UPDATE: Morgan Freeman Seriously Injured In Mississippi Car Crash - BUT WILL BE OK

Posted Aug 4th 2008 4:28PM by Wilson Morales
Filed under: It's All Reel

Update: From The Clairon-Ledger, Actor Morgan Freeman suffered some broken bones in a car accident Sunday, but will recover, friends said this afternoon.

Freeman, 71, and a passenger, Demaris Meyer, age unknown, were airlifted to a Memphis hospital following a single-car accident around 11:30 pm. Meyer's condition was not immediately available.

Freeman's business partner, Bill Luckett of Clarksdale, visited with the actor at the hospital today and said Freeman will be fine.

"He's resting quietly and has some fractures. Nothing life-threatening. Nothing permanent," Luckett said. "He's in good spirits, but he's in some pain."

Filmmaker Paul Saltzman said Freeman suffered a broken shoulder and a broken arm and expected recovery time will be six to eight weeks.

According to CBS news, Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was injured in a car accident late Sunday night and is in a hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Kathy Stringer said Freeman, 71, is in serious condition. The hospital is about 90 miles north of the accident scene in rural Tallahatchie County in the Mississippi Delta.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams confirmed Freeman was in a wreck shortly before midnight Sunday, but said he was still gathering information and had few details Monday.

Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, said he arrived at the accident scene on Mississippi Highway 32 soon after it happened about 4 miles west of Charleston, not far from where Freeman owns a home with his wife.

McFerrin said it appeared that Freeman's car was airborne went it left the highway and landed in a ditch.

'They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle,' McFerrin said. 'He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point.'

McFerrin said bystanders converged on the scene trying to get a glimpse of the actor.

When one person tried to snap a photo with a cell phone camera, Freeman joked, 'no freebies, no freebies,' McFerrin said.

The hospital where Freeman is being treated is commonly known as The Med, and is an acute-care teaching facility that serves patients within 150 miles of Memphis.

3. I wish Mr. Freeman and his companion a speedy recovery. He is truly one the great actors of our time. I met him briefly at a function for Black Business leaders, in 2000, and he was most gracious and down to earth. He posed for numerous pictures and signed programs for all who asked.

15. Hi,
My prayers go out to Morgan and his family. I am sure the man upstairs said, it's not time to take this soul yet simply because, humanity and the penquins still need him. He has given too much as an artist and a family man, has handled his business with humility. And most importantly, has not gotten his long over due Kennedy Center Honors! Why has that taken so long?

Love you Easy Reader,

S. Willis
