Mos Def: In (And Out Of) Love With A Stripper

Posted Jul 1st 2008 10:10AM by Karu F. Daniels
Filed under: Entertainment Newswire

By Karu F. Daniels, BlackVoices.com

I've always wondered why Mos Def was so media shy.

The rootsy rapper, who seems to be an icon on the underground hip-hop circuit and a darling to Hollywood, oftentimes does not participate in media tours and junkets to promote his projects.

His estranged wife, on the other hand, is taking the opposite approach.

On April 23, BlackVoices.com's very own book blogger Felicia Pride reported the news that a tell-all memoir was underway.

Now it's out and in the explosive new book, 'Breaking the Code of Silence,' Alana Wyatt-Smith exposes a side of him that very few publicly knows.Their 2005 wedding took place three days after they met, the former stripper reveals, among other things.

According to 'The Toronto Star' newspaper, Wyatt-Smith accuses Mos Def (real name Dante Smith) of being too demanding, overprotective, and even physically abusive during their marriage.

Of that, she wrote: "I don't believe that his intent was to hurt me, I believe that he was trying to prove a point. But I had shared and cried with him many nights about my past (abusive) situation and I asked of him not to do that, because it brings back memories; so I found it to be more disrespectful, because he knew what I had been through."

The 29-year-old, junior high school drop-out also reveals her sexual encounters with various professional athletes and celebrities, including Kanye West.

But she says she's nobody's Superhead.

"I disagree with putting names of people in there, just out of respect for their wives and children," she told the newspaper. "If this was about making money, getting rich, I could have wrote a tell-all book, 10 times better than Karrine Steffans."

Ok.

The book also claims the couple tried several times to reconcile since breaking up in Oct. 2006; and that the two are technically still married.

"He won't sign the papers," she said "He told my lawyer if he can't have me, nobody else will."

A rep for Mos Def, 35, who reportedly has six kids with four different women, could not be reached for comment.

The Brooklyn-born rapper -- who starred in movies such as 'Monsters Ball,' 'Be Kind Rewind' and 'The Woodsman' -- headlined the final night of the 2008 JVC Jazz Festival over the weekend, which was his Carnegie Hall debut.

Black Music Notes June 26

    6/26/08: Jill Scott
Jill Scott's latest album 'The Real Thing' is coming to a television screen near you. And it's going to be a sight for your eyes and a pleasure to your ears. On June 29, TV One will premiere an original music concert special featuring the neo-soul high priestess in all of her glory. Titled 'Jill Scott: The Real Thing Tour (Live in Philly),' the one-hour special features the two-time Grammy Award winning wunderkind performing a mix of her classic hits such as 'A Long Walk' and 'The Way,' juxtaposed with material from her newer projects, including the inspirational anthem 'Golden' and the tell-it-like-it-is, take-no-prisoners 'Hate On Me.' The special (Scott's very first) was filmed in March 2008 at the Liacouris Center in Philadelphia. Encore airings of the show are scheduled to air on July 3, July 5, and July 11.

    6/26/08: D'Angelo
Despite going through legal woes over the past few years, neo-soul originator D'Angelo is back in the studio working on a new album. According to 'Billboard,' the singer is expected to release his new as-yet-untitled album next year on J Records. The company bought out his contract in 2005 from Virgin Records (who released his first two albums). Fans can expect the man legally known as Michael D'Angelo Archer to hook up with Raphael Saadiq once again, the two previously worked together on Saadiq's 2002 hit 'Be Here.' Although the album is still in its early stages, the 'Brown Sugar' crooner has plans to also land John Mayer on the opus, with a single to hit the airwaves by the end of the year. Until that time comes, fans can catch some of D'Angelo in his former glory with the recently released compilation, 'The Best So Far,' featuring hits, rarities and previously unreleased videos.

    6/26/08: Gerald Albright
This week, one of the most sought after saxophonists in contemporary jazz, Gerald Albright, will release his eleventh solo project titled, 'Sax for Stax.' The set features eight covers from the Stax Records catalog , in addition to three originals written by Albright. The multi-talented sax player reached out to vocalists Will Downing, Ledisi, and Philip Bailey to help recapture classic music such as Issac Hayes' top five hit 'Never Can Say Goodbye' and the Staple Singers' hit 'Respect Yourself.' "I went through two box sets with over 20 CDs to pick songs that felt good and would work well melodically for the saxophone," Albright said.

    6/26/08: Swizz Beatz
Just last year super-producer Swizz Beatz was hospitalized for exhaustion, and by the looks of it hasn't slowed him down a bit. The hip-hop hit-maker has been in the studio crafting hits for Jay-Z, G-Unit, Ludacris, T.I. , Alicia Keys, and surprisingly the icon himself Michael Jackson. The Bronx native (legally known as Kasseem Dean) recently revealed his plans to not only produce some music for the King of Pop, but produce his tour as well. "I'm probably gonna be producing his tour and everything," he explained to 'MTV.' "I'm designing planes for Gulf Stream and everything. They called me. I'm around different people. I'm around billionaires. I'm around people like that." This October Swizz Beatz plans to release his new studio opus entitled, 'Life After the Party.'

    6/26/08: Erykah Badu
This fall, Erykah Badu is planning on bringing some of her voodoo experiences on the road the neo-soul diva was recently added to the tenth annual "Voodoo Experience Festival," held October 24-26 in New Orleans. In addition to Badu, Wyclef Jean, Joss Stone, and Lupe Fiasco are among the other acts on board to join alternative rock headliners R.E.M. , Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots. Tickets are priced at $115, while a three-day VIP pass will available for a whopping $450.

    6/26/08: Ludacris
Trying to maintain a successful career in the music industry as well as Hollywood can be a bit strenuous for some rappers. But not Ludacris! Luda (as he is also known as) not only has his new album, 'Theater of the Mind' slated to hit stores in September, he's also in the process of filming a few movies. On Halloween, the actor/rapper will be appearing in Guy Ritchie's new film 'RocknRolla.' He also recently finished shooting 'Max Payne,' a crime thriller fronted by Mark Wahlberg. When asked which profession he likes most, he simply replied: "Music is still my number-one love. I just balance a lot of different things now." Hollywood is still calling him, though. To date, Ludacris has starred in the Academy Award winning movie 'Crash,' the John Singleton-produced 'Hustle & Flow' and 'Fred Clause,' alongside Vince Vaughan.

    6/26/08: Ne-Yo/Keyshia Cole
The 2008 Reggae Sumfest is guaranteed to kick off with a bang! On July 18, new-school R&B superstars Ne-Yo and Keyshia Cole are tapped to headline this year's international night at the Montego Bay festival, which takes place from July 13-19. Reggae Sumfest will also showcase the best of the best in Dancehall and Reggae music including Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, and Lady Saw, among many others.

    6/26/08: Will.I.Am
Crafting hit music for The Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake can only inspire an artist/producer such as Will.I.Am (born William James Adams Jr.)to go beyond the music industry. Fans can expect to see the Black Eyed Peas front-man in the forthcoming X-Men movie, 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine,' playing a role opposite of Hugh Jackman. Will.I.Am recently revealed to 'MTV News' that the character he'll be playing is a teleporter by the name of John Wraith. In addition to 'X-Men,' the producer also landed a role in the 'Madagascar' sequel. "With 'Madagascar 2,' I think there has to be an angel or something or my grandma's prayers guiding that," he says. "It's pretty, pretty dope. And I'm grateful and happy about it all." 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' is expected to hit theaters in May 2009.

    Wire Image

    6/26/08: Mashonda
After releasing her debut album 'January Joy' internationally, Mashonda returns with two new singles 'All or Nothing' and 'No Panties' from her forthcoming untitled album. The Harlem reared singer describes her first single 'No Panties' as being "all about giving your man whatever he desires; no limits." In addition to her new music hitting the radio airwaves, the ex Mrs. Swizz Beatz (real name: Mashonda Tifrere-Dean) is the creative director and model for an upcoming coffee table book entitled, 'Alter Ego Revealed.' Mashonda's new album is set to drop in early next year.

    6/26/08: Lauryn Hill/Kanye West
'Entertainment Weekly' magazine recently unveiled its 'New Classics' list in which they ranked the best in music, movies, TV shows, and books from over the past 25 years. Lauryn Hill's mega-selling solo debut 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' landed at number two slot behind Prince's timeless classic 'Purple Rain,' which held down the top spot. Other artist that made the list included Kanye West (No. 4), Jay-Z (No. 7), Outkast (No. 12), Beyonce (No. 19), Mariah Carey (No. 21), Nas (No. 28), and The Notorious B.I.G (No. 40), among many others.

1. Sign the divorce papers and then look me up, your cute.

Tanya at 1:24PM on Jul 1st 2008

2. MOS SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE, AND HIS WIFE SHOULD KEEP HER MOUTH SHUT WHAT IS THE POINT OF TRYING TO OUT THE MAN NOW, CELEB OR NOT EVERYONE GOES THROUGH THEIR PROBLEM AND I GUESS IT WAS NOT A PROBLEM WHEN SHE WAS GETTING ALL THE BENEFITS.

LORRAINE at 3:34PM on Jul 1st 2008

3. If they are technically still married, why don't she shut-up and wait till they get a divorce?

Caretta at 4:13PM on Jul 1st 2008

4. Not to be mean but she deserves everything that is happening to her if it's true because she married that man for money not because of love cause she didn't know him from a bucket of apples she married him after 3 days she's a jackass so I don't feel sorry for her, she stuck around for the so called abuse so obviously it couldn't have been that bad it ain't like she stayed because of kids because they don't have any, anyways the trick need to move on.

Latonya at 9:28PM on Jul 1st 2008

5. First of all if the chick only has a junior high education she ain't write nothing somebody wrote it for her and best believe this book was not her idea, but on the other hand that's what his a** get. Its hard to believe that a man who presents himself as being so conscious could be so stupid for lack of a better word. You don't marry no one after knowing for the 3 days the fact that she was a stripper well, if he was able to deal with then more power to him, because I don't know no real man that would actually marry a stripper. Its a fact you cannot turn a ho, with no education or goals, into a housewife.

6. MOS DEF got 6 kids the groupies of the world are in full effect this skank dropped out of school in jr high where the hell were her parents !!! this world is in it's last days

lexdiamonz at 9:15AM on Jul 2nd 2008

7. While you all are putting down this woman, remember to include Mos Def's dumb ass in the equation, for marrying her...but oh yeah, my bad, he gets a pass on being stupid...because he has a penis...and we all know when a man's penis is hard, he loses all sense of right and wrong, and is as helpless as a kitten stuck in a tree. Unbelievable, how men are never held accountable for their own stupidity.

Avril at 10:31AM on Jul 2nd 2008

8. A really women no that a man is like a ribbit he hop from hold to hold.

Kauket Ka Mere at 2:07PM on Jul 2nd 2008

9. I think he's a man just like every other man. He fell for a pretty face and wasnt thinking about anything else. I happen to be in love with Mos Def and i really cant see him as being a bad person. These days it's too hard to tell what a person will do though. I hope it was worth it i wouldnt buy the book. I just wanna know she must of been really pretty. Either that or he's just a trick like most of the rappers. I still love him though. No changing my mind about him any time soon

Tishawn at 8:24PM on Jul 2nd 2008

10. I am disappointed in Mos Def for marrying that hoe after 3 days. I would think he would know better but like someone said earlier, when a man's penis is hard he ain't got common sense. And as for the hoe, why the hell would you tell a man you used to get yo ass whupped on?? And why she had to go and say she could write a book better than superhead, aint nobody even heard of her stripping ass.

Steph at 9:10PM on Jul 2nd 2008

11. Will someone give these a h*es a book to read instead of a book deal to write? It is a travesty to the children and families of these females and these whorish men to be glorified in books magazines, on the web and otherwise for their private sexual lives. Who cares?! It sickens me to my stomach especially when I see the state of our community. I'm sorry but here in Detroit, we still laugh at strippers, and if you are a guy dating one you will get clowned. It's just not cute. Are strippers and video hoes human? Sure, and there are some that are classy about it. There are women that appear onstage and in videos that carry themselves very well, and thus are treated with respect. Then you have these young, stupid, uneducated, money hongry (yes HONGRY)I however beautiful on the outside women, that are putting not only their lives in the circus, but the lives of their families and children as well.
On the flipside, the men are just as whorish as the women, and it is this type of glorified behavior that has put the global black community in peril. AIDS is real believe that. Folks out here Where are the parents and teachers? The real black folks are too busy being ummm black and the n*ggas have taken over.... each one, teach one...

Hateur at 1:03PM on Jul 3rd 2008

12. I agree that she should stop trying to get rich at the expense of her husband. He tried to save you and it didn't work. If he was abusive what will it accomplish by writing a book? Mrs.Smith should seek professional help to solve her issues. Ain't nobody gone but your lil book. I Love Mos Def. Find another come up

kirry at 1:14PM on Jul 3rd 2008

13. you know what they say, you can't turn a hoe into a housewife...sorry mos def, you should have seen that coming.

Felicia at 1:31PM on Jul 3rd 2008

14. i can't believe some people..

smg at 4:02PM on Jul 3rd 2008

15. He is straight up a dog, if not a loser none of you know him. Just because he's famous does mean he isn't. He chose to marry her after 3 days. Furthermore, when you are with someone you trust you share various things about your life your like's and dislikes and more. She didn't want him to abuse her which tells me he is an abuser; rather its physical or emotionally its abuse and its wrong.

Because she dropped out of HS does not mean she's dumb not that I no her.
However, she is smart enough to make more money than any of you who date and never been marry yourself but you give your precious bodies away for free.

I like Mos Def he appears to be intelligent and quiet now we all no "nothing is as it appears."
Furthermore, half the woman on here said ugly things about this woman but its ok, if Mos Def is a complete a**hole..

My question to you "is he weaker than you guys want to admit?", "He won't sign the papers," she said "He told my lawyer if he can't have me, nobody else will."

She must be more than pretty she is a stripper, perhaps she has a body to go with the looks and smart enough to get guys with $$$$$$.
Any way this adds no value to my life, I'm only sharing my thinks like everyone else.
