Serena vs. Venus Part III: The Sisters Meet in Wimbledon Finale Again

Posted Jul 3rd 2008 9:02PM by Quibian Salazar-Moreno
Filed under: Casually Obsessed

Isn't it fresh when the Williams sisters dominate a tournament so much that they end up facing each other in the final? Eff the haters, we love it! On Thursday, Venus Williams secured her final spot first after beating Elena Dementieva of Russia 6-1, 7-6. After the match, Venus hung out to watch her younger sister Serena beat Zheng Jie of China 6-2, 7-6. The two will face each other in the final on Saturday. The last time they met in the finale was in 2003. And if you've seen a Venus-Serena match, you already know that the sisters don't play nice, with Serena holding a 5-1 edge over Venus in Grand Slam title matches, but Venus is the defending Wimbledon champ.

"Our main focus is obviously both of us getting to the final," Venus told ESPN. "Then, from there, it's every Williams for themself."
"We've both been working extremely hard," Serena added. "It's just coming together."

The sisters haven't lost a set in this tournament and are a combined 100-13 at Wimbledon. Who knew that one of the best rivalries in sports would be a sibling rivalry? Especially when they're best friends.

1. I love the comment by the Williams Sisters saying that it does not matter what your rating is going in. It's about your rating when it's over. We all know that the Williams Sisters should be numbers one and two in tennis, but we also know the system when it is trying to gather renewed interest in the sport.

2. Anyone that has played sports at an amateur or high school level (minimum) knows that you don't play to lose. Even if its your sister, all the haters, and speculators that are trying to insinuate that one is throwing the game for the other is just showing their ignorance. You can't be a champion if you think there is a reason to lose (there is none) otherwise don't play, don't waste our time or yours. My coach used to say you have to believe that even if its your mom out there you will crush her, and that was in high school!! What do you think the pros have as an attitude?

Duh

3. when the William sisters were dominating awhile back everyone hated them but now that they are the only American women in a sea of Russians they are loved. they are the reason womens tennis was put on prime time TV.

4. Hail, to the Queens of tennis! An American will win Wimbledon. These Black Divas have left their mark on tennis forever. When reasonably healthy and focused they are unbeatable. They are the greatest the world has ever seen. It's so wonderful to be a black American. May God bless them abundantly!

5. I'm looking forward to the William sister's battle it out on Saturday. I remember, when two beautiful young ladies were denounced when they began their journey into the sport of tennis. I cannot wait for the match to begin on Saturday. The William sister's are the Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Tony Dungy, LOvie Smith, of their time. God Bless the Williams sister's

6. It's a shame that they get special treatment. They should be in the same draw. But these two steriod munching women ( I use this loosely) seem to get extra help. yes they can play but they are some of the worst losers in the history of the game. Period!! They should do us all a favor and get the sex change and finally become men, so they are what they look like now.

Scott at 5:12AM on Jul 5th 2008

7. Scott, i can tell by your stupid remarks that you know nothing about a black woman's body, you cocksucking SOB. That comment about special treatment, is that the best you can come up with as to why these two beautiful women are dominating this sport? I suppose if they were blond haired and blue eyed with flat butts then everything would be ok. Don't hate these women for their hard work that paid off or their wonderful bodies......hate on the God that gave it to them, clown.

jchap at 10:33PM on Jul 6th 2008

8. You are an idiot! Why you cannot give these two women the respect that they derseve? They are among the best in tennis and it came down to the best of best in Wimeldon. I was disapointed in some of the players that were elimated but, I looked forward to the showdown of the Williams sister.

9. A handshake to JCHAP who knows how to put a redneck in his place!

10. Is it just me?....It seems the sports media doesn't know Venus won wimbledon a fifth time....I guess only Rafael won this weekend. I bet if Maria Sharipova won for a 5th time this weekend she would be front page of ESPN.com But thats ok you can't change the record books...congratulations Venus!!!

Mel T. at 9:14PM on Jul 8th 2008

11. It is so great to see these sister do so well. But i do not to see so much boobs.

kenny at 8:16AM on Jul 17th 2008

12. Yeah Scott's a moron. The Venus sisters are hot.

I agree about the news media not reporting. I had to come here to find out who won. Thanks...
