Paula Patton Talks 'Swing Vote'

Posted Jul 31st 2008 10:59AM by Wilson Morales
Filed under: It's All Reel

Just when it's tough out there for a female to get quality roles, Paula Patton has manage to score not just one, but two good roles this August, The first of them is a role opposite Kevin Costner in 'Swing Vote'.

'Swing Vote', which opens on August 1st, deals with the story of an election set somewhere in the near future where Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner), a lovable loser, who is coasting through a life and has not a political thought in his head, is thrust into an improbable dilemma. In response, he is coaxed on by his 12-year-old daughter Molly (Madeline Carroll) to take more of a serious approach to life. Molly runs the household and sees an opportunity on election day to energize her father. The election is a "dead heat" with the sole deciding ballot in the hands of a mystified Bud, who is being wooed by candidates from both sides.

Patton plays a reporter who tries to use this situation as a vehicle to get out of town for the big leagues

What attracted you to this role?

Paula Patton: I read the script and I laughed out loud. This is a film that I want to be a part of. I just thought that it was so witty and well thought out and heartfelt; and I really liked the character. It was a character that I had not played before but I thought she was really interesting. She's this ambitious girl from a small town and looking for a way out and her ambitions get the best of her. So the question goes – how far is she willing to go to get ahead? Everyone in this film is questioning themselves. They are allowing the media circus to come in and twist their lives around.

Have you been in a position where you had to make a decision to determine the outcome of a situation?

PP: It probably started with what college you wanted to go to, but not as monumental as deciding who will be the next president of the United States.

Did you do any research for the character you played as a reporter?

PP: Absolutely, I always like to do research to the lives that any of the characters that I play and I followed around Antoinette Antonio. She's a journalist newscaster in New Mexico and I got to learn what's it like to be a journalist in a small town.

How was working with Madeline and Kevin (Costner)?

PP: Madeline is the next Jodie Foster. She's a magnificent actress. She can cry on cue. She's smart and funny and everything you want her to be and she's 8 years old. Kevin is just as great and a veteran and I tried to pick up as much as I can from him. He's generous and when you are doing a scene with him, he makes sure you give him your best performance. It was a really wonderful collaborative process. To make people laugh in a comedy is a gift and he made people laugh.

What do you think the message is with this film?

PP: The message is that we have to stop being so apathetic. I know that the world is busy and crazy that we live in. it's hard to care about anything when we are thinking about putting gas in our car and putting food on the table for the kids, but we have to remember to be civic minded. If we don't we are going to be in a situation that we have no control over. I also think we have to be politically active. In the end you have family and you keep your family close, and that is what's it all about.

1. Your are soo beautiful.... Can I have your phone # :-)

Dwain at 2:02PM on Aug 2nd 2008

2. 'You know how Blackmen role.' You won't find too many of us who respect Ms. Patton, or appreciate her opinion(s), because she's been contaminated. Her views are skewed by marriage to a white male (Robin Thicke; with his feminine name, "Robin.").

She also has this mixed kind of, gitty acting style. She's not Black enough for our children. She'll make all our girls want non-Black boys. She's nothing but the new "Whoopi" and Halle Bare-ry!

Regardless of any person's excuse to cross-marry, it's against the 10TH COMMANDMENT. The white male has simply flushed it before our eyes to make us forget God's Will--while they have all kinds of intimate pleasures with our sin-sick (money, popularity, vanity) women.

Just allow her to ask Jill Scott, or the other Afrikan dark-skinned women, "Do you think I'd have his role if I were your complexion?"

3. Not for nothing (because everything about my culture is SOMETHING)but this young woman is pretty and all but why is there such a HUGE Black-OUT in the media with our B E A U T I F U L dark complexion sisters (and brothers too)! She is pretty but what about Kelita Smith (Bernie Mac Show-his wife) and Camille Wimbush, the young girl that played Vanessa (his niece)? Come on folks, help me out with our beautiful dark complexion sisters. I'm drawing a blank. List them. Jill Scott, .... Who else? Help a brotha out!

4. I think that she's a beautiful woman. As far as what happened to the dark-skinned brothas and sistas?!?! Well... ask the directors, producers, and anyone else involved with making a movie!! Don't blame it on the lighter skinned ones! lol... Sidney, Denzel, Morris, Eddie, Will (will's not dark, but he isn't light either)!!! I agree with wanting to see more BLACK PEOPLE in the movies though! Cause I'm getting tired of them recycling these actors. But on the other hand, we can't look for help if we aren't helping ourselves! How many of YOU went out to SUPPORT the new movie with Eddie Murphy and Gabrielle Union?!?! ...exactly. Anyway..... from one 'light skinned' sista to another, I'm happy for you Mrs. Paula Patton!!! God Bless

5. Hey Dwain, You know she's married to Robin Thicke, right!

Erin at 6:37PM on Aug 2nd 2008

6. i am a brown skin woman, i have always be attracted to my black men, but black or white if you truly love a person color should not matter, you can love people outside of your race, and remember everyone came from Africa so what is the big deal, live and let live

evelyn at 6:48PM on Aug 2nd 2008

7. Do your research. Robin Thicke's mother is Black and his Father is White. In America, White Americans view him as Black. As you should know, sometimes the product of an interracial relationship produces a child that is light-in-color to the extent that he or she can be viewed as White to a society that is not aware of their heritage.

8. You just knew one of the caucazoids would try to pick her up. It never fails. I thought i recognized her from somewhere. Shes almost Halle Berryish in that she looks like she could be half black and half white. Sounds like it will be a fun movie to watch. Anyway sistas Im here for yall so dont act like all brothas want white women. As well I know that all sistas dont want white men. I love my Beautiful Black Queens...

Free Me at 8:21PM on Aug 2nd 2008

9. I have nothing against women of color who love white men. My only problem is that us brothas aren't out there with the same zeal attacking sweet young lite meat.

This chick is irrelevant to me, as are Halle Berry, Sanaa Lathan or any of the other black women who have allowed white men into their beds. It is time for us as Black men to take the fight to the white man and start to bang around with Heather and Amber and Erin and Samantha and all of the other beautiful white women in this world.

We are fighting a losing battle being concerned with who these black women bed - it's time that we take the fight to him. As long as we fight this war on our own turf (black women) we will be forever losers.

Take my advice and follow my lead - indulge in white women. Instead of taking a sex tour of South America, Brazil and the like (where the white man has already been, hundreds of years ago when the Europeans shipped thousands of white men-with Black people- to the continent, wiped out the indigenous man and took his woman and black women and repopulated an entire continent and race while the Black man stood by the side and accepted his left-overs) take a sex tour of Northwest Europe, where the chicks love our style, swagger and skin color (among other things).

I'll be talking to you brothas later. Peace!

10. Paulu i feel that you are a very attractive woman and
not because we share the same last name.

Buddy5758 at 11:07PM on Aug 2nd 2008

11. Wardell, you idiot, what hole have you just crawled from??? Black men have been banging white women for many years. Did you just catch a break and luck up on some white puntag or are you simply hating on the beautiful Paula Patton and her obviously devoted white husband? Black women are dating and marrying white men all across the country lately. If you don't care about it then don't blog about it...jerk!

12. I must say that I am proud of my sistas for exploring other options. I too am curious about what its like to date a guy of a different ethnicity. And before you start to judge me, i am 5'8, 170, real hair, no kids, own my own home, work as an auditor and i love the Lord. I have dated nothing but black men, mind you i am not her to put my brotha's down, but something just isn't right. I've noticed that the men of today aren't like the men that grew up in the time of my uncles. father, and grandfather. It seems like less and less men know how to change tires, change the oil, fix things around the house, mow the lawn, etc. The last guy i dated got a flat in the middle of the night and called me to help him change the tire. Please, one of you men, explain what is happening.

14. For my brother Laymen.AS you stated that the tenth
commandment spoke against a Bi-racial marriage. But
in truth it does not,in Numbers it speaks about Moses
AAron and Miriam moses brother and sister.I will not
state what it says but every one thats on this blog
can read or they would not be on here.Read Numbers
12: 1to16. I think we all should not pass judgement
on any one. Brother Buddy5758

15. Robin and Paula make an awesome couple. They are both beautiful and talented, and appear to be happy with one another. I read they’ve been together for over ten years (high school sweethearts) and still
going strong! Now that’s commitment!! And as far as him being a "white" man is not even a consideration. It’s funny, when I see black male entertainers, athletics, etc. on TV and in print, especially videos, what type of woman is hanging on his arm? Certainty not a brown or dark-skinned sista. (But we all know she was there during HIS struggle.) If she’s not white, she’s damn near, and nobody says a thing. But when a black women is hand-holding a white guy, ahhhhhhhh, here we go…… I say, as long as
he (white, black or other) treated me like a queen, and with respect, I wouldn’t give a shit about who said what regarding our relationship.

Sista’s, life is too short to trip. Find happiness in what ever color makes you happy.

GO LUCKY! at 5:22PM on Aug 3rd 2008
