The Boondocks, A Product of Pure Genius

Posted Jul 9th 2008 12:00PM by Madison J. Gray
Filed under: BlackSpin

We're reminded from time to time that we need social commentary in cartoon form to help us keep things in perspective.

The cartoonists that people hate the most are usually the smartest. This means that Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder is a genius.

His comic strip is all wit, very abrasive and meant to make your ass uncomfortable. McGruder is as good at pissing off the public gallery as I hope to become one day. ...That's about all the time I'm going to spend sounding like I'm on his nuts. But I really do like the guy. Unfortunately, most of material he uses is stuff that would get me in trouble if I posted it here.

However, there is one vignette (courtesy of YouTube) that I think you'll enjoy.

1. I absolutely love this cartoon, it is my guilt pleasure.

2. Aaron McGruder is da truth!!! I ahve been a fan of his cartoon in the newspaper for years and when it finally became a TV show, I thought I died and went to Heaven. Riley is my favorite character, he says things most of us think, however, if he were my child.....I'd beat the brakes off that lil mofo.

3. I use to love reading the comic in the newspaper. I will say its one thing I wish I had the time for again. With using podcast of the NY Times now I miss out on the comics. The TV show I hear is great but always forget when it comes on. I guess with my new DVR I'll put a timer on it.

4. Thank you for saying this Madison, this is the perspective from which I write also. If you do not have something to say that is controversial, then you have nothing to say!!!

With the advent of the patriot act and the wiretapping and all the other bullshit Americans have learned to endure since the early days of the G.W.Bush administration, it seems like all the strides we made during the sixties of speaking out and putting the popular opinion on blast had become a thing of the past.

Eliteist assholes, being the good little boys and girls they had morphed into, had even taken to protesting to "clean up rap music." The ultimate form of self expression in a free society.

My position: Although I do not like to hear some of the words used, especially by those who think that they can share in the Black experience by taking the short cut to being down simply by rapping about it. I believe that parents should stay home and teach kids what they should or shouldn't say. Not have the state become further involved in our personal business by enacting more blue laws. More laws on the books will only mean more Black men in jail.

If there are two parents then there is less pressure on either one to be close to home at all times. They can both share in this primary duty of parenthood.

An awful lot of those rappers were speaking from the point of view of being raised in a signle parent home or being raised up by grandparents. I think rap and its assault on our senses is a good thing, if only to highlight the lack of leadership and real homes for our children. And the need for two parent families where one reinforces the other to make a strong decent respectful child.

That's some serious mind control when people have become afraid to speak out in a democracy, or is it a de-mockery?
