Politics & Pandering - McCain & the NAACP

Posted Jul 16th 2008 12:34PM by Branden Cobb
Filed under: BlackSpin, Elections, Barack Obama, John McCain

Presumptive Republican Presidential Nominee Senator John McCain spoke at the NAACP annual Convention in Cincinnati on Wednesday hoping to gain more of the black vote. He discussed his concern over the education of black youth; laying out his plans to issue private school vouchers for children attending failing public schools.

"All of that went over well with the teachers union, but where does it leave families and their children who are stuck in failing schools?" the Arizona senator asked. "No entrenched bureaucracy or union should deny parents that choice and children that opportunity."

He received mostly polite applause in a room with some empty seats, two days after Obama received a thunderous reception from a standing-room only audience, hoping to see him become the first black president of the United States.

Obama vs. McCain - The Issues

    Foregin Policy

Obama supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions; Expand our diplomatic presence, strengthen NATO and make Israeli-Palestinian conflict a key diplomatic priority; Fight global poverty and seek new partnerships in Asia

McCain plans to fight violent Islamic extremists and terrorist tactics; increase the size of the military; sanctions on Russia until Putin exits Chechnya; Urge Japan to open economy to ensure Asian recovery; No diplomatic or trade relations with Cuba, Iran or North Korea; solidarity with U.S. allies.

    Gay Marriage

Obama says "Marriage has religious and social connotations, and I consider marriage to be between a man and a woman." He wants states to decide this and supports legal benefits for same-sex partners.

McCain says he opposes a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, wants individual states to decide the issue. Supports legal benefits for same-sex partners.

    Enviornment and Climate Change

Obama's plan calls for a reduced carbon emissions 80 ppercent by 2050; invest in a clean energy future; support next generation biofuels; and set a path to oil independence.

McCain calls for climate policy built on scientifically-sound evidence; mandatory emission reduction targets; facilitate international efforts.

    Immigration

Obama's plan for immigration calls for securing boarders; must fix the dysfunctional immigration bureaucracy and increase the number of legal immigrants; Bring people out of the shadows and work with Mexico; cracking down on employers who hire undocumented immigrants.

McCain's plan for immigration includes deporting some of the 2 million illegal immigrants who committed crimes; Certify border is secure; only then allow guest workers; McCain stands against amnesty plans for illegal citizens; Comprehensive reform requires temporary worker program.

    The War

Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. He has called for no permanent bases in Iraq; Obama plans to make it clear to the Iraqi government and military that the U.S. is leaving.

    McCain's plan for Iraq includes succeeding before leaving. He wants to put international pressure on Syria and Iran for aiding in the aided and abetted the violence in Iraq;
    improve Iraq's economy.

    Education

Obama's education plan includs reforming No Child Left Behind; Address the dropout crisis; recruit, train and tetain better teachers; make the first $4,000 of a college education
    completely free throught tax credits.

McCain's plan states if a school will not change, the students should be able to change schools; place parents and children at the center of the education process; create a school systems based on competition and not low standards.

    Health Care

Obama's plan call for coverage of uninsured Americans through a national health plan with affordable premiums. Obama has also called for a National Health Insurance Exchange act as a watchdog group to reform the private insurance market; Mandatory coverage of children and better
    organized state heal care plans.

McCain's health care plan is focused to reduce spending and extenting more health care options to those who are typically uninsured. His plan calls for pushing Health savings Accounts; work with states to establish a guaranteed access plan.

    Economy

Obama's plan for the economy included middle-class tax relief; Creating green jobs; protect homeownership and crack down on mortgage fraud. end predatory credit card practices.

McCain's Plan for the economy includes eliminating broken and wasteful government programs; a middle-class tax cut; Social Security reform; lower trade barriers.

His NAACP speech comes on the heels of a joint New York Times/CBS News poll conducted from July 7-14 that found that black voters favor Democratic Senator Obama over McCain, 89 to 2 percent. It will be an uphill battle for McCain since historically, Republicans do not win a large portion of the black vote. In fact, President Bush received just 11 percent from African American voters when he ran against former Senator John Kerry in 2004.

McCain's personal record will make the road to garnering the black vote difficult. After all, he is the same congressman who originally voted against the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday; his state was one of the last in the country to honor the slain civil rights leader. McCain is also anti-affirmative action if it includes quotas, while he does support diversity. In 2000, he also stirred up controversy by refusing to take a consistent stand on whether or not the confederate flag should fly over the South Carolina state capitol.

Then there was his decision, along with other top Republican candidates, to not attend a televised a debate focused on key issues for Black and Hispanic voters last year. And of course, one can not overlook his decision to skip this very convention last year as well. Finally, he voted twice against amendments to establish a commission to investigate the government's mistakes following Hurricane Katrina.

He has made strides to improve his image with blacks by becoming the first Republican candidate to visit the site of the famous civil rights march in Selma, Alabama, where state troopers and local police stormed and beat about 800 people marching for voting rights in 1965. His idea of school choice is also expected to strike a positive chord with voters. Certainly, he is also more moderate than most Republicans on issues of abortion and immigration. Time will only tell if he can do what Republicans before him have not, which is to sway more black voters to cast their ballots for his party.

1. Thanks McCain....School choice/private voucher will help parents with children that are trapped in failing schools.

This issue along should mobilze Black Americans to think about voting for McCain. That is if you are concern about your child education instead of being emotional about electing a Black President.

Don't fall for the Democrats spin that schools need more money...when all the money in the world will not save the government control public schools.

Only an alternative/choice, which will force public schools to compete, will improve public schools.

The rich already have a choice...they gave up public schools long ago. Now, it is time for the poor and the middle class to have an opportunity for better schools.

THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE...STUDY THE ISSUES.

2. I have studied the issues Jarvis and McSame is not going to provide tax relief to anybody earning below a million dollars, his economic policy is non-existent, McSame's economic adviser is Phil Gramm who is the harbinger of the current housing market crisis, McSame has a non-existent immigration policy, all he says about education in his policy papers is that he'll have some version of the current spectacularly failing NCLB and he has a pisspoor women's/GLBT rights records, never having actually voted to uphold abortion rights and not even supporting them.
He voted against having Dr.MLKjr holiday in AZ and has a poor civil rights record. He skipped the GI Bill vote, so he hasn't done anything substantial for the veterans except invoke his own war-record at every given opportunity, he doesn't know the difference between Shia and Sunni and the difference between Czech Republic and the erstwhile Czechoslovakia.

He skipped the vote to have medicare bill which even Ted Kennedy came from his sick bed and voted for on the senate floor recently.
So you Jarvis and McSame are both morons of the highest order if you think you can fool others who have followed and read up on his non-existent platitude-filled policy.

3. Jarvis, I disagree with you. My wife is in the school system and my mother just retired this year after 35 years in the public school system. The problem is the money, teachers need more money, updated material, more technical equipment, and the money needs just don't stop. Schools have been denied funds for so long that the government band aid the issues up to use the money for other reasons. More money in our school system will lead to a better education.

4. I have to give it to Sen. McCain he spoke well at the NACCP Convention today. He ran circles around Sen. Obama's appearance there where he looked like a wounded animal and was just there for a chance to reply to the numerous black fathers who are repudiating him for calling us "boys". McCain was received with repeated applause unlike Sen. Obama whose reception was at best lukewarm. Sen. McCain showed some moving respect for how far Sen. Obama has come and paid heartwarming respect to what the NAACP has done to make America a better country. Sen. McCain went on to give specifics as how he intends to improve education for black schools that lag behind in this country. On the other hand Sen. Obama seemed obsessed with shoving off the criticism he has been receiving for harping on black parental responsibility. Sen. Obama seemed so lost at one time he scratched his head, bringing to mind to me why some blacks have received the notoriety of being called "Uncle Toms". Clearly, the flak Sen. Obama has been receiving from the black communities for his aire of elitism has taken its toll on his demeanor of upbeat confidence. Yet, rather than apologize to black fathers Sen. Obama chose to fall on his sword, by saying he is not going to stop. Sen. Obama tried arkwardly to bestow some praise upon a few Civil Rights leaders but noticeably he did not mention Rev. Jesse Jackson. Looking at an odd Sen. Obama at the NAACP Convention I got the feeling that I was looking at a demoralized man, gone was the previous luster. He seemed only a shell of his former self. How low key was the Obama debut before the NAACP compared to how Rev. Wright brougnt down the house when he spoke there. Rev. Wright received almost endless applause from the thousands of blacks and whites who were present. That is one reason I was so shocked when Sen. Obama plunged a knife into Dr. Wright's back after the event. With Sen. Obama abandoning his church to snob the courageous white priest Father Pfleger, whom I consider a modern day John Brown, that was enough for me to terminate my support for Sen. Obama's campaign. I saw in Sen. Obama a man void of dignity and willing to sell his soul to the devil to become President. I could never respect such a man, I don't care if he is the first "black" person to win a major party's nomination for president. I was brought up to respect elders and hold in reverence the things of God. The demoralization of Sen. Obama and his defeat in the general election is the price he pays for his disrespect of the Man of God, God's House, and God's people. The wrath of God is terrible and swift. Sen. Obama thought he was above everybody else and that he could go it alone, it was God that cut him down to size not Rev. Jesse Jackson. Rev. Jackson was just the bearer of the punishment. To challenge God or even conduct yourself that way is an invitation to God's wrath. Remember the Titanic or the USS Thresher. When launched the Titanic was said to be unsinkable. It sank on its maiden voyage! The nuclear submarine USS Thresher when launched was said to be the dream weapon capable of destroying the entire USSR by itself. Its said the the Thresher was the only US weapon that ever made the Soviet leadership shutter. The Thresher was lost at sea on its maiden voyage! Whenever man has styled himself above God or not needing God disaster has happened. Seeing Obama crushed all should remember that God cannot be left out of man's plans and He cannot be disrespected. Obama brought it on himself. So rattled Sen. Obama was at the event he ended his speech with "God bless the NAACP, but immediately corrected himself with, "God bless the United States of America."

5. To NC4Obama:

My wife and I also work in public schools. I also have many relatives that are teachers. Privately, they agree that the bureacracy and RED TAPE associated with public schools will never improve the public schools. That is why many teachers send their own children to private schools.

School budgets are up all over the country with poor results. Teachers, although very important, needs to stop complaining about salaries.

1. They have summers off for 2 months or more,
2. 2 weeks off for Christmas,
3. week off for spring break,
4. and in many districts a week off for Thanksgiving.
5. Plus a planning period during the school day.

Many teachers are more concern about keeping their jobs than the education of children.
The poor suffer the most in the government run public schools.
You will never get all of these perks in Corporate America...especially during your first year on the job.

Today, Administrators and Teachers know the deal. They know all they have to do is scream "More Money" and the public will raised taxes for them.

Administrators and teachers also know that if parents had a choice, they could no longer used money as an excuse.

THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE...STUDY THE ISSUES

6. Peace,
As for Sen. McCain's ability to attract the black electorate in the coming general election, it remains to be seen if his overtures to the black community are accepted as being genuine. However, as the election looms closer and closer, we find an overwhelming propensity by the mainstream media and the blogosphere to sensationalize Sen. Obama as much as possible (ie. New Yorker Cover controversy). We, as informed black voters, must continue to participate in local elections/politics in order to impact/influence the black community's agenda in various local politics throughout the U.S. If we do not focus our energies on empowering our politics vis-a-vis the local agendas that influence our communities then we endanger our political futures to the point where we will not be a major player when decisions are made that determine whether we will capitalize or benefit from those decisions. As for presidential politics, it is important that we build bridges with the Republicans and their agendas/politicians so that we will have leverage when it comes time to call in our political markers so that we will not become marginalized by the efforts of those who would have us to exist only on a marginal basis.

8. What did McCain really think about Martin Luther King, Jr. and when did he think it?

In his NAACP speech, McCain describes his reaction to the news of the assassination of Dr. King. McCain says that he was, “feeling just as everyone else did back home, only perhaps even more uncertain and alarmed for my country in the darkness that was then enclosed around me and my fellow captives.”

McCain further added, “The enemy had correctly calculated that the news of Dr. King’s death would deeply wound morale, and leave us worried and afraid for our country.”

On April 4, 2008, McCain was asked why he initially voted against an MLK holiday. His response was that he changed his mind when he “began to learn” about what a transcendent figure Dr. King was.

Which McCain should we believe - the POW who knew that King’s assassination would deeply wound morale, or the policitican who began to learn more about the civil rights leader?

10. Whether McCain, Obama or Clinton wins, it's going to be a difficult term in office, with the economy sagging. I suggest we elect the best person for the job. I think Senator Clinton has the upper hand on economic isssues and should be written in.

11. Earth to Analyst, what planet are you from, and what kind of drugs are you using that causes instant ignorance?

arkangel at 11:32AM on Jul 17th 2008

12. The NAACP are a bunch of racists, because like 90% of blacks in America, they are supporting Obama only because he is black. If McCain chose to bypass a speech to the NAACP, he'd be ridiculed as being anti-black ... and when he spoke to them, they gave him a cool response. I saw where members of the audience were even reading the newspaper while he spoke ... how rude.

Gina at 12:11PM on Jul 17th 2008

13. No one is asking that you vote for Obama because of his race or skin color. It appears that we have some blacks that are hating on our own race. Vote for him because he is a outstanding candidate, if you think he is evil, then because he is the lesser of the two evils. Earth to Analyst, you are a very misguided person if you think that McCain is the salvation of education. You know that blacks need to take responsibility (some blacks). There was a time that we had values and now we are a declining race. We need to take responsibility. I am not depending on a teacher to ensure that my children are taught. That's my job! We (blacks and whites) need to turn off the television and spend more quality time with our children. The family altar (who and whatever you worship) needs to be established. Stop eating out of everybodies kitchen, cook sometimes! This is our country, not Obama's or McCains' but yours and mine. I support and will vote for Obama, but I pray for all parties, because we truly need the blessings of GOD.

14. Failing schools are FULL OF STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE to FAIL !! YES FAILURE in the classroom is a CONSCIOUS CHOICE today in 2008. For the most part teachers do their jobs. In many inner city schools VERY DISRUPTIVE students are allowed to remain in the classroom;they CURSE OUT,name call,TAUNT,LIE, etc.and EVEN THREATEN the teacher and other students.

To JARVIS it is VERY OBVIOUS THAT YOU HAVE NOT STUDIED THE USA housing market !!! When you conduct your study you will discover that a teachers in cities like Los Angeles, San Frencisco, Honolulu, Boston and New York City NEED A RAISE...YES MUCH MORE MONEY to qualify for a median priced home. Which in many cases doesn't look so nice !!!

I recently retired after 31 years; 30 in LAUSD a district with VERY HIGH TURNOVER due to VERY LOW PAY!!! As a matter of FACT in the greater L.A. area an apartment for rent (1 bedroom) in a decent neighborhood starts at about $1,300 per month. In the neighborhood where I live it's about $1,650.00 per month. YES,YES,YES HIGHER SALARIES for teachers just like the executives at IBM have an income whereby they can purchase a nice house and so on.

JARVIS you underate our profession and you have REALLY underated yourself !! PLEASE STUDY THE ECONOMIC side Salaries. TEACHERS AREN'T MISSIONARIES !!!
