Forbes: "Tiger Woods Will Be First Billionaire Athlete"

Posted Jul 11th 2008 12:26PM by Quibian Salazar-Moreno
Filed under: Casually Obsessed

Even though Tiger Woods is done playing golf for the year due to injury, Forbes Magazine is reporting that Tiger is on his way to exceed $1 billion in earning by 2010. Woods won the U.S. Open last month playing on a bad knee winning more than $1.3 million and last year he earned a total of $117 million in winnings and endorsements. As far as the billion dollar mark in 2010, Forbes' calculation was based on Woods' estimated earnings in the annual rich list dating back to 1996, when he turned pro, and also credited the world number one golfer with annualized investment returns of 8 percent.

"Based on those criteria, we project Tiger Woods should join our list of the world's billionaires in 2011," said the magazine. "It will be an unprecedented occurrence."Forbes also mentioned other very rich athletes, including billionaire champion sailor Ernesto Bertarelli, but the difference is that Tiger is earning his loot through sports, while Bertarelli earned his fortune by other means. Most of Tiger's loot comes from endorsement deals with the likes of Nike, Gillette, Buick, and Gatorade. He's earned $90 million so far this year in endorsements and over $750 million in his career so far. Hey Tiger, can we just get one of those measly millions of yours? Just one.

1. An anglophile with a billion dollars. Can't respect a person that doesn't realizes the ingredience which makes him special. It is the melanin which separates him from his peers. But typical of anglophiles they appreciate the innate gifts which make them unique but quickly wish to discard the wrapping the gifts comes in, i.e. Michael Jackson. Have no love for Tiger after he went out of his way to distance himself from Blacks but not the other nationalities in his bloodline. The hell with this mutant and that mutant he is holding.

2. Dre, yes, we do not choose to be born. Our Creator has allowed us time on this earth some for a short time and other's longer. My point is our Creator gives us "free will" to make choices in our life. Sometimes we make the right choices and sometimes we don't. Some of the choices we make can be devastating, sometimes a blessing but these choices are ours. Tiger Woods made the choice to marry a white woman, his father was married to an asian woman before he died. This father and son chose not to make a connection with black women. So understand that it can be a hard pill to swallow when another young rich black man makes a choice to skip over the women of african american decent. How can one be happy for this man when you know that his reality excludes women that look like him. Full lips and all!

3. That ingredient might just be that he CHOSE to become a golfer and practiced to hone his skill. It may also be his strong will to succeed. Couple that with his dad's guidance and connections and you've got a recipe for Tiger's success. Michael's no different. So what he was born black. I was born black and became professional. I chose to. I can't stand some of my black brothers and sisters and am happy to distance them from me. Same with those who aren't black. The men you purport to characterize as sellouts are people blessed by God with talent. They became successful. Michael CHOSE to be a singer/musician and practiced his skill. If melanin were the sole cause of success, then perhaps many of our people would be enjoying the successes so enjoyed by people with a lesser dose of melanin. Not sure if you are equating innate with melanin. If so, you're doing the apples vs. oranges argument which is shot down in college lecture halls around the world everyday. If you were a debater, you'd get crushed and be left standing with a silly look on your face. Finally, if you really feel so strongly about Tiger and Michael Jackson's choices, you might re-direct your criticism to the Creator. After all, He made us all and gave us the ability to choose. Thank Him for what you've got and move on with your angry self.

4. To the person who left the first comment,

What the hell is wrong with you?

5. I definitely see #1's point to a degree-but #2 and #3 validly point out that hard work, determination and good sound decision making has built him into a billionaire. If he's happy with a white woman so be it. SOME black women are angry and can'tbe worked with and there are some ignorant a-- brothers out there. The world is what it is everyone has a choice how they live thier life...

6. Tiger is a very fine person, one who has terrific skills that enable him to be wealthy and respected. His parents created him, and he is mixed. That's fine. He does NOT consider himself black, because he is not black, he is bi-racial. A perfect example of two people with black-white parents who are so opposite of the other parent in appearance only. The beautiful and talented Mariah Carey looks white, but she is half black. Sen. Obama looks black and considers himself black, yet he is half white. To me, if all people would stop putting a tag on themselves, we would have more harmony in our wonderful country. There are many interracial marriages in varying styles. That is fine, that is what those two people chose, and they don't need to be defined. They are two people, that's it. And my pet peeve is calling blacks African-American. First of all, using hyphens is improper with American. Next, one is only A-A if they come from Africa. Writers, teachers, TV anchors and the guy down the street insist on using A-A, which is totally wrong, because one is using a country to describe a color. Think about it. Does that make sense? Of course not.

7. Tiger has the right to define who he is. He doesn't reject being half black, he just embraces the other half of him, which is Asian.

Blacks should stop trying to take ownership of other successful blacks - they can take care of themselves. The world would be a much better place if those same Blacks would take ownership of those around them that are poor and struggling...but that's asking

8. Don't be jelous!

Q at 10:37PM on Aug 10th 2008

9. Yes, even if you are black you can identify yourself as a white person. That's your business. Blacks hate being black, why not Tiger?

peace at 4:42PM on Aug 12th 2008

10. Sen. Obama gave a short and sweet speech that has never been articulated in a fashion that didn't offend any ethnicity. Yes, Tiger woods is half Black & half Asian, not Black or Asian. Sen. Obama, Halle Berry, Mariah Carey & many more are mixed. They all have the choice to embrace the culture they pefer. To address the comment from: peace, most blacks don't hate being black, they hate being treated differently. Have you ever heard James Brown say, "I'm Black & I'm proud." Anyway, Tiger Woods is a great athlete on is way to becoming a billionaire regardless of what he embraces.

Edward at 4:38PM on Aug 14th 2008

11. Tiger is multi-racial and so are most so called Black Americans. My family is also multiracial and we look black, white and other. Tiger is an American and we need to realize that it's acceptable to be American and a category for multi-racial or mixed needs to be on more applications. African-Americans are from Africa. My family has been here for hundreds of years. Let's celebrate diversity and marry whom you desire. More black women are marrying white men and mixed couples are accepted now in most places.
