.

So it is my hope that D'Angelo will come back strong and bestow upon his listeners his gift of voice whether it be catering to the fan-base of women or using it to express what lies within him. The
best to you my brother.

15. Longevity is the key in the business. Life has a wife of getting back what we take from it. All that money and success and to let yourself go like tht. Thats a real shame. If he was in fact relying on a certain targeted audience based on his good looks,he is about to be one broke knucklehead! Good luck D. I mean it homie!
