Style Spotted: Bold & Bright Ruled BET Awards

Posted Jun 25th 2008 9:57AM by Sonya Magett

Rihanna was lovely in lemon yellow

The 2008 BET Awards was held at the shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles last night and the house was packed with a bevy of celebrity beauties wearing bold, bright hues.

Yellow was the most popular and Rihanna led the brigade with a tiered, ruffled maxidress. Lemon hits were also worn by Keyshia Cole, Trina, Jill Scott for the Al Green tribute she performed in, Lauren London, former Miss USA Kenya Moore, one half of Mary Mary and even BET President Debra Lee.

Alicia Keys looked fab in fitted, pleated pink as did Cassie in her neon mini-version. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks was fire in fitted red, comedian Niecy Nash and Chrisette Michelle both popped in purple and Queen Latifah was regal in royal blue.

Actress Gabrielle Union led the great white hype trend, she was a goddess in her white column dress. Chris Brown was adorable in a white motorcycle jacket and Diddy brought mad swagger as usual to his white suit with black lapels and tie.

Producer Jazze Pha and Cee-Lo also wore white suits; Keyshia Cole didn't disappoint in an all white tank top, hotpants and thigh-hi boots for her performance. White shoes were also popular: Ne-Yo performed in a pair for his Michael-Jackson-inspired set as did Maxwell. BET host Toccara stayed safe in black with a lovely but ill-fitted dress, Ashanti's frock seemed a bit prom and Ciara was the best of the black wearing bunch with her elbow-length leather gloves, leather vest and thigh-hi platform boots. It was as sexy as her performance with Chris Brown that raised even girlfriend Rihanna's eyebrows.

Gunmetal was done right in the sharkskin variety by actor Derek Luke who accented it with a purple shirt, 106 & Park's Terence was sexy with it; both Anthony Hamilton and Lil' Kim performed in metallic pants.

As for the miss, er mess of the night: Lil' Mama in her Lil' BO Peep get-up made her the certifiable red carpet mess-of-the-moment. All she needed was a bonnet and staff to complete the look. She had the nerve to bring a mini-me version of herself with a little girl dressed identical. Poor thing!

Flavor of Love star Bucky should have stayed home in her black & white print dress. I wasn't mad at Lil' Kim's outfit, the fit and color of her dress was quite nice as well as the Louis Vuitton clutch and shoes, but the lace front wig and its color ruined the look. Keyshia Cole's yellow dress was fashion-forward but the fit threw the whole thing off. And did you see her mother and sister during the pre-show? M-to the E to the S to the freakin S! Hated it.

Cassie

Gabrielle Union

Niecy Nash

Chris Brown and Scooter

Overall the red carpet had more misses than hits but it's still fun to watch and comment. What were your favorite hits and misses? Please let us know.

1. There were a few of the women on BET that wore their dresses or gown's well. Some of the fellas, were looking dapper! Riahna looked like "Tweety Bird" with that canary-yellow looking dress. The end of the show, she should have worn something "COLORFUL"? I wasn't feelin the GOTH LOOK and her VOICE! Gabrielle Union, Queen Latifah, and Alicia were the only three that I thought dressed "ELEQUENT"! I got so sick and tired of seeing T-Pain with his stupid "Tom Petty" hat on all through the show! All through the awards, there it was! There should have been a dress code for Rick Ross. He's a big boy and it wasn't appropriate to just come out without no SHIRT! I had to turn my head! Not all rappers can go shirtless!

Lauren London's dress needed SUPPORT! The dress was a hot MESS! I didn't like keysha's and mom and nem's dress! GHETTO! When Keysha broke out into the shorts and heels, boy I thought she was going to fall into the crowd. She was PITCHY and it was a MESS! Lil Kim's outfit, not much to say when she was on stage except she has been doing crunches to get her figure back? Lil Kim over done it too!
Neicy Nash looked nice and Jennifer Hudson's dress was Ok? I don't know what Cassie was thinking when she wore that awful NOTHING-TO-IT dress! Ashanti, "WHY"? She OVER DID IT! I didn't like her dress or her hair style! Every year, Debra always has her chest out. NOT CLASSY! The fellas, like Chris brown, Maxwell, Anthony Hamilton, Al greene, and few others were looking dapper!

To me, BET has went DOWNHILL! I was not pleased with the appearances except with the Al Greene Tribute and that was ALL! I love Chris Brown but he was to RAUNCHY, it was like all in your face and that Ciara didn't help it either! INAPROPRIATE! All you could hear from the show was a lot of BEEPS! The performances was OVER THE TOP! Not feelin BET AWARDS OR BET ANYMORE!

4. omg i loved the bet awards i thought it was one of the best ones ince beyonce opened i believ two years ago?...but i really enjoyed the whole show. i thought alicia keys peformance was just beautiful and neyo was good to. Young jeezy and kanye that was soo tough and the crowd loved it. i mean its like the hoods natonal anthem and people sung to it like they could feel where he was coming from. Usher did a good job openin the show although all that gridin was kind of to much but he was good. I am happy about chris browns peformance because like he said.. its hard to do what you normally do when like 3 other people are going to do the same thing so he kept it classy with.. with you.. he didnt do all the dancing as usual because we had seen enough of that from usher and neyo. Chris and ciara could have demolished that stage if they wanted to but i feel like they held backa little on the dancing. I looooooooooved rihannas peformance she looked beautiful she sung with attitude and chris brown loved it just as much as i did. Lil wayne killed it at the end with a millie i mean thats my song and when he peformed it he did it from the heart. Algreen was just speechless i mean he was gettin down and so was the crowd it was such an incredible scene. Maxwell looked gorgeous and tlc made me cry. I mean bet awards was all that and some this year like they killed mtv awards by far

5. I loved both of Rhianna's dresses...I keep telling everyone that we have the same sense of style...I think my came first though. Ashanti looked a mess and could barely walk. Alicia looked a mess with her outfit and wig while performing...(the Smokin' Aces wig looked better) She looked like she was not prepared; was she waiting her on her dress, hair, and makeup to arrive?

BET Awards was better than last year, but they are definitely not on point.

7. I refuse to watch the BET awards because as a proud black man it is more than embarrassing to see these semi-talented people with their tacky "music" and their ghetto ways splashed all over the tv.Class and style are out the window when it comes to award shows featuring these young idiots today. You can take the clowns out of the ghetto but you cannot take the ghetto out of the clowns, its sickening and disgraceful.

8. The BET Award show was a hot mess. The whole thing made me sick. What in the (H) is wrong with Usher his performance was sorry, Infact his CD is Sorry. Rihanna can not sing she is just pretty. She needs to stick to modeling. Chris B. nasty. Keysha's needs to work on performing live she sux big time. Ne-yo was great, Marvin Sapp wonderful, Al Green great. But on the real the need to stop having that award show it make black people look stupid. Some of us do have class.

baby girl at 9:19AM on Jun 26th 2008

9. I definitely have to agree that the BET Award show is going downhill. I like some of the performances such as Alicia Keys (didn’t care for her attire, her backup sings were dress better than she was), Neo and Al Greene. The only male performer that was dress as if he was at an awards show was Neo. I don't understand black people. When white people have an award show they all come out dressed very classy but when black people come out they just have to always look GHETTO. It is so embarrassing. I like Ashanti but I felt that her dress was sooooooo inappropriate for the occasion. Even Keisha Cole started out very well until she rip her dress off and went right back to her ghetto ways. It’s really embarrassing and the worst part is that we think we are doing it right but we are not. I’m sure white people look at us and laugh because of how ridiculous we all look and sound.

yanni at 10:09AM on Jun 26th 2008

10. i too was quiet dissapointed with the awards. i mean i'm 15 and i was really excited to see the show. but i wished i hadn't. i think they over did everything. i mean, when there was just ONE surprise performerance, it was great. but when it was one after another, they killed the essence of it all. another thing... the outfits. personally i liked the t-pain get-up. only because i like him being DIFFERENT. it fits his anti-conformity towards being urnan, a hip-hop artist etc. keyshia cole shouldnt have ripped her dress, sorry i love her songs but i think she needs a cough drop. everyone else i thought were decent in some way. ne-yo looked very sexy and surprised me. lets see. the high point for me was when Quincy Jones aka Q got the humanitarian award. i think it made me open my eyes more to this world that we live in. i respect the man and i think people like him are needed to better this world. but yea, thats my two cents i guess
much love

Isabella A. at 11:54AM on Jun 26th 2008

11. To me it seems like the BET awards is just a show for a bunch of ghetto people to make fools of themselves. What happen to the "class" and the positive representaiton of "Black People". I guess that doesn't matter anymore. Doesn't anyone dance anymore rather than bump & grind. I won't be watching anymore.

tamira at 12:48PM on Jun 26th 2008

12. I thought the BET Awards wat nice but some of it I didn't like, like keyshia cole she did bad she barley sang all she did was dance and jump around, rhianna she did ok i didn't like her outfit it was ugly, I liked t-pain permfromace but what we he doing when he was walking all slow? chris brown did ok he did the same thing keyshia cole did barely sing and a whole lot of dancing i loved alicia keys performance with swv, envough, and tlc, ashanti outfit was ugly and i didn't like the hairstyle either i loved the al green performace and the tribute to qiuncy jones i thought that was off the hook i didn't like rick ross coming out on stage with no shirt on what was he thinking? i really liked ne-yo performance him and alicia keys wats the only one's that had some class. o yea usher did good but he should had have young jezzy perform with him.

flyysista2005 at 12:52PM on Jun 26th 2008

13. I agree with most of the comments. Here are my top 10

1. Usher - That was the worst performance that I have seen him give. Very weak.
2. Keshia Cole - What happen to her voice?
3. Lil Kim - She has been working out or under the knife
4. Keshia' mama - You just can't take her out in public and expect that she
would act like a lady. Dropping it like it's hot in a formal gown. And she was
all over those boys (old enough to be their mama)
5. The sound check people need to be sued. Mics fading in and out. UGH!
6. Maxwell - He looked and sounded great. Now get back in the studio and make
some baby making music.
7. Chris Brown - They did not give him enough time to perform. That sucks! Love
him and Cierra's performance.
8. NeYo - He should have been the opening act. Great performance!
9. Nicey Nash - I am going to run out and get me some whit kids to help my
credit score. LOL!
10. Alicia Keyes - She bought out the old school ladies. Why did T-boz look
upset?

PS K. West is getting my my last nerve! Who died and left him king! Such a self
centered jerk!

Pamico at 1:06PM on Jun 26th 2008
