Tasered While Black - 21st Century Whips

Posted Jul 15th 2008 10:00AM by Carmen Dixon
Filed under: BlackSpin, Crime and Courts

Did you know that Tasers have been involved in more than three hundred deaths?

Dozens of others have suffered Taser-related injuries. I respect that sometimes force is needed to subdue a non-compliant suspect. And I'm not suggesting that police shouldn't defend themselves against violent attacks.

However, because Tasers are classified as "non-lethal" they are not routinely used to protect cops from deadly force – guns do that.

So how is it that increasingly cops with Tasers are becoming judge, jury and executioner of people who, by laws of the Constitution, are innocent until proven guilty?

You shouldn't have to die because you're being unruly. We are a better country than that...

Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International have long argued that most of the deaths associated with Tasers are related to multiple uses or prolonged usage of the weapon on the same person. Since 2001, there have been over 300 deaths that Amnesty has studied where Tasers were involved - a significant number involved either multiple uses or prolonged usage of the Taser. In over 20 of those cases, coroners have listed Tasers as the contributing factor. In only 10 percent of the cases was the Tasered individual actually carrying a weapon.

The problem is starting to gain more attention from diverse groups. One of the most comprehensive sites, operated by African American Political Pundit, is tracking Taser incidents and calls itself "Tasered While Black." Its objective is to call out the problems with Tasers:

We are not against Taser use as an alternative to deadly force. We are however against Taser abuse by rogue cops who consider the Taser an apartheid electrocution whip of the 21st century

In March, a 17 year old black student, Darryl Turner was killed by Taser. The Charlotte, North Carolina coroner has determined that the Taser wrecked his heart. Here is one reaction to Darryl Turner's death as shared by Wayne Hicks of the Electronic Village blog:

It stuns me that anyone would think that the police are justified in killing this young man. He did not have a weapon. Police said Turner had been threatening the officer after having disagreement with his employer. It just seems that the penalty for disagreeing with your Food Lion boss should not be execution

Turner's case is so outrageous, that even the AARP has called the situation out, demanding that police and prosecutors reveal how many times Turner was tased.

You will be hearing more, much more about Tasers in the near future. Be on the lookout and stay tuned.

1. "Threatening an officer" is not exactly a smart move on anyone's part! No matter how angry a person may be, threatening a police officer is a sure recipe to get tasered or otherwise put out of commission. Mr. Turner's death is regretable certainly, but perhaps it will serve as notice to other angry people to be cautious about what you say or do to a police officer.

2. People must learn to respect the law and the police officers that enforce these laws. Sure there are police officers that get out of hand and should be dealt with thru the law as well.

Look, stay out of trouble and teach your children to do the same.

Also, everyone needs access to a good attorney and legal counseling.

5. police tasters whites less offen than blacks for the same crimes

6. Tasered while black is way better than shot while black. The realty is that the African Americans have significantly high crime rate. Bashing taser will just lead to more police shooting of black people. Many more Darryl Turners would die because tasers were taken away for one Darryl Turner. Has AI bothered to do a research to find out how many people died of police-involved shootings since 2001? How many of these people would have lived today if police had used tasers instead? There are thousands in-custody deaths since 2001 without tasers. Most people actually died of drug-overdose or excited delirium. One-sided statistics will cause more harm to black people if AI's recommendation is followed.

7. The posts that I have read are unbelievable. It seems that most are condoning the killing of an angry teen, as we parents know teens can be VERY dramatic, however if the police knew he was unarmed, why not cuff and detain him, not taser him to his death. Had this happened to any of our kids how many would still agree with the polices tactics? Not I! Bottom line is of course police have to protect themselves, but not at the cost of an innocent, but angry child. Seems if we aren't on the receiving end, we can spin any story to our liking, me included, but not this one, not ever.

8. any of you can say what you wont,,i dont give a f*** who you are a badge or not if you hit me with a taser i,m hitting you with hot lead...a black man will kill another black man for steeping on his shoes or any form of dis respect..and the police just dog blacks out..because we dont stand up for sh** ..a few years ago a sheriff tased my nephew and took him to jail..when my brother told me this i went to the sheriff office and whent the f*** off and got my nephew..the word(out of town lawyer ) carries a lot of weight..ya,ll can let the police keep f***ing ya,ll up if you wont to but there not killing me and mine....black men stop F***ing up & stand up....

9. Wow- Tasered While Black... that says enough ha? Whether you are black or white if it is needed then it is needed, yes there should be some restraints, but give me a break with the "its cause I'm black!" Blacks are just as prejudice of whites as they say whites are of Blacks. And Mr. Frank (#9) Your remarks and spelling and vulgar language is why you are treated the way you are. I believe there is more to the story of this tragedy, it is not so cut and dry as people think the police where totally in the wrong, Walk a tiny bit in there shoes, and see what you would do at times like this.

10. This is a seventeen year old. At that age everything seems like a good idea until something bad happens. The cops, fueled by our racist society, feel that a young black man is a threat. It is not just in your hometown it is everywhere. If this young man were of a different color this would be a cause for us to look at getting rid of tasers altogether.
Now as for the ones who said the black guy could have been shot than tasered, well just hope it does not happen to your loved one and it just happen to kill them. We need to stop being callous and uncaring about what is happening to our young people.

11. I agree with you Frank 100 percent. Cops think they can don anything when they want and how they want to. I remember seeing a cop throw a half can of budweiser out of his patrol car while he was driving. So I got the can and kept the contents in the can and picked it up with a pair if gloves. So that I won't disturb the fingerprints. I took myself to the police station and talk to the desk and they hurriedly took me to the back room. First they asked for my drivers license and then told me to wait after about 10 minutes I guess they couldn't find any warrents. The Sgt took the can out of the bag with his bare hands and acted like he were inspected the fingerprints. Of course I knew what he was doing! He said maybe the car that threw the beer can was a car that the police sold to the public, I said right: with the bubble lights still on top! Anyway they kept inspected like he was really looking for something and finally said they will give me a call if they find something. So I got up to leave but I left my keys on the seat of the chair. So when I finally realized what i done and came back in to retrieve my keys, I heard them laughing and just caught the sgt throwing the budweiser can into the trash. I felt awkward when his eyes met mine so I got my keys in a hurry and left. So trust me Cops about SH-T! So when they get killed in the line of duty I feel cheerful and happy! George Scott

12. The fact that a young Black male died at the hands of the police is not something unusual. Even the fact that he was killed by the "Taser gun" isn't unusual. IMO two things need to be addressed to improve the use on Tasers. First, police officers need more training and more of an education. Having just a high school diploma should not suffice as an education for "LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS." That lack of education is evident, considering the number of police involved shootings as well as the petty offenses some people are stopped and arrested for. Secondly, we as a community have to start policing the police. They are there to protect and serve not patrol and control, therr badge doesn't give them complete say so over what we do. Remember. police officers are "PUBLIC SERVANTS," we shouldn't fear them, they should fear our political rights and affiliations (which many of us do not use).

14. I live in Pensacola, Fl and we have had serious problems with taser issues over the years. We held several informative rallies, radio info and creating a shirt condeming killing with tazers. One man lost his eye due to tazering. Another was allegedly tazered after being watered down in the jail shower by the cops.

I haven't heard about any problems with tazering lately, but we can't go to sleep at the wheel.

Peace

15. I remember in the 1960's the police used cattle prods to subdue the Blacks in the inner city. They were declared illegal because they were killing people... stopping their hearts. Tasers are just a newly-shaped cattle prod and we're stupid enough to let the police get away with and even support their use. The fact is, tasers are dangerous when abused and can be and have been lethal weapons. TWB (Tasered While Black)... Now that's telling the truth! #2 said "People must learn to respect the law and the police officers that enforce these laws." What a crock! Police have forgotten that they are public servants and Blacks are part of the community they are supposed to protect and serve!! So now is it against the law to disagree with a police officer? I disagree with #13 that police need more education because even a college degree cannot educate a person's heart.
