Kim Burrell: Details On A New CD, Her Conference & A George Clinton Duet

By Jawn Murray, BlackVoices.comKim Burrell

Kim Burrell is an artists' artist.

Known for her intricate vocal arrangements and her ability to do acrobatics with her voice, the Houston-bred gospel singer has become the vocalist that singers of various genres name as their favorite.

From Jessica Simpson to Chaka Khan, Justin Timberlake to Tyrese, and Harry Connick Jr. to Beyonce; Burrell's popularity among the mainstream is so significant that during a MTV special on the film 'The Fighting Temptations,' the network recognized her by showcasing countless artists reciting her name when asked who was their favorite singer.

The 35-year-old singer is humbled by the respect she's earned from her peers.

"I believe God has given it to me because he can trust me to make goStevie Wonder & Kim Burrell performing on the NAACP Image Awardsod of this gift. I'm truly honored and favored to have it. Very grateful," she said.

After the underground success of her independent album, 'Try Me Again' (1995), Burrell released two critically acclaimed albums for Tommy Boy – 'Everlasting Life' (1998) and 'Live in Concert' (2001).

Since then, she has also made numerous cameos on albums by Stevie Wonder, Missy Elliott, Hezekiah Walker, VaShawn Mitchell, R. Kelly, Shirley Caesar, Kirk Whalum, Ricky Dillard and numerous others.

Most recently, it was announced that the raspy-toned contralto would be featured on funk legend George Clinton's forthcoming album.

"Mr. Clinton asked several artists about me and low and behold, me and Tye Tribbett were working on his current album at the time in Houston and George Clinton walks in. He wanted to meet me. He then asked me to be on his album. I am so excited about that! Genuinely," she expressed.

While collaborative efforts have kept fans content during the seven years its been since Burrell released fresh material, followers constantly ask the singer: "When are you releasing a new CD?"

"I plan to record several albums in the coming year," she offered. "I will in fact begin that journey this year. Live at the Lincoln Center [in New York City] is my hope. We are scheduled for December 2008."

In the meantime, Burrell wants to use her knowledge of music and her passion for gospel ministry to enlighten others.

On July 30 – Aug 2, she will host her third 'Ephesians 4: This is my story...this is my sound' conference in Houston.

"The conference started from a revelation from God through his Word according to this chapter. When I read it God told me to do a clarion call to the beloved. Remind the world of ministry to remember not to forget the true essence of sensitive, God fearing ministry and how to execute it," she explained.

And while conferences seem to be the new fad in the gospel and Christian industry, Burrell believes that the sole purpose of hers makes it stand apart among the others.

"My direction and purpose for this conference is to deliberately challenge the accomplished (artists) to purposely and purposefully help to change the lives of the 'up and coming.' By doing so, we have set up one-on-one experiences with the elite in ministry as well as professionals in the business to bring clarity to unanswered questions for success," she shared, before adding: "Ultimately I want the participants to know that they have been empowered and equipped to better serve God and man."

Industry heavyweights like Richard Smallwood, Tye Tribbett, Darkchild producer Fred Jerkins, Donnie McClurkin, Jonathan Nelson, Byron Cage and others have signed on to facilitate sessions during 'Ephesians 4.'

Additionally, Burrell aims to take the conference on the road and expand its reach internationally as well.

"Starting in February of 2009, we will begin what we call 'Ephesians 4' regionals. We will go to Savannah, Ga. for our first regional experience. We will later travel to Amsterdam to share this experience as well," she said.

2. I remember a song Ms. Burrell sang entitled: Love Comes in All Colors. Can't remember who's project nor the artist that wrote it. It never made it to mainstream audiences because it was on a gospel cd, but the message is so prevalent and her voice delivered it like no one could. God Bless you, Ms. Kim.

5. Hey. I love Kim Burrell's music. No matter what her critics and haters may say or think about her, she is truly an anointed and appointed woman of God. Keep singing for the glory of God. And to the person who said she acted like a diva, the bible says, Touch not my anointed, and do my Prophets no harm. Be not deceived, God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Watch what you say, it may soon befall you.

6. I'm not a fan of Kim Berrell's singing. I admire her for what she has accomplished in the Godspell music world. I just don't care for her style of singing....My personal opinion...

7. OMG! Anybody who knows anything about music, knows that Kim Burrell is one of the best female vocalists that exists period point blank! Regardless of the genre, she's at the top of most of the "artist's favorites" list, just as the article says. From her vocal ability, even down to the timing and rhythm in which she sings her words, she has so many other artists copying her style. But nobody does it better or quite as accurate as she can. She is a gospel queen w/jazz style vocals & riffs that are immaculate. I must admit that Dorinda Clark was the 1st female vocalist I heard and enjoyed, who also had a raspy alto voice, sang jazzy and would scat in her songs, but Kim came along and took it to a whole nother level with her own style. I love Dorinda and all her sisters and KiKi. Cogic always produced the best in the industry. Mad love to Kim Burrell, she can do no wrong by my ears!

8. My prior comments weren't to knock anyone. If you're not a fan or can't get with her style, that's cool, to each his own. God gave everybody different styles and preferences, and each has their own favorites. Kim is so fierce, that you don't have to know anything about music to know she's at the top of her game, one of the best. Even if you can't get with her style, just know that it's very few females who can do what she does so effortlessly!

9. I first heard Kim Burrell sing at Perfecting Church in Detroit where Marvin L. Winans is Pastor in 1994. She was awesome then and she is awesome now. She is the perfect instrument.

10. If you think Kim is a great singer, then you should have been at the 2008 AIM convention in Detroit last week!! Sis. Kim preached the walls down!!
Your COGIC sister

11. YES YES Kim is a marvelous singer. Channe is right Kim brought forth the word at the AIM Convention in Detroit. I enjoyed her, it was a real blessing

BC at 6:10PM on Jul 7th 2008

12. Friends informed me of Kim's appearance at the AIM convention. They were so proud as am I--a long time friend of her mother and grandmother.

So, naturally I called Helen Ruth to let her know of this featured internet article. I was told that Kim will be viewing this site as soon as her mother calls her.

To KIM---God Bless You!!!

13. Ain't God Good! I throughly enjoy listening to "Ms.KIM" as she worships the Lord. Oh, ya'll thought she was singing and entertaining, but she's
magnifying and praising God from the depths of her
being! And look what happened! God got in the praise
and drew men to himself and unbelievable "blessings"
for "Ms. Kim". "Ms.Kim" keep on "Listening to God" -
you ain't seen nothing yet!
