Jay Z gets mistaken for... Joe Budden?

Posted Jun 26th 2008 7:32PM by Denver Louis
Filed under: BlackSpin

In a segment on the 'Today Show' this week concerning the omnipresence of Barack Obama, an odd thing happened.

When the show got to talking about Obama's musical influences, as written about in the new RollingStone, they showed Stevie Wonder and then Jay-Z.

Wait. That's not Jay-Z! The picture was in fact New Jersey rapper, Joe Budden ...

Now maybe it's just me, but Budden doesn't look like Jay-Z.

Is it so much to ask for a little more attention to detail? This little faux pas of course was overlooked because a large percentage of the 'Today Show' audience probably wouldn't be able to identify either of them, but the point still remains.

Maybe it was a simple mistake, but it just goes to show how important it is to check the facts, and then check them again. ... And then check them one more time. After all, Jay-Z is as mainstream and recognizable as they come and Joe Budden ... exactly.

Check out the mix-up around the 1:18 mark of the video

1. NBC is like all the other worthless network, they are all color blind.

BETTYEJ at 8:51PM on Jun 26th 2008

2. Not only does NBC has trouble identifying Black People but has trouble RECOGNIZING Black People period! The only time you see a black person is maybe on a segment with or without AL, once or twice a week. Most of the time, with AL somebody black is cooking something? Nothing wrong with that but how come none of the others do it? I noticed that. How about, they always have Beyonce, Jay Z, Rhiana, Mary J, or people that are crossovers to the pop cultures are on? Why is that? When it was Black History month, did you think that they would do a nice informative segment?

The Today Show could have had a segment on Black History Month everyday until the END of the month. Why couldn't the show do that? If the show did, there was probably just ONE SEGMENT out of the whole month! I'm telli'n you! That show ain't right!

I noticed when Hillary was running against Obama, Matt Meridith was happy to ask question to her. You could see it in their faces and the tone in their voice that they didn't care to much for Obama when they asked him? I don't really watch it anymore because, the show doesn't really RECOGNIZE BLACK PEOPLE!

3. He is quite a guy!!! He was said to have a personal account on a Luxury online service RICHLOVING.COM for successful and celebs singles with his hot pictures and blog there. Quite a few hot girls and ladies wrote to him. I've been there for day, it seems the girls are not hard to hook up.

5. White America don't know us and never will because its in their blood.I'm so tired of them trying to be like us,its out of control yo.

Q at 7:53PM on Jun 28th 2008

6. Ok, here we go......turning this into a racial issue. I'm convinced that black people (and I am) who read racism into everything have really LOW self esteem. It was probably an honest mistake. Damn!

I don't come to Black Voices often, but if this is the type of crap you all like to perpetuate, I won't be back. We have a lot to be proud of right now with Barack Obama, and most of us are ready to change and move forward. This article keeps us in the past, and that's really sad.

7. I'm sooooo glad somebody said it BellaY thanks so much because I was like oh my GOD this country has really got some people buggin! using race as a crutch is mind boggling!!

8. This does not surprise me. What needs to be discussed and researched is the employment issue. It is apparent that NBC does not have any concious African Americans is positions working behind the scene of the Today Show? Inclusion is extremely important. The question is why does the media continue to not hire qualified people of color who could contribute to producing these stories. Remember the OJ trail? Newsweek put a picture of OJ on the cover and they intentionally darkened his skin to create controversy and hate. If a concious person of color was working in a position of authority they could have said, "wait a minute," this is not a true photo of OJ Simpson! That photo cause more problems with the issue of racism and diverted the case of a criminal act. Those of you that say, "stop talking about racism" don't understand that if we did not speak on it we would not have the rights we have thus far. murder.

10. Bellay - This about this for a moment - Tim Russert just passed from heart failure - The man was a Giant in the news industry - He gain respect from everyone and I mean everyone because not only did he do his homework on the subject/person, but he checked it again, again, again, and again before he would report it to the people on "Meet The Press". So Do I consider this a mistake, maybe - But the fact reminds, NBC was not on it's game and never has been! We need a solid Black Network for our people - And please do not insult me with BET - They sold out even before Bob Johnson sold the business. Women have the Lifetime Network, our Latino brother and sister's have their network - It's way passed time that we have our own. Ooops, I forgot, Bill Cosby tried to purchase NBC before - I guess he was too black.

Buck at 9:34AM on Jun 29th 2008

14. I do not wish to think this is a racial issue. The problem is that the network did not do its homework. One of the things that the late, great Tim Russert was known for was his attention to detail and his determination to make sure that statements were grounded in fact, not conjecture. Someone was not doing his/her job when they allowed the wrong person's picture to be displayed. It is understandable that hip hop artists may not be familiar to "mainstream" television, but even my 85 year old mother knows that isn't Jay-Z. If they are that sloppy in presenting information to the public, it makes me wonder what other misinformation they are spreading.

Paige at 10:45AM on Jun 29th 2008

15. When was the last time there was a mix-up of Angelina Jolie and some lesser know white chic? (Sorry JB) Everybody knows Jay-Z!!! Could have just put a picture of Eddie Murphy, then!! It is insulting!!!
